The Day Was Observed by the People of Barnesville in Proper Manner

Thursday of last week was a day set apart for services in honor of the 
Confederate dead and the people of Barnesville, as usual, paid tribute to the 
cause they loved so well.

The stores closed at noon and in the afternoon a large number assembled in the 
auditorium of Gordon Institute and witnessed the program which had been 
arranged.

Mr. J.W. Stafford was master of ceremonies and after an enjoyable music feature 
by Mrs. Tom Murphey, Mrs. Mary Bowden Smith, Miss Gladys Snook, Mr. James A. 
Blalock and Mr. M.W. Smith, several addresses were made, by Mrs. L.K. Rogers, 
by Mr. J.W. Stafford and by Col. W.W. Lambdin.

Col. Robert M. Howard of Columbus had been selected to make the address of the 
day. He started off in good shape, telling a number of stories, but appeared to 
be in bad voice and it was hard for him to be heard. The address was somewhat 
long and tedious to a portion of the audience. At the conclusion of the 
exercises flowers were carried to the cemetery and placed on the soldiers 
graves.

Magnificent Dinner

One of the most delightful events of the day was the magnificent dinner 
prepared for the old veterans by the ladies of Barnesville and served to them 
in the armory of Gordon Institute. It was throughly enjoyed by everyone and 
there were present at least one hundred persons, including the old soldiers and 
a few of their friends. The dinner was splendid and a bountiful one and the 
ladies were given an enthusiastic vote of thanks.
