Jones County Georgia Pension CAS Christian Mitchell File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Terri Hastings Table of Contents page: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/jones.htm Georgia Table of Contents: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm Terri Hastings Lucinda Christian Mitchell's Confederate Widow's Pension Claim, Number 3655, dated August 24, 1891, Jones County, Georgia, for Warren Anderson Mitchell. Names of the People in Lucinda Christian Mitchell's Confederate Widow's Pension Claim, Number 3655: Lucinda Christian Mitchell(great great grandmother) Warren Christian Mitchell (great grandson of Henry Mitchell, Revolutionary Soldier, of Jones County, Georgia--great great grandfather) Uriah Mitchell (great great uncle)--Uriah Mitchell was serving in Co. K, 8th Georgia Mil. Volunteer, Anderson Brigade. Uriah Mitchell was wounded in August 1864, near Atlanta, while building breastworks. Henry Mitchell is related to Uriah, too. Thomas Duffy--(great grandfather)--Also mentioned in the widow's pension claim is Thomas William Duffy. Mrs. Ida Warren Mitchell Duffy, the wife of Thomas William Duffy, was the daughter of Warren Anderson Mitchell and Lucinda Christian Mitchell. Lucinda Christian Mitchell lived with the Duffys in James, Georgia. During her widowhook, Lucinda Christian Mitchell lived in three locations in Jones County: Clinton; James Station, James, and simply James, Georgia. Old County People B.F. Finney (witness affidavit) William Jackson (witness affidavit) The old peoples' signatures: S.L. Chiles, Sr. Robert N. Hardeman Zachr. Ussery Robert T. Ross, Clerk of the Ordinary, and later, Clerk of the Superior, Jones County, Georgia Robert N. Bonner, Clerk of the Ordinary, Jones County, Georgia Rebels of Atlanta (the old peoples signatures): Honorable W.A. Wright W.H. Harrison Z.D. Harrison CONFEDERATE WIDOW'S PENSION CLAIM According to the Confederate Widow's Pension Claim of Lucinda Christian Mitchell, for her husband, Warren Anderson Mitchell: Warren Anderson Mitchell was serving, on duty, in the recruiting office, at Camp Watts (Camp of Instruction Number One), near Notasulga, Alabama, when he contracted pneumonia and died on November 20, 1862. Mr. Mitchell was taken back to his old home in Clinton, Jones County, Georgia, and buried there. Clinton Campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea Lucinda Christian Mitchell survived W.T. Sherman's March to the Sea. Warren's records are hidden records, is what I think. The Federal forces were in large numbers, up to 15,000, and up to one-third of Clinton was burned. Regimental Warren Anderson Mitchell O.K., here is what I am looking at: there is no regimental history or company information included in Lucinda Christian Mitchell's widow's pension claim, and that is what I am trying to look for. Look at NARA: How many records are there at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)? There are about 2500 reels of CSA microfilm. NARA is saying that they don't have Warren's compiled service record. I am living nearby, and have searched about a dozen of NARA's 2500 reels of CSA microfilm. It is on-going research, slowly but surely, Mitchells, please do sign the records for Warren Anderson Mitchell if you know where they are. Family Records (what do you need from Ms. Hastings?): Where is the recordkeeping for the Mitchells of Jones County? Where is the family bible, please? Look for it, please. That's what it does mean. Do you know where Warren Anderson Mitchell's records are? Please do write to me. Civil War Camp Watts and Civil War Medicine The Camp Watts records are in two locations and are "use in library only" records. Why are they "use in library only"? 1. Special Collections, Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama. 2. Center for American History, University of Texas at Austin. As you know, these are two good records: Camp Watts Association document, 1862-1864; published in 1991. It includes military operations records for the Western Theatre. Samuel Hollingsworth Stout - 1822-1903 Ledgers of the Confederate Medical Director of Hospitals, Army of Tennessee. These 14 reels of microfilm include hospital; patient; and military personnel records for the Theatre. Pick and Shovel Records There are Mitchell relations in both Alabama and Texas. Please do look this information up for me. Civil War Records Civil War Camp Hospital: Conscript Hospital The name of the hospital at Camp Watts was called the Conscript Hospital. I understand that, Camp Watts, being a military training camp, was quite a large camp, and probably might have some records for Warren. Civil War Medicine Do look up Warren Anderson Mitchell's medical records for me, please. Now as to Warren, he was being treated for coughing and hacking, that's what I do see. Civil War medicine in the north was undergoing a major re-organization of its hospital field divisions in October 1862, and the South was reorganizing, too. Warren Anderson Mitchell died on November 20, 1862, while serving, on duty, in the recruiting office, at Camp Watts (Camp of Instruction Number One). Warren died of pneumonia, which, in 1862, was classified as a "non-miasmatic" disease. The common Civil War treatment for pneumonia, was using eucalyptus as a fever medication. In the South, tracheotomies were rarely used. Warm medicine. War Records This brings me to my point, Mitchells, please look up Warren Anderson Mitchell's medical records for me. It is possible to look at it for me. If the only Civil War document for Warren Anderson Mitchell is a medical record, it might be his regimental history and company information. Signing you that there is a medical record. Civil War Recruiting Records as COA The Christian records are o.k. Since Warren Anderson Mitchell's daily duties at Camp Watts were at the recruiting office, his recruiting records, as coa, might be the right records. Do look at the individual records, please. Buried Records in Jones County For example: 1956 in Macon, Georgia. The records for Lucinda Christian Mitchell's brothers, of Company F, Gray Volunteers (Jones County), 45th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, were discovered in the confederate monument in Macon, Georgia, when it was opened on removal in May 1956. This information includes Sgt. Hardy Christian, who was serving at Appotmattox, and his younger brother, Private William H. Christian, who died at New Guinea Station, (now called Guinea) Virginia, in May 1862. Who saved these records? That's what I would really like to find out. Civil War Missing Records At the end of this problem are Civil War records. These missing records are important to me. Are these records in Jones County, Georgia? Mitchell Family Cemetery Records Do you know where the old T.J. Mitchell family cemetery in Jones County is? Henry Mitchell's relatives, please do write to me and tell me where the unmarked graves are. Also, very importantly, who kept these records and where are these records located? Cemetery Records in Fredericksburg, Virginia Ichabod D. Mitchell, C.S.A. - Fredericksburg, Virginia This is the right information for Ichabod, Warren Anderson Mitchell's brother. Mitchells of Jones County, do see these records. Do you know what Ichabod's regiment and company were? Mitchells Civil War Records Thomas "Giles" Mitchell (middle initial is G., our family records do spell it out for me). Cherry Driver Fullford Mitchell's father, was name Giles Driver. Do you see any records for Tom Giles Mitchell, brother of Warren Anderson Mitchell? Did Giles survive? Tom Giles was quite young at the time of the 1850 census. Would he have been serving with the 8th Georgia Militia during the Clinton campaign? Mitchells records. Missouri Mitchell Missouri Mitchell was the sister of Warren Anderson Mitchell. Does anybody see who was her husband? ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
