Round the little mound I lingered later, Till the setting sun was low. Thinking all my hopes had perished, In the flower I cherished so. We call it rest, but not forever, In a low and silent grave, Blessed be the Lord that taketh, Blessed be the Lord that gave. Dearest one while in death you slumber, Loving hearts know grief and pain, But beyond sad separation, I hope to meet you again. Thy sweet little cooing now is hushed Thy warm, true heart is still, And on thy dear peaceful brow, Is resting death's cold chill. 'Tis hard, so hard, I cannot speak the word, Must we, oh must we part. Dearest loved one, they have laid thee, In the peaceful grave's embrace. But thy memory will be cherished, Till I see thy Heavenly face, Thy hands are clasped upon thy breast, I have kissed thy lovely brow, And in my aching heart I know You are safe in Heaven now. One by one my hopes grow brighter, As I near thy shining shore, For I know across the river, Await my loved ones gone before. Like the dove to the ark, You have flown to your rest. From the wild sea of strife, To the home of the blest. And when I come to the gloom of the even' fall, I know the shadows that are dreary and blue, Have a path of light that will lead me to you. In that bright eternal city, Sufferings can never, never come, In His own good time he'll call me, To my rest in "Home sweet home." Mamma Additional Comments: Jeffie Aneliza Shepherd (Manry) married Willie Turner Manry on 9 Jan 1902. By the end of 1919 she had lost 3 of her 8 children: 2 in infancy and her oldest daughter in 1919 at age 15. Jeffie died in 1920. The cause of her death could not be determined--some say it was because of a broken heart.
