WILLIAM CALVIN1 CARSON was born June 22, 1682 in Scotland, and died November 11, 1748 in Ulster, Ireland. He married SARAH ANN FERGUSON June 07, 1704 in Londonderry, Ireland. She was born May 18, 1687, and died January 16, 1744/45 in Ulster, Ireland. Notes for WILLIAM CALVIN CARSON: Information on William and Sarah Ann Carson comes from Cemira Price, a Carson researcher who lives in Greenville, Alabama. jrh Child of WILLIAM CARSON and SARAH FERGUSON is: 2. i. THOMAS GIBSON2 CARSON, b. May 11, 1710, Ulster, Ireland; d. 1790, Green County, Georgia. Generation No. 2 2. THOMAS GIBSON2 CARSON (WILLIAM CALVIN1) was born May 11, 1710 in Ulster, Ireland, and died 1790 in Green County, Georgia. He married MARGARET MCDOWELL August 12, 1734 in Ulster, Ireland. She was born Abt. 1717 in Ireland. Notes for THOMAS GIBSON CARSON: From the notes of Cemira Price: Thomas Gibson Carson sailed with his wife and children from Newry, Ireland to America on 30 June 1773. Evidently, all of his children had been born before the family left Ireland. According to information concerning son Adam Carson, he must have been the youngest of the children. I have given the children dates of birth that seem within reason considering the date of marriage of Thomas Carson and Margaret McDowell, 12 August 1734, given by Cemira Price. If Thomas and Magaret followed the English custom of naming their children, the first son would have been William after Thomas's father, the second named for Margaret's father, and the third son named Thomas after his father. I have lined the children up in no particular order except for William, Thomas and Adam, so they are probably not in correct order and dates of birth are probably not correct, except perhaps for Elizabeth and John Wesley whose dates of birth come from Cemira Price. Children of THOMAS CARSON and MARGARET MCDOWELL are: i. WILLIAM3 CARSON, b. Abt. 1740. Notes for WILLIAM CARSON: William was born in Ireland, but married and died in South Carolina. ii. DAVID CARSON, b. Abt. 1745. Notes for DAVID CARSON: David died in Alabama and married Nancy ?. iii. THOMAS CARSON, b. Abt. 1750. iv. JOSEPH CARSON, b. Abt. 1757. Notes for JOSEPH CARSON: On 7 April 1784, Colonel Elijah Clarke certified that Joseph Carson was a refugee soldier entitled to a bounty of land. About 1790, Joseph Carson served as a captain under General John Clark, raiding the Creek Indian village of Cheehaw Town. About 1823, Joseph Carson was a teacher at Farmer's Academy. v. JOHN WESLEY CARSON, b. May 24, 1760, Dublin, Ireland; d. 1823, Jones County, Georgia. vi. ELIZABETH CARSON, b. June 05, 1764, Ireland; d. April 23, 1847, Greene County, Georgia; m. (1) JAMES MCDOWELL; m. (2) JAMES COWEN. 3. vii. ADAM CARSON, b. June 11, 1766, Ireland; d. 1843, Jones County, Georgia. Generation No. 3 3. ADAM3 CARSON (THOMAS GIBSON2, WILLIAM CALVIN1) was born June 11, 1766 in Ireland, and died 1843 in Jones County, Georgia. He married SARAH MCGOUGH, daughter of ROBERT MCGOUGH and SARAH CARSON. Notes for ADAM CARSON: Source: FAMILY SKETCHES OF JONES COUNTY, GEORGIA, VOL. ONE GENEALOGIES, by Frank M. Abbott, 1977: HISTORY OF ADAM CARSON ADAM CARSON'S father emigrated from Tyrone County, Ireland, to America in 1773, bringing his family, consisting of five sons and one daughter. They lived in South Carolina for awhile and then moved to Georgia, supposedly settling in Wilkes County. The names of the children were: WILLIAM, JOSEPH, JOHN, DAVID, ADAM and ANNIE. All the sons were engaged in the Revolutionary War. Adam was not old enough at the beginning of the war, but later on the Tories, having burned his father's residence, he enlisted in the same Company to which two or three of his brothers belonged: and at this time he was eleven or twelve years of age. His brother, JOSEPH was a Captain of the Company, and ADAM CARSON was made Orderly Sgt., and served two and one half years, to the end of the war. His company was chiefly engaged in expelling the Indians, Tories, and English from Georgia and also engaged in a Florida Campaign, serving under COLONEL ELIJAH CLARK; and they were also in both sieges of Augusta, Georgia, the battle of 'Long Cane' and many other conflicts. Following the war, he (Adam) resided in Greene County, Ga., and commanded the militia of that County, resigned from that position March 31, 1791, being succeeded by JAMES STEWART. He then moved to what is now Jones County, Ga.; but at that time it was part of Baldwin County. On July 14, 1806, he was elected sheriff of what was then Baldwin County, being commissioned by GOV. JOHN MILLEDGE, at the State Capital, at Louisville, Ga., - - and as sheriff he served for six years. "ADAM CARSON married SARAH McGOUGH. To this union was born nine children of which six were boys and three girls. Two of the boys, DAVID P. and JOHN P. CARSON married Jones County girls; daughters of BEN FINNEY and HENRY FINNEY. The youngest of the six boys was named for his father, ADAM CARSON, and he became a resident of Marion