Elizabeth Smith) was born January 20, 1893 in Rockledge, GA. He died November 12, 1961 in Laurens County, GA. Horace was the second of five children born to Hardy Smith Spivey and M. Elizabeth Smith. The 1910 Federal Census shows that Horace (age 17) single, attending school and working on the family farm with his parents: Hardy S. Spivey (age 52) living in Laurens County Georgia on a farm that he owned free and clear, and Lizzie Spivey (age 39). His parents had been married for 22 years at the time of the census, had 5 children and all the children were living; three other children were also living at home: Tom (age 15) single, attending school and working on the family farm; Nellie (age 11) single and attending school; Otis (age 6) single and attending school. The oldest son, Arthur (age 20) was newly married, a farmer renting a farm next door. The 1920 Dooly County Census taken in January shows Horace Spivey (age 27), renting his farm, a farmer, living on Pinehurst/Findley Road. In the same household were his wife, Olivia "Liby" (age 20), married, could read and write, no occupation and William Douglas Spivey (age 11 months), son. On the same road within a few farms were Olivia's uncles, William Harp and John Harp with their families. The 1930 Federal Census, taken on April 9th, shows that Horace (age 37), Olivia (age 30) and their children, Douglas (age 11) and Evelyn (age 8) were renting a farm at $200 per month on Vienna-Hawkinsville Road. The census showed that Horace was 26 years old and Olivia was 18 years old when they first married. The census shows that Horace's occupation as farm labor, and Olivia was a teacher at day school. The census also showed that he and both his parents were born in Georgia, and his two children, Douglas and Evelyn, were attending school. He was a skilled carpenter by trade; did a lot of carpentry work in Laurens and Dooly Counties. He built the home for Horace Harp in Pinehurst, GA. After his first wife, Olivia, died, he took his two children, Evelyn & William to the Robertson farm in Pinehurst, Georgia to live with their grandparents. Evelyn went to live with him and his second wife, Corrine in Dublin, Georgia for awhile after she graduated from high school. He was out fishing with Mr. and Mrs. Earl Drew on Hall's Lake in Dublin, GA on November 12, 1961 when the boat capsized and he had a heart attack. At the time, Horace Spivey made his home with the Drew's at 815 North Church Street, Dublin, GA. Note: Horace is buried at the foot of his sister, Nellie Spivey Hanson at Blue Springs Church Cemetery. I have installed a grave marker for my grandfather, Horace. To get to Blue Springs Cemetery: Take exit 67 off of I-16 between Dublin and Savannah, turn right on State Route 29 and go about 1.5 miles, turn left on Rockledge Road and left at dead end (Thigpen Cemetery Rd.) and then turn right onto Rockledge/Blue Springs Road, the Blue Springs Baptist Church is 1.9 miles on the right.
