Death of D. E. Clark, Johnson County’s Oldest Citizen
On last Wednesday morning, Mr. D. E. Clarke who lives near New Home Church, in 
this county, was found dead in his bed.  Mr. Clarke had been in feeble health 
for several years and his death was not unexpected.  Had he lived a short 
while longer he would have celebrated his 91st birthday.  He was one of the 
pioneer citizens of Johnson County.  He was a good man, and his “days were 
long in the land which the Lord had given him.”  He was buried Tuesday, 29th, 
at New Home Cemetery with Masonic honors, Revs. M. R. Little and E. L. 
Harrison assisting.  He is survived by two sons, A. T. Clarke of this county 
and A. E. Clarke of Toombs county, and two daughters, Mrs. Cicero Perry, of 
Lyons, GA and Mrs. Benjamin Brantley, of Donovan, and other relatives and many 
friends who revere his memory.  


Additional Comments:
David E. Clark was born in Georgia October 20, 1822. 

David married twice.  First, Mary Ann Katherine Cowart in Washington Co., 
Georgia, June 15, 1848.  Mary Ann was born in Georgia December 7, 1822.  She 
died August 22, 1898 in Johnson Co., Georgia.  Mary Ann is buried in New Home 
Cemetery.
        
Second, David married Ardelia Elizabeth Smith Kersey in Johnson Co. in October 
6, 1899.  rdelia died November 2, 1920 in Johnson Co. Georgia.  

David E. Clark enlisted as a Private in the Confederate Army, Co. F., 4th 
Regiment (Clinch’s) Cavalry September 27, 1863.  His unit surrendered March or 
May of 1865 and David E. Clark was listed on a Prisoner of War roll as being 
parolled at Augusta, Georgia May 23, 1865.
