Johnston, Jr. rcj@elmore.rr.com I need some help some information on an old academy located in Jones County during the early 1800's. The name of the academy was "Jones County Academy", and it was in operation as early as 1810 and as late as 1841. I do not know if this was an academic academy or a military academy, but from the hints I have, it appears to have been a military academy. I do not have access to Jones County resources or books, so I was wondering if anyone monitoring this list might have some information about the academy. In researching my WHITE family tree, I've recently discovered that one of my ancestors, Col. Thomas White (1781-1830), of Jones County, Georgia, was a "Commander" of Jones County Academy on Nov. 27, 1810. Thomas White is recorded in Georgia military records as obtaining the rank of Major in Jones County (probably with the Georgia Militia during the War of 1812) on Feb. 18, 1811, and was on record as being a Lieutenant Colonel from Jones County between Feb. 24, 1819 and July 15, 1820. Given his title of "Commander" at the "academy", and being a ranking officer during the years of the War of 1812 and thereafter, I'm assuming the Jones County Academy was a military institute. Thomas White also served as Justice of the Peace for Jones County from Jan. 12, 1809 to Oct. 27, 1813 and served as "H. R." (not sure what that means) in Jones County between 1817-1818. Again, if anyone has any information about the academy or of Col. Thomas White, please let me know. I am most curious about this institution and what became of it. Thanks, Robert C.
