While swimming in the Alapaha river near Milltown in company with five other young men, Bennie Pafford, aged 18, was drowned. The body has not been discovered. The young man jumped in the river at the railroad bridge, intending to swim down stream to the steel bridge, and was swept on by to his death. Two others, Donald Darsey, and Cranford Peters, missed their hold, but they were rescued by young Lawson Patten, who was with them.
