Jones COUNTY GA Bios File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Benwaggi@aol.com Ben Halsted http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/jones/bios/halsted.txt THE FAMILY OF JONATHAN HALSTED AND ISABELLA NEIL Jonathan Halsted was born 21 December 1769 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. On 10 December 1789 he married Isabella Neil, probably in either Hempstead, Long Island, New York or Elizabeth, New Jersey. Isabella was born 7 July 1771 in New Jersey, the daughter of Captain Daniel Neil and Elizabeth Mallam. Captain Neil was Captain of Artillery, Elizabeth, N. J. by the end of 1776. Captain Neil and his Company crossed the Delaware River successfully with General Washington and 2,400 Continentals and was assigned to General Knox's Brigade. The following day he took an active part in the Battle of Trenton, where the Hessians took their great defeat on 26 December 1776. At the attack on New Brunswick by Washington they marched from Princeton toward Kingston. They destroyed the bridge over Millstone Creek and headed toward Morristown. American losses of about 35 included Captain Neil who was killed 3 January 1777 at the battle of Princeton (Passaic, New Jersey) while with General George Washington. His wife remarried, to Col. Samuel Hay of Newark of New Jersey. It is not know what Jonathan did, or where he lived, from the time of his marriage until he was appointed Indian Agent and Factor about 1800 in Georgia. He could have lived in New Jersey, he could have worked in Washington, D. C. at the Bureau of Indian Affires, or he could have lived and worked in Georgia. But there is a record that Jonathan Halsted was appointed United States Agent of Indian Affairs and Factor at Ft. Wilkinson, Milledgeville (then the capital) Georgia in 1800 by H. Dearborn, (Secretary of War) the appointment to continue at the pleasure of the President, salary $1,000 per annum. About 1806 Jonathan was transferred to Fort Benjamin Hawkins (present day Macon), Georgia as Indian Agent and Factor. Records of the Office of Indian Affairs, U. S. Department of the Interior, show that Jonathan Halsted served in this capacity until his death in 1814. It is a family tradition that Jonathan Halsted received several large tracts of land in Georgia for his services. This is confirmed in the Jones County, Georgia, Tax Lists: 1811 - 333 Acres, St. Maries; 1813 - 3,186 3/4 Acres - St. Marey (actually Saint Marys, Camden County, Georgia); 1821 - Jonathan Halsted (Deceased) 2 Slaves; 3000 Acres lying in different parts of the state. Tax lists also show that Daniel Halstead and William Halstead were both defaulters on their taxes. After Jonathan's death in 1814, his widow Isabella lived on land he had purchased in Jones County, Georgia where she died in 1831. (Data copied from a letter written by "Royce", 2/1993.) Source: Correspondence from Joe V. Magnan of Macon, Georgia to "Royce", 2/1993. Jones County, Georgia Wills: Book A, Pages26-27. Probated 2 January 1815. Jonathan Halsted's Will: My will is that Isabella Halsted, my wife, shall occupy and enjoy all the property tenable or personal that shall be in my possession at my death; that she shall be sole and only Executrix and with liberty for me to do and act as she shall think proper during her lifetime. At her decease the residue of the property, that I may die posses of shall go to my children share and share alike. I hereby give freedom to Prince my slave at the death of my wife, Isabella, with whom he must serve until her decease. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty-seventh day of August 1814, and in the Independence of U. S. 39. Jonathan Halsted. Signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of John Simmons, R. Hill, J. H. Renton. Georga. Jones County. Personally came and appeared in Open Court, James Horatio Renton one of the subscribing witnesses to the within will who being duly sworn deposeth and saith that he saw Jonathan Halsted, deceased, execute the within will and that it is the true last will and testament of the said deceased and that John Simmons and Robert Hill were present and subscribed their names as witnesses thereto. Sworn to in Open Court this 2nd day of January, 1815. J. H. Renton. H. M. Comer, Clk O. C. See Will book "A2,69-70". Government correspondence continued concerning Jonathan Halsted's actions as Factor and agent at Fort Hawkins, Georgia even after his death in 1814. The Territorial Papers of the United States, Volume XVIII - Territory of Alabama 1817-1819, Page 137, records correspondence dated 25 August 1817 from Thomas L. McKenney to the Acting Secretary of War concurring in a debt of $2,250 incurred by "Mr. Halstead", authenticated by the "late Colonel Hawkins" and pointing out that delayed payment of subject claim was injurious. On Page 433 of the same document, in a letter dated 9 October 1818, it is pointed out that "Mr. Halstead was the Government Agent and contracted the debt with the Factory". I guess that the debt was eventually paid by the War Department. I have trouble tracing many of Jonathan's children. C. SHOP page 6". This note is copied onto the page of Joe V. Magnan's correspondence with "Royce 2/1993). I have not been able to find this genealogy of Jonathan. Also, based on Tim Holstead e-mail of 8-9-1999. "I read your two messages. Ben, in the case of your ancestors, all documentation of Jonathan's name was spelled Halsted. His sons typically spelled their name Halsted, where it was apparent that it was a valid signature. The only exception to this was Jonathan's son Daniel Neil. He moved to Alabama, and he and all of his descendants spell the name Halstead." Tim Holstead's address is: 211 Jordan Rd West Monroe, LA 71291. Benjamin D. Halsted, April 1999. Updated February 2001. Jonathan Halsted died 21 December 1814 in Jones County, Georgia - probably at Fort Benjamin Hawkins. Magnan quoted as sources "several books on Pulaski County published by the Central Georgia Genealogical Society." 6. Benjamin Hawkins Halsted, our direct ancestor, was born about 1804 at Fort Wilkinson, Milledgeville (Baldwin County), Georgia. The full story of Benjamin Hawkins Halsted family and descendants will be included in the next chapter. 7. William Mallam Halsted, born about 1806 in Georgia. H. Williams Stevens genealogy carries year of birth as 1812. Middle name Mallam corrected from Malcolm per article by "Royce", 2/1993, written to Joe V. Magnan, Telephone (912) 743-9902. Copy provided to me by Tim Holstead. No other data is known. 8. Robert Wiley Halsted, born about 1808 in Georgia and died about 1848 in Pulaski County, Georgia. The 1840 Census for Georgia carries an entry for R. W. Halsted of Pulaski County. H. William Stevens genealogy carries year of birth as 1809. Another source: Notes made by a Halsted descendant, Joe Magnan in early March 1997 and provided by letter of 24 March 1997 to Raymond Donald Holsted, of Houston, Texas. Raymond Donald Holsted provided these notes to me in Houston in February 2000. Magnan quoted as his sources "several books on Pulaski County and other surroundings published by the Central Georgia Genealogical Society". On 6 October 1832 Robert Wiley married Penelope M. Phillips (born 1810 in North Carolina) in Pulaski County, Georgia. Penelope died in 1861 in Spalding County, Georgia. They had four children, all born in Pulaski County Georgia, including: (1) Elizabeth P. Halsted, born in 1838; (2) Sarah P. Halsted, born August 1841 and (like her mother) died 6 January 1920 in Spalding County Georgia. She married Isaac N. Hair, location unknown; (3) Ethelred M. Halsted, born 1843; and (4) Robert Halsted, born 1845. This ends the story of Jonathan Halsted and Isabell Neil. We now go into the the story of The Family of Benjamin Hawkins Halsted and E. W. Hodges, next chapter. ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
