Born on July 18, 1895, she was the widow of the Brigadier General Homer Arthur Sappington. She was born in the Redbone community of then Monroe County and was the daughter of the late John Thomas Means and the late Annie Thurman [sic; should be Thurmond] Means. Mrs. Sappington was a retired school teacher having taught first, sixth and second grades at Gordon Grammar School in Barnesville. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Circle 3 of the UMC and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Sappington served as co-chairperson for the Red Cross Christmas Seals drive for several years. Many years ago Mrs. Sappington had a column in The News Gazette called "Looking for Cooking" through which she shared some of her favorite recipes with local residents. Mrs. Sappington was widely known for her hundreds of African violets that attracted admirers from all over. She often gave talks about how to cultivate them. The centenarian took up painting during her 80s and created landscape, still life and portrait pieces. One of her hobbies was crocheting and she made afghans and bedroom slippers for family and friends. Mrs. Sappington often said she loved "people, birds and flowers." Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Althea Sappington Bergtholdt and George C. Bergtholdt, both of Hyannis Port, Mass.; a sister, Jewel Means Bankston of Atlanta; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday, March 26, 1996 in the First United Methodist Church of Barnesville. Interment followed in the Owen-Sappington Family Cemetery in the Redbone community of Lamar County. The Rev. Alan Smith officiated. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the Allie Sappington Memorial Fund of the First United Methodist Church or to a favorite charity.
