Humphries The Humphries' were one of the first settlers of Bibb/Jones County. They used to own as far as you could see on both sides of Upper River Road. There are 2 family cemeteries. Part of our History: My 4-Great Grandfather: Major John Humphries moved to a small hamlet known as Albany in Jones County from Kent County, Maryland in the late 1700's. Albany was later renamed Clinton. Clinton incorporated in 1810. Major John Humphries was a Major of GA. Militia 3-30-1811 to 07-14-1819. (Recorded page 113 GA. Military Affairs-1801-1813 A&H Dept.) In 1808 he was Justice of Inferior Court, Jones County. He was a Representative Ga. Legislative-seated: 10/01/1814/unseated 11/01/1814 (served one session). He was Justice of Inferior Court: 11-01-1817 to 05-11/1820. John and his wife Mary Moore had 3 children. Only one lived in Jones County. Cottrell, Richmond married Humphries, Hettie on 23 Jan 1817 This is one of the daughter's of Major John Humphries and Mary My 3-Great Grandfather: That was Thomas S. Humphries. Thomas S. Humphries married Nancy P. Lowe (my namesake). They had 10 children. All born in Jones County, all buried in Jones County except one (he's buried in Temple, TX). Thomas S. Humphries was also a Representative Ga. Legislature. He was also Sheriff of Jones County 01-09-1834 to 01-09-1936. He held several public offices and represented Jones County in the General Assembly when the Capitol was at Milledgeville. My 2-Great Grandfather: John Septimus Humphries, Sr. Representative GA Legislature Jones County, GA. State Senator 1857-1858. Was in 8th GA. Regiment, Co. H. Was in the battles of Atlanta and wounded at Griswoldville, GA. Given a pension for 4 years active service in the Confederate Army. He was Justice of the Peace. Also, a Mason at Sincerity Lodge in Jones County. My Great Grandfather: Thomas S. Humphries My Grandfather: Homer W. Humphries, Sr. I do have the following notes: James Thomas Humphries, one of the sons of Thomas S. and Nancy Lowe Humphries, enlisted in the Macon Light Artillery 10th Battalion on May 1st, 1862. Was sworn in by Englander and wnet to Richmond in July 1862. Spent part of his time with BG Natl. Ranson guarding RR in N.C. Was at Battles of Antietum, Manassus, Drury's Bluff and Hermuds Hundreds. He was at Appromatox Courthouse when Lee surrendered. Moved to Temple TX from Dooly County, GA abt. Nov. 1877.
