Nash Broyles, Retired Methodist Minister Is Claimed By Death Saturday Barnesville and this section lost a valuable citizen and outstanding civic leader Saturday, October 25, 1958, when Dr. Erasmus Nash Broyles, 77, a retired Methodist minister, died at Emory University Hospital shortly after being admitted. Dr. Broyles had suffered a heart condition several weeks and had been a patient in the Griffin-Spalding Hospital. He had been dismissed to his home. A native of Mississippi, Dr. Broyles was educated at Mississippi State College where he later taught. He also served as commandant of cadets at Jefferson Military Academy before entering the ministry. Dr. Broyles served as pastor of various Mississippi churches before coming to the North Georgia Conference in 1938. He had served as pastor of churches at Rome, Atlanta, Carrollton and Barnesville. He was active in every phase of community life. He headed the recreation committee of the city council for several years and under his guidance the recreation program developed and expanded here. His favorite project was the city park, which he planned. At the time of his death, Dr. Broyles was serving as lieutenant governor of this division of Kiwanis International. He had also served as president of the Barnesville Kiwanis Club. Coming to Barnesville 11 years ago, Dr. Broyles was pastor of the First Methodist Church for five years. On his retirement from the ministry he continued to make Barnesville his home. He was elected to the city council, and was chairman of the board of trustees of the Carnegie Library, teacher of the Men's Bible Class of the Methodist Church, chairman of the heart fund for several years, and was chaplain for the city fire department. Dr. Broyles is listed in Who's Who in the clergy Religious Leaders of America, Biographical Encyclopedia, World Biography, Who's Who in Methodist. He was awarded a certificate of appreciation from the West End Business Men, Atlanta, and the Kiwanis Legion of Honor. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the First Methodist Church here with Dr. Lester Rumble, Atlanta; Dr. J. W. Veatch, LaGrange; the Rev. Clyde Callaway, Griffin, and the Rev. Ernest Kendall, Barnesville, officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Survivors include his son, Dr. James W. Boyles [sic], Starkville, Miss.; two daughters, Mrs. Ralph Heinz, Starkville and Barnesville, and Mrs. W. A. Holland, La Marque, Texas; a sister-in-law, Mrs. R. P. Wineman, Greenville, Miss., and six grandchildren. Haisten Funeral Home was in charge.
