Thompson francist@mindspring.com November 15, 2003, 11:53 pm The Wrightsville Headlight, May 7, 1959 John W. Vanlandingham, 83, died after a short illness Tuesday at his home in Wrightsville. A native of Wilkinson County, he was reared in Johnson County and had lived in Wrightsville for 75 years. He was a retired merchant and farmer. He was a member of the First Methodist Church and superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School for 25 years. He was a steward and trustee of the Methodist Church. He retired from the grocery business after 27 years of operation. Married to Margaret Cullen, he is survived by his wife; five daughters, Mrs. Ola Stevenson of Wrightsville, Mrs. Sara Willborg of Houston, Texas, Mrs. Betty Booz of Rome, Mrs. Stella Boswell of Brunswick, Mrs. Irene Dent of Lyons; two sons, John S. of Wrightsville and Steve H. of Soperton; one sister, Mrs. Maxie Tompkins, Sandersville; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. E.D. Willard, the Rev. R.C. Smith, the Rev. Jack Hamilton, and the Rev. J.H. Wilson. Burial will be in the Westview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John D. McAfee, John Williams, Hayes Hall, Carl Kitchens, D. H. Mayo, and I. R. Waller. Vanlandingham We the members of the Men's Bible Class of the First Methodist Church of Wrightsville, wish to pay tribute to the memory of one of our charter members, Mr. J. W. Vanlandingham, who died May 5, 1959, was born January 9, 1876 in Wilkinson County, lived there and in Johnson County all his life. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Vanlandingham, seven children: Mrs. Glenn Dent, Lyons; Mrs. Ola Stevenson and J. E. Vanlandingham, Wrightsville; Mrs. O.K. Willborg, Houston, Texas; Mrs. Tom Booz, Rome; Steven Vanlandingham, Soperton; Mrs. Sidney Boswell, Brunswick. Seventeen grand- children and several great-grand-children. Brother Vanlandingham was superintendent of the Sunday School about 20 years, and served faithfully after his resignation as superintendent. he joined the Men's Bible Class and remained there until his death.
