Stewart, who reside on the line of Johnson and Laurens counties, was instantly killed about 4 o'clock Friday afternoon when he fell into a running saw at the sawmill of his father on the Johnson County farm of Mr. Stewart. Young Jakie was setting headblocks at the sawmill, a job he had been at for five years and his father was the sawyer. Jakie had squared the log and was making a particular cut. He fastened down the hook at the head block as usual and to keep the piece of timber from warping and to hold it squarely in place, he jumped across to the nearby canthook, grabbed it, and fastened it to the log, holding with full strength until his position neared the flying saw. All at once, his hold slipped, the canthook loosing its mooring in the timber and the boy fell bodily down acroos the death producing implement. His body was almost severed in two parts at the stomach and a most gruesome calamity was beheld by the onlookers as the drive belt flew off the wheel and the saw came to a standstill. An axe was secured and the young man's lifeless body cut from the fastenings. His father, sawing at the time, grabbed the boy as the saw stopped but to late to save him. The saw had cut through the stomach to the backbone and death was instantaneous. Jakie had been a good boy all his life and the family is one of the leading ones of that section. He had been prevailed upon Friday afternoon to defer a fishing trip with a young man friend of Dublin to finish up some hurry orders then at the mill and according to his father's wishes he remained at his post only to meet this fate. Funeral services and interment place this afternoon at Piney Mount Church, the services being conducted by the Rev. Mr. McCullough of Vidalia. Additional Comments: Jakie was born to Archie R. Stewart and Rebecca Dawson Stewart, both buried at Piney Mount.
