Civil War military records of Jackson Pope:

First, a note from the Georgia Archives:

As the Confederate government evacuated Richmond,
Virginia, in April 1865, the central military
records of the Confederate army were taken to
Charlotte, North Carolina. After that town was
captured, the records were transferred by Union
officials to Washington, D.C., along with other
confiscated Confederate records, and preserved by
the U.S. War Department. In 1903, the secretary of
war persuaded the governors of most southern states
to lend to the U.S. War Department those Confederate
military personnel records kept by the states so
that they could be copied. These service records
were compiled by extracting information about
individual soldiers from company muster rolls,
hospital registers, and prisoner of war lists, and
other sources. The data were copied onto individual
cards that, along with any original documents, were
filed by military unit and arranged alphabetical
index to these records was created. These compiled
service records are now part of the holdings of the
National Archives in Washington D.C.
