Johnson County’s last WWI Veteran dies. The last living World War I veteran in Johnson County died Wednesday. William Andrew Perry, who would have been 100 years old in January, he was a member of the 310th Infantry C Company in the Army during World War I. He said a few years ago in an interview that he never actually saw any action, but that was just as well. He missed basic training because he had been hospitalized with the measles and pneumonia. “He was proud of his service in World War I,” said Perry’s daughter, Sarah Martin. “He believed that if you could serve your country, you should.” Perry worked at Robins Air Force Base when he got out of the Army. He was married for 25 years to Gussie Bell Garrett, who died in 1943. He reared four of his seven children alone before he married Bessie Will Lindsay Price in 1951. They were married for 30 years until her death. Perry was a life-long resident of Johnson County. He was very active in his church, Brown Memorial Baptist. He was a lay speaker, an ordained deacon and was an associational missionary for the Mt. Vernon Baptist Association, helping establish Sunday school programs in many churches throughout the association. While a member at Brown Memorial, he taught the Men’s Bible Class for many years. He was a Training Union leader and a very active member. His children praise their father for reading the Bible every night and for the family prayer they believe kept the family together. Perry until a few years ago was one of three World War I vets in Johnson County. The others were Ernest Townsend and G. L. Lee. “He was looking forward to becoming 100,” said Mrs. Martin. “Unfortunately the Lord didn’t see fit for him to stay here that long.” Services for Perry will be held at Brown Memorial Baptist Church at 11 a.m. today. Additional Comments: William Andrew was the son of William Micajah Perry and Lougenia Virginia Clark of Johnson Co. and was born June 11, 1894. He would have been 100 in June not January as the article states. He was the great grandson of one of Johnson Co.'s pioneers David E. Clark who was a Civil War Veteran and the county's oldest citizen when he died April 27, 1913. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.8 Kb
