(Jim) Carroll williamcarrollj@bellsouth.net May 10, 2010, 3:38 pm The Dublin Courier-Herald Dispatch & News Front Page June 15, 1936 Three Escapes Seize Car After Escaping From Gang This Afternoon A wide spread search was underway this afternoon for three white convicts who escaped from the county chain gang system and held up Clarence Carroll, took his car and fled. Deputy Sheriffs J. L. Jackson, B. F. Branch, and M. D. Singleton and other officers joined in the search. First news of the escape, theft of the car, and hold up came when Mr. Carroll telephoned in from the Marie community that he had been stopped by three men, and his car taken. It was understood that only a small quanity of gasoline was in the car tank at the time. Mr. Carroll, who was accompanied by his family, was waived down, and his car then seized at the point of a pistol. Names of the convicts and the camps from which they escaped was not immediately available. It was reported that the convicts fled in a county truck and it broke down. An unconfirmed rumor also had it that Mr. Carroll's car had been found abandoned.
