Swatts passed away, full of years and good works, joined Prospect church in 1817, and for 29 years was a faithful, consistent and zealous member, and though living in Barnesville he continued his membership with us till his death and whereas we knew him in business to be strictly honest, accommodating and kind, we rejoice that he succeeded in accumulating a competency, giving liberally to his children. We knew him socially; it was a pleasure to visit his home, enjoy his generous hospitality, to witness the loving mutual affection of parents and children, and his home was truly a Christian home, and we have known him long and loved him sincerely, we shall mourn his death. We shall miss him in his home, at the church, at the express office; the poor will miss him, the widow and orphans likewise, because Brother Swatts gave much of which the world was not aware; he gave liberally to his church and pastor. He never paraded his good deeds before men, taking care that “his left hand knew not what his right hand did;” the summons for his departure came unexpectedly to us, but his preparation was made, he was ready to go, and with joy left us to meet his Lord. His life will continue to inspire us; we will try to live as he lived, to die as he died. “Well done brother, thou hast fought the good fight, thou hast kept faith, the victory has been won, we believe, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” Therefore be it resolved: First. That a copy of these resolutions be furnished the News-Gazette for publication. Second. That a copy of these resolutions be furnished the surviving members of the family. Third. That a copy of these resolutions be entered on our church record book. C.C. Hightower [Transcribed 11/12/04 Lynn Cunningham] Note: Born in Bavaria about 1830, Mr. Swatts emigrated to the United States at age 21. In Barnesville, he was the Express Agent and at one time, the postmaster. One of his daughters, Martha Lenna, was married to Homer Bush. Homer Bush was a son of Thomas Jackson Bush and Julia Frances Leake. Additional Comments: From copy obtained at Old Jail Museum and Archives, Barnesville, Georgia. Compiled by Shanna English.
