It is hard to realize that well-known people have gone forever. Mr. Middlebrook built an empire all by himself. He was kind to very many people. Rugged, I think would be the term to describe him. His character had many facets and sometimes you might rub across a sharp corner. His office was opened in the mornings with Bible reading and prayer. I wonder what the Supreme Court would have had to say about that. He gave employment to many people who needed it. I was one of those. He loved nature and many of the finer things of life. The last card I had from him, dated June 11th and thanking me for cards I had sent him, said he was thankful he could get up and walk over the place, read a lot, write to friends, watch TV, etc. He said there were lots of birds there, which he loved very much. When he congratulated me on my 80th birthday, he said he'd never reach that point. He accepted his illness and suffering with fortitude. There is in one of my scrapbooks a picture of his entire employee personnel. I think it would be quite revealing to many critics of our Southern way of life. I believe, with his love and knowledge of so many things in nature, he would have appreciated the following: "A wonderful thing is a seed, The one thing deathless forever; Forever old and forever new, Fickle and faithless never. Plant lilies and lilies will bloom, Plant roses, and roses will grow, Plant hatred, and hatred to life will spring, Plant love, and love to you will bring The fruit of the seed you sow." - L.
