Her funeral was 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at Harmony Baptist Church near Soperton. Mrs. Gillis, a native of Treutlen County, was a resident of Emanuel County for 53 years. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and the Faith Sunday School Class. She was a former member of Harmony Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Charles Gillis of Shellman Bluff, Franklin Gillis of Swainsboro and Lamon Gillis of Millen; a daughter, Joyce Williams of Swainsboro; a sister, Billie K. Hood of Kite; a brother, Colon Kitchens of Vidalia; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Her funeral was 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, at Millen United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Millen Cemetery. Mrs. Clifton was a native of Bulloch County. She lived in Jenkins County for the past 60 years. She was retired from Jockey International, Inc. She was a member of Millen United Methodist Church and was one of the last surviving members of the Good Neighbor Club. Survivors include her widower, Paul Clifton of Millen; a son, Gary Clifton of Millen; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Clifton Eason and C. Mrs. Bargeron, a native of Screven County, was an active member of Millen United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Epworth Sunday School Class, Golden Oldies and the Joy Circle. She was a charter member of Fairhaven United Methodist Women. She was also a charter member of the Good Neighbor Club where she served as past president and secretary. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Mell and Bettye W. Bargeron of Twin City; a daughter, Gloria Bargeron of Millen; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Virginia Waters of Deland, Fla.; a brother-in-law, J. B. A memorial service was held 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at Crowe- Fields Funeral Home. His funeral was 2 p.m. at Elmore, McCreight, Hill Funeral Home in Sumter, S.C. Burial was in the Sumter Cemetery. Mr. Way, a native of Sumter, was a veteran of World War II. He retired from E.I. DuPont as a senior design engineer. Survivors include his widow, Grace T. Way of Perkins; children, Deborah Desai of Atlanta, Mark Way of Orlando, Fla., Jerri Alsobrooks of Pinewood, S.C., Michalyn Gardner of Spartanburg, S.C. and Dawn Stanley of Sumter; three brothers, John Way and Jerry Way, both of Lugoff, S.C. and Billy Way of Perkins; two sisters, Netta Kennedy of Holly Hill, S.C. and Barbara Jean Robertson of Nicholsville, Ky.; and 11 grandchildren. --The Millen News, February 5, 2003 William Colbert Hawkins, 88, of Sylvania died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003 at Gentilly Gardens in Statesboro. His funeral was held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at the Sylvania First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lonnie Norris officiating. Burial with military honors accorded was in the Sylvania City Cemetery. Judge Hawkins, a native of Walton County, was a retired Superior Court Judge of the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1932. He graduated from the University of Georgia (UGA) with a bachelor of arts degree in 1937 and a doctor of jurisprudence degree in 1939. At UGA he served as president of the Gridiron Club, Omicron Delta Kappa and Demostherian Literary Society. He was a member of Sphinx, Blue Key, Scabbard and Blade, Calvary and R.O.T.C. He was a cadet captain and a campus leader. He served as a major in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a colonel, JAGC, USAR Reserve, retiring in 1974. He was a graduate of Command and General Staff College. He graduated from the advanced course at Judge Advocate General's School. He was assigned as Reserve Military Judge, Army Trial Judiciary, 1964-1974. He practiced law in Sylvania from 1939-1969, except for military service in World War II. Gov. Lester Maddox appointed him Judge of Superior Court in 1969. He retired to the position of Senior Superior Court Judge in 1984. He was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1951- 1952 and 1955-1958. He served as a member of the State Programs Study Committee in 1955 and the State Democratic Executive Committee, 1955-1958. He was the House of Representatives Floor Leader in 1957-1958. He was a Mason, a Shriner and a democrat. He was a member of the Sylvania Rotary Club and Sylvania First Baptist Church. Survivors include his widow, Katrine Rawls Hawkins, M.D. of Sylvania; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy H. and Jess Stokes of Oliver; a son, William "Bill" C. Hawkins Jr. of Sylvania; a brother, Gen. Glen Hawkins of Monroe; and two grandsons, Stephen Stokes and Will Stokes, both of Oliver. Pallbearers were Dr. C. Edward Hagan, James Snow, Ed Reddick, Grady Reddick, Sheriff Mike Kile, Billy Howard and Duane Bohr. Memorials may be sent to United Way of Screven County, P.O. His funeral will be 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, Feb. 12), at Elam Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill Brown and Maurice Crowder officiating. Burial will be in the Elam Cemetery. Mr. Clifton, a native of Jenkins County, was a retired farmer and agri-business dealer. He was a member of Elam Baptist Church where he was in the Men's Bible Class, Brotherhood and the Merry Makers. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara C. and Lewis Gay of Millen; two sons and daughters-in-law, John Roy Jr. and Patricia Clifton and Dudley and Kathy Clifton, all of Millen; four sisters, Helen C. Roach and Elene C. Bragg, both of Millen, Adelia C. Gay of Beaufort, S.C. and Joyce C. Oglesby of Garfield; a brother, Paul Clifton of Millen; four grandchildren; Andy Clifton, John Clifton, Will Gay Jr. and Patti Hendley; and four great-grandchildren, Will Gay III, Emily Gay, Josh Hendley and Ann Marie Hendley. Active pallbearers will be Will Gay, Andy Clifton, John Clifton, Wesley Hendley, Gary Clifton, Lindsey Gay, Larry Gay, Jimmy Gay and J.D. Oglesby. Her funeral was 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, at the Millen Church of God. Burial was in the Millen Cemetery. Mrs. Vickery, a native of Chatham County, was a homemaker. She attended the Millen Church of God. Survivors include six daughters, Willie Crews, Barbara Holland and Catherine Switzer, all of Savannah, Juanita Callaway of Ocala, Fla., Charlene Hartzell of Tiffin, Ohio and Sylvia Saunders of Jacksonville, Fla.; four sons, Eddie Williams and Britt Vickery Jr., both of Jacksonville, Joe Williams of Alpharetta and William Vickery of Millen; a brother, Paul Meeker of Asheville, N.C.; 37 grandchildren; and a great grandchild.
