Sappington Brigadier Gen. Homer Arthur Sappington, 95, of 149 Holmes Street, died Jan. 8 in Barnesville. He was a native of Monroe County, son of the late Henry Newsome Sappington and the late Quintine Owen Sappington. Gen. Sappington was a graduate of Gordon Miliary Institute and had a distinquished [sic] military carerr which began when he joined the Barnesville Blues as an enlisted man with the U. S. Army in 1914. He became a sergeant during the Mexican border war in 1916 and was promoted in World War I and World War II. He retired as a colonel and was later awarded the rank of honorary Brigadier General by the National Guard. The local National Guard armory was dedicated the Homer A. Sappington National Guard Armory in his honor last September. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and was chairman of the building committee when the sanctuary was rebuilt after a destructive fire. Until recently, he was an active member of the American Legion and the Barnesville Rotary Club. Gen. Sappington was the only surviving charter member of the Rotary Club at the time of his death. He was a postmaster for some 10 1/2 years until his retirement. Gen. Sappington was the Barnesville-Lamar County citizen of the year in 1984. His son, Rear Adm. Merrill Sappington, preceded him in death in 1983. Survivors include his wife, Allie Means Sappington of Barnesville; a daughter, Althea Bergtholdt of Hyannis Port, Mass. and three grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held Jan. 11 in the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. David Naglee officiated. Burial was in the Owen-Sappington family cemetery in the Redbone Community of Lamar county. Haisten Funeral Home in Barnesville was in charge of arrangements.
