Consumed in smoke, the Church of our love and dreams, Our hearts are burdened with a load it seems. Where is our altar of love, worship and prayer? Where, partakers with Thee, we found new power. We have been purged. Lord to Thee, we would turn Sanctify and cleanse us, as our hearts do burn. Where are our pews which so gladly we would fill? Eager to learn of Thee, and to do Thy will Each pew was sacred with memories of Thee; Show us Thy way Lord, as to Thee we flee. Oh! Whence went our windows, so beautiful and rare? The picture of the sower where Thou wast there, Our Church was lovely, all flooded with light, For Thy face we saw so radiant and bright. Where are our steps which led us inside Leading away from the world outside? Ansyer [sic] our prayers, oh Lord we do pray; Give us new strength for the un- known day. Where is our Dr. Willis, whose life ebbed away As the embers were dying in the heat of the day? From heaven he whispers, to us as we cry, "Just serve and work until you die". Where is the steeple, stately, lofty and high Which mounted to God above the sky? Answer us Lord to us reveal, Just why our beautiful Church had to keel. And the Lord looked down on his flock of sheep, Climbing up to Him thru mountains steep; Dry your tears and, tho, tossed to and fro, A new Church we'll build to which you all can go. The way I'll show you tho' hard it seems, The beacon is burning and brightly it gleams; The money shall come from near and far, To lead the way to the heavenly star. The corner stone shall be filled with bleeding hearts, Stript of pride and torn in parts, God's plans shall never go amiss, Salute the New Church with a holy kiss. Additional Comments: A photograph of the church burning appears at the top of this article. Barnesville's First Methodist Church was destroyed by fire on Tuesday, 15 August 1939.
