Gains Street Dublin Georgia Dear Madam: I advise you from the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim 7539, it appears that Hardy Smith was born in Johnston County, North Carolina. Date not stated. While residing in Cumberland County, North Carolina, he enlisted and served as a private with the North Carolina troops as follows: From April 10, 1779 three months in Captain King's Company, Colonel Jonas Johnson's Regiment and was in the battle of Stone?; from July 2, 1781, three months in Captain Thomas Hadly's Company of Light Horse, in Colonel Thomas Armstrong's Regiment, and was discharged after the surrender of Cornwallis. He was allowed pension on his application executed May 6, 1833, at which time he was living in Laurens County, Georgia, aged seventy-six years. The soldier married November 16, 1796, in Washington County, Georgia, Rebecca Thompson. She died in Laurens County, Georgia, in August 1835, and he died there in February, 1842. Their surviving children in 1852 were Thompson, Hardy and Loftin, all residing in Laurens County, Georgia. A son, Stephen, by the soldier's first wife (her name is not given) was living in Baker County, Georgia, in 1852. Herewith is returned your drawing of the sword.
