Solomon Dorsett, James Collins, Matthew Daly, John Marsh Proved by Solomon Dorsett & by James Collins. William H. Marsh was the son of Robert Marsh. He was born January 25, 1757 near Pittsboro, North Carolina and died November 2, 1854 in Chatham County, North Carolina. William Marsh married Sarah Stewart, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Stewart about 1782. Sarah was born March 8, 1764 in Chatham County, North Carolina and died August 5, (1832?) in Chatham County. William was a rather small but sturdy man. He was a courier in the American Revolution. William stated that he served in the North Carolina Line for eleven months in his application for a Revolutionary War pension which was presented to and approved by the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Chatham County, North Carolina 14 November 1832. In the application he stated that he is 73 years of age; born near Pittsboro (NC) 25 January 1757. According to his statement he served in North Carolina and the Cheraw, Pee Dee River, headwaters of Lynches Creek, Thompson's Creek, and the Camden areas of South Carolina primarily in suppressing the Tories while serving in the "Light Horse Company". He states his service in South Carolina "was a short time after the disasterous defeat of General Gates before Camden and the consequent dispersion of the American troops under his command upon which occurrance the hopes of the Americans were greatly depressed and those of the Royalist party or Tories proportionally increased; and the effect was that the Tories now in great numbers throughout the Carolinas were perpetrating all kinds of outrages, robbing, burning, and murdering with unrestrained and merciless barbary; being doubtless prompted to then lawful acts by confident expectation that the whole country would be forwith over run". William Marsh appears to have held the military rank of Captain in the Continental Army. Capt. Marsh lived on Rocky River in what is now Matthews Township, his home being about 3 miles east of Siler City. He died at the age of 103 years, 9 months, and 7 days and is buried near the above mentioned home in a family graveyard.
