Born the eighth child in a family of 10 during the depression, Dicie learned early the skills of getting along well with others. Always willing to do more than her share, her natural caring and love for her fellow man has resulted in a life lived with both graciousness and generosity. At a time when young women were not encouraged in academics, Dicie excelled in school. Her inquisitive nature led her to become a life-long learner. She instilled this love of learning, as well as the belief that in order to be interesting, you must first be interested, in her children. As a grown, married woman, Dicie served her country during World War II by working on military airplanes and weaponry. Following the war, she started her family and dedicated her time to rearing her daughters. The untimely death of her husband, J.J. Boyd, presented new challenges for the young widow and mother of three children under the age of 12. Unprepared for the role as sole provider for her family, Dicie rose to the occasion by going to work, in first the textile industry and then the insurance industry for Mutual of Omaha and then Nationwide. When few women worked outside the home, Dicie was advancing, ultimately leaving the security of a paid position in the textile industry to take the daring step into the unforgiving, commission-driven, male-dominated world of the self-employed insurance agent. In her many years in the insurance industry, Dicie was revered by her peers, consistently a top producer and received many national achievement awards. During the years of work and accomplishment outside the home, Dicie succeeded, no less, in providing a stable, loving environment for her children. Her love of God set the edifying tone for their upbringing. Against great odds, Dicie encouraged and provided for her daughters' college educations and ultimately facilitated the dental degrees of two of her sons-in-law. Her family credits her as having been both the impetus and catalyst for it's success. Dicie credited God. Few would question the special relationship Dicie enjoyed with her Savior. She is matriarch of a proud, loving and appreciative family, which spans four generations - rich in every sense of the word. Never a person to wait for someone else to "do the right thing", Dicie lived an example of Jesus' admonition "to love one another". She had an uncanny ability to know when help is needed and always ready to offer assistance, whether it is family, friend or mere acquaintance. She had many talents such as sewing, cooking and gardening. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, at Ellis Chapel Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Gary Stough, Donna and Bob West and Rhonda and Ron Wilson; grandchildren, five grandchildren, Alria Stough Chilcutt and Nathan Chilcutt, Jolee West Hibbard and Brad Hibbard, Bobby and Vicki West and Boyd and Laurel Stough; two brothers, Ben Lane and Emory Lane; a sister, Ruth Mons; and five great- grandchildren. -- The Millen News January 26, 2005 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/jenkins/obits/l/gob2230lykins.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 4.0 Kb
