Thompson francist@mindspting.com November 14, 2003, 8:46 pm The Wrightsville Headlight, Thursday, July 20, 1944 Esteemed Lady Passes Monday in Sandersville Mrs. L. E. Vanlandingham, mother of Mr. J. W. Vanlandingham, prominent merchant of the city, died in Sandersville Monday after an extended illness. She was 89 years of age. Born and reared in Washington County, Mrs. Vanlandingham was married in her young girlhood and after living in her native county for several years moved to Wrightsville, where she and Mr. Vanlandingham established their home and lived until his death. She then went to Sandersville to live with her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Tompkins. Mrs. Vanlandingham was a good Christian woman and mother and had been affiliated with the Methodist Church all her life. Her membership was at Wrightsville, wher funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon. Rev. J. F. Snell, pastor, conducted the last rites, assisted by Rev. Harry Moore, in whose church ahe had worshiped in her latter years. A quartet composed of Mrs. R. B. Bryan, Mrs. Roy Rowland, and Messrs. J. W. and W. C. Brinson sang favorite selections. The floral offering was very beautiful and profuse. Pall-bearers were Messrs. S. H. Vanlandingham, Soperton; J. E. Vanlandingham, Wrightsville; Glenn Dent, Lyons; James Tompkins, Jefferson; and Hubie Shepard, Irwington, all grandsons. Besides her son and daughter, she is survived by another daughter, Mrs. J. O. Page of Harrison; one brother, Mr. J. J. Shepard of McIntyre, several neices and nephews and a host of grand children and great-great grandchildren. The Kent Funeral Home was in charge. Mrs. Vanlandingham was one of the Headlight's oldest subscribers, having taken the paper for approximately 50 years or more. Additional Comments: Elizabeth Juriah Shepherd was born in Washington Co., Georgia on 19 February 1855. She was the daughter of John I. and Tabitha Jane (Gainey) Shepherd.
