(Jim) Carroll williamcarrollj@bellsouth.net September 1, 2009, 8:55 am The Wrightsville Headlight Front Page February 1, 1945 Scott Man Held for Manslaughter Charge of murder preferred against Elmo Buttersworth, Scott farmer in connection with the slaying of his father-in-law, was reduced to manslaughter and bond fixed by a three-justice court here Friday afternoon of last week. Buttersworth immediately made bond and was released from custody, Sheriff Dewey Hall reported. The three-justice court consisted of Justices R. R. Martin, Clayton Lord, and J. T. Miller. In a statement to the court, Buttersworth claimed that his father-in-law, Hillery Pope, was advancing upon him with a gun when he shot and killed him at their home in the Scott section. The two men and their families lived in the same house, it was stated.
