Jones Co., News June 27, 1907 IN MEMORIAM John Septimus Humphries was born December 5th, 1829 and died June 13th 1907. He was the son of Thomas and Nancy Humphries, of Jones County, he being the third child of ten, al of whom are dead except two sisters- Mrs J. T. Comer, of Jones county, Mrs N.J. Kilpatrick, of Macon, and Thomas Humphries, a brother, of Temple, Texas. He lived and died in a mile of where he was born. His grand-father John Humphries, was one of the first settlers of East Macon, having moved to that place from Maryland. Afterwards moving to Jones county being among the first representatives in the Georgia Legislature and held many other offices in this county, being sheriff for several terms. John Septimus Humphries, the subject of our sketch, was happily married to Miss Eliza A. Kitchens, of Jones county on the 13th of July, 1854. Of this union nine children were born, eight of whom survive-T.S., J.W., and J.S. Humphries, Misses Ella, Juliette and Eugenia Humphries and Mrs W. E. Tyner and Mrs Minnie Walker, all of Jones county. He served all through the war between the states, belonging to the 8th Georgia regiment, Co H. He was wounded at the battle of Criswoldville, Ga. He loved home, during the 53 years of his married life he never stayed away at night only on business. He was never heard to speak an unkind work to any one. A few days before he passed away he said he was going home to rest. His sufferings were great but he bore them patiently. For four years he has been an invalid. He lost his eye sight and during these four years he could not tell his children only by their voice. Three months before his death he could not move himself in bed only as he was moved. He died Thursday and was buried Friday in the family burying place near the home. Mr. Humphries was a Mason but on account of his wife's serious illness he could not be burried with Masonic honors. He was a member of Sinceity Lodge in Jones county. **************************************************** **********************************(*** Mrs. Eliza Kitchings Humphries was born Feb 29th, 1836 and died June 17th, 1907. She was the daughter of Boaz and Mary Kitchings, being the eldest of nine children. She was born in Jones county and lived here until her death. On July 13th, 1854 she was married to John S. Humphries. Husband and wife lived together 53 years and died within four days of each other. Both were on the bed of affliction at the same time and has been confined there for years. What a pleasure it was for the children to wait on the dear old father and mother and how they miss them! She was a devoted mother. Her teachings will never be forgotten. She leaves four sisters and one brother to mourn her death. Mrs J.T. Westbrooks, of Americus, Ga., Mrs J.W. Bower of Poulan, Ga., Mrs S.B. Jones of Cordele, Ga., and Mrs. L.G. McKinney, of Gulf Port, Miss, and Mr Thomas Kitchings, of Poulan, Ga. The funeral was conducted by Rev T.E.