County, Ga., and was duly elected Captain of the company formed in the County to engage in the Confederate war; saw service with ROBERT E. LEE'S Army in Virginia, and gave up his life for the "Lost Cause". "He was prominent in several Counties, lived an honorable life, and died in October 1843, at the age of seventy eight years. He was buried on his farm at Round Oak, Ga. Later on when "Sherman marched through Georgia," the old home was sacrificed in that war between the States. (The above incomplete history of ADAM CARSON was gathered by his only surviving grandson, T.J. (PONY) CARSON, of Jackson, Ga., March 6, 1931.)" The Last Will and Testament of Adam Carson of Jones County, Georgia, names the following children: William P. Carson; Isabella Carson Thomas (John H. Thomas); John P. Carson; David P. Carson; deceased daughter Malinda Brantley (married James Brantley); James* Jones wife of John Jones; Thomas J. Carson; Adam Carson; James J. Carson; and Joseph J. Carson *Evidently the court clerk who transcribed the will into the court record book made an error in spelling the name of the daughter who married John Jones. It should have been Jennie, not James - James J. was a son. Adam Carson, Sr. signed his will on "the Sixteenth day of June in the year of our Lord, One thousand eight hundred and forty One." 16 June 1841 The will was witnessed by William G. Smith, Daniel McCloud and William Brewer and was presented at court on February 22nd, 1843 by one of the witnesses, Daniel McCloud, before the Justices of the Inferior Court Peyton T. Pitts, James Gray and Charles Hutchings. I found these two documents on microfilm at the Washington Library, Macon, Georgia and will enter the children on the family page. jrh ************************** According to one Carson family 'researcher', Dorthy Conner, , Adam Carson, Sr. was born 11 June 1764 in Ulster, Tyrone, North Ireland and was the son of Thomas Gibson Carson, b. 11 May 1710, Ulster, and Margaret McDowell, b. 12 June 1713, in Ulster. This same researcher also gives the children of Thomas Gibson and Margaret McDowell Carson the birthdates of 15 October 1735 (William A. Carson), 1759 (Thomas Carson, Jr.), 24 May 1760 (John Wesley Carson), 1762 (David Carson), 11 June 1764, (Adam Carson, Sr.), 11 Jan. 1766, (Joseph Carson), and 1768 (Elizabeth Carson). If their mother Margaret was born in 1713 , I seriously doubt that she was having children at the age of 49 - 55. The birthdate of the first child William is listed as 1735 which is reasonable. I suspect that this lady's 'research' is faulty. She lists other ancestors: William Calvin Carson, b. 27 June 1682; d. 11 Nov 1748, and Sarah Ann Ferguson, b. 18 May 1687, d. 16 Jan 1745/46, parents of Thomas Gibson Carson. William Carson, b. 1615; d 1773 in Ulster, Ireland m. Eleanor Jane McDuff in Londonberrry, Ireland. Eleanor was buried on 20 May 1712 in Londonberry. I believe that should be "Londonderry" not "-berry". Conner lists 21 children for this couple including William Calvin. Alexander Harvey Carson, b. in Ulster, Ireland, father of William Carson. Conner does, however, have the names of Adam Carson and his wife Sarah McGough/McGovie listed correctly with the exception of a daughter who married John Smith, according to Adam's will. Conner gives the date of marriage of Adam and Sarah as 8 June 1785, in Round Oak, Jones County, Georgia. However, she gives the place of birth for all of the children as Abbeville, South Carolina. ************************ Another researcher, Cemira M. Price , with whom I have corresponded descends from Adam and Sarah McGovie Carson through their daughter Malinda. Cemira starts her family tree with Adam, Sr. and lists ten children including Jennie, probably the daughter who was married to John Jones who is named in Adam's will. From Cemira's notes about Adam Carson: "He was born in Ireland and came to this country as a boy and later served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. For his service in the war he was granted a pension by the United States Government. "He became a trustee of Farmer's Academy (later Planter's Academy) about 1823. He served on grand juries in 1808 and 1810, and he also served as a Justice of the Inferior Court. He drew land in the Cherokee Land Lotteries of 1832 and 1838." Children of ADAM CARSON and SARAH MCGOUGH are: i. ADAM4 CARSON, JR.. ii. ISABELLA CARSON. iii. JAMES J. CARSON. iv. JENNIE CARSON. v. JOSEPH J. CARSON. vi. MALINDA CARSON, m. JAMES BRANTLEY. Notes for JAMES BRANTLEY: Data on this family came from Cemira Price of Greenville, Alabama. 10/3/02 jrh vii. THOMAS J. CARSON, m. MAY RAMSEY. viii. WILLIAM P. CARSON. Notes for WILLIAM P. CARSON: Source: Abbott's "Family Sketches of Jones County, Georgia", p. 13: William was killed by a run a way horse when quite a young man. ix. DAVID PORTER CARSON, b. 1814; m. MARY ANN FINNEY. x. JOHN PERRY CARSON, b. 1814; d. 1894; m. MARY ANN REBECCA FINNEY, November 15, 1842, Jones County, Georgia; b. 1823; d. 1884.
