Jul 1837 d. 19 Jan 1917 age 80 NOTE: It is my belief that Clinton Cemetery was originally two separate cemeteries. I don't know if you have ever been there, but one part is surrounding Clinton Methodist Church. The other section overlooks Clinton Methodist Church from the opposite side of the road; however, that section fronts on another road which is immediately adjacent to the original Clinton townsite. This section is seriously overgrown in brush and trees, whereas the Church section of the cemetery is relatively well-maintained. I don't know if there is anyone who actually knows, but I suspect that one section is the Clinton Methodist Church Cemetery and the other is the Clinton town cemetery. Larry Comer ========== Additional information: CLINTON METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY Listing of those buried can be found: http://www.friendsofcems.org/Jones/default.htm ============================================= I had the occasion to visit Jones County, GA last week. I went to the Clinton Methodist Cemetery located behind the Clinton Methodist Church on Old GA Highway 11. This is one of the oldest cemeteries in Jones County, GA. Here is what I found there. There were many, many, many unmarked graves in the cemetery. Many graves were located around trees with only a rock to mark them. Some graves had grave slabs, but there were no names or inscriptions on them. There were many graves that were sunken-in places, but they had no grave slab or rock to mark them. There were several walled enclosures made of rock which were about 2-3 feet high. These were family plots. These were built by a slave named Jacob P. Hutchings. He had been born in Virginia in 1821. He was sold to Alfred George in Jones County, GA in 1842. He was a skilled stone mason. In 1974, The Clinton Methodist Church published a book entitled "Old Clinton Cemetery". This book is at the GA Archives. It has the sections of the cemetery 1-7. There are drawings for each section. The known persons are listed in each section with a rectangle with their name or names. Unknown persons are represented by a small rectangle, but with no name. Many of the cemeteries of Jones County, GA are located in the Oconee National Forest or the Wildlife Management areas of the county. Some cemeteries were destroyed during the Civil War because of the fighting nearby. We may never know who was buried in those unknown cemetery plots. If you are unable to find your relative's burial place, these may be some reasons why. Mary ========= More information about Jacob P.
