Hugh Matthew Newton, 80, of Millen died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004 at the 
Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta.

Graveside services were held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, at the Elam Cemetery 
with Dr. Maurice Crowder and the Rev. Jerry Hood officiating.

Mr. Newton was an Alzheimer's patient at the Georgia War Veterans Home at the 
time of his death. He served his country as an intelligence specialist in the 
13th Air Force in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a graduate 
of Gordon Military College, Georgia Southern University and the University of 
Georgia. He spent most of his career in the field of education.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; their three sons and daughters-in-law, 
Hugh Matthew Newton Jr. and Penny of Richmond Hill, Michael Rodney Newton and 
Linda of Jefferson and Stephen Martin Newton and Patsy of Dunwoody; six 
grandchildren, Matthew, Michael and Mark Newton and Skyler, Samantha and 
Jordon Newton; and two brothers, Bob Newton of Maxeys and Gary Newton of 
Athens.
