Final Rites for Mr. Owen Saturday
     Mr. John Newton Owen, 66, suffered a heart attack early Friday morning, 
April 28, and was rushed to the Griffin-Spalding Hospital where he was 
pronounced dead on arrival.
     Mr. Owen was city clerk for the City of Barnesville and had held this 
position for the past 19 years.  He was always so kind and courteous to people 
of all walks of life and was loved by everyone.  His pastor spoke of him as a 
fine citizen and a christian gentleman.
     The Owen family lived in Redbone District and Mr. Owen came to 
Barnesville to make his home in 1905.  He was a member of the First Methodist 
Church where he was quite active, being a member of the board of stewards and 
had served as chairman for a four-year term.
     Mr. Owen was a veteran of World War 1, having served over seas part of 
that time.  He formerly was in the grocery business.  He was a Mason and a 
member of the W.O.W.  He was a former member of the Barnesville Rotary Club 
and the Lamar Civic League.  He was chairman of the Selective Service Board of 
Lamar County.
     Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at three o'clock at the 
First Methodist Church in Barnesville with the Rev. Sam _oker, pastor of the 
Firth Methodist Church, and the Rev. W. Howard Ethington, pastor of the First 
Baptist Church, officiating.  Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nell Ruffin Owen; a sister, Mrs. F. A. 
Goodrum of Griffin; a brother, Mr. O. H. Owen of Thomaston and several nieces 
and nephews.
     Haisten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
