Womack was elected sheriff of Jenkins County in 1985 and served in that capacity until earlier this year when he resigned, citing bad health. During his tenure as sheriff the present jail on Masonic Street was erected and later renovated, and the Jenkins County Sheriff's Department became the first law enforcement agency in the county to secure and use a camera in a law enforcement vehicle. Under his leadership, the sheriff's department was also an active participant with the East Central Georgia Drug Task Force, assisting with numerous investigations and arrests. Sheriff Womack utilized grant funds to secure the purchase of three radars for department vehicles and secured funds to equip all department vehicles with new radios prior to his leaving office. He was a native of Bulloch County, a member of the George Peace Officers Association and the Georgia Sheriff's Association, owner of Womack Timber and Wood Company and a member of Elam Baptist Church. He is survived by his widow, Helen Martin Womack of Millen; three daughters, Amber Womack, Traci Lopez and Kathy Lindsey, all of Millen; three sons, Robbie Womack of Waynesboro, Joe Hammock Jr. of Millen and Kim Dolan of Vidalia; three sisters, Billie Shaw of Rocky Ford, Retha Moore of Millen and Mary Hopkins of Summerville, S.C.; a brother, Ernest Womack of Millen; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and a special employee and friend, Charles Saxon Sr. Funeral services for the former sheriff were held 2:30 p.m. Monday, at Elam Baptist Church with Dr. Maurice Crowder officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were Guy Bulloch, Dewayne Perkins, Gerald Hill, Larry Barron, Robert Oglesby, Dwayne Herrington, Don Dasher and George Gunn.
