MARY GUERRY BOYD In the passing of Mrs. Mary Guerry Boyd of Lamar County on May 21, 1962, the Methodist denomination, in both the North and South Georgia Conferences, sustained the loss of a devoted and loyal member. Mrs. Boyd had been united with the Methodist Church for perhaps a longer period of time than any other living member in Georgia, having joined the First Methodist Church in Americus, Georgia, in childhood, and for the past fifty years having been a member of Prospect Methodist Church near Barnesville, Georgia. She would have been 104 years of age on September third of this year. Through these many years, until she became physically unable, she was active in all phases of church work, serving as President of the Missionary Society, a leader of the youth in the Epworth League, and as a teacher in the Sunday School. Mrs. Boyd was a deep student of the Bible. In her late seventies she attended the Pastor's Bible School at Wesleyan College for four consecutive years, making all A's. Later she was awarded several gold stars to be placed on her certificate through correspondence study courses. She left a priceless heritage of writings: commentaries on the Bible, on outstanding characters of the Bible, along with inspirational articles on christian living and experiences. Many beautiful poems are among her "papers" (as she called them). The words of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow may well be applied to the life of Mrs. Mary Guerry Boyd: "Feeling is deep and still, and the word that floats on the surface is but a tossing buoy which betrays where the anchor is hidden." So was her outward Christian life of service but a reflection of her deep faith and inner spiritual life.
