(Jim) Carroll williamcarrollj@bellsouth.net April 18, 2012, 12:43 pm The Dublin Courier Herald 3-21-1964 Funeral Rites Held Sunday For Mr. Gibson Funeral services for Jessie Lee Gibson, 68, 127 Hillcrest Drive, were held Sunday afternoon at Townsend Chapel on Gaines Street with the Rev. Frank E. Singleton and Chaplin W. T. Ivey officiating. Burial was in Dublin Memorial Gardens and Townsend Brothers Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Pallbearers included Herschel Drake, I. C. Davis, Edgar Smith, W. L. Dixon, D. W. Thompson, James Price, Kenneth Hilburn, and Bryan Hilburn. Native of White County, Mr. Gibson enlisted in the US Navy on Feb. 21, 1914 and served actively during World War I. He re-enlisted after the war and served on the US Cincinnati and the US Pittsburgh. When the attack was made on Pearl Harbor, he was at the scene on the US Suwanee and completed 30 years of duty Jan. 26, 1945 and was released July 9 of the same year. He died Saturday morning in a local hospital after a month's illness. At the time he had served 15 years with the Veterans Administration making a total of 45 years with the Civil Service. he was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors are his wife, the former Miss Reitha Keen; one son, David Brooks Gibson of Milledgeville; one daughter, Mrs. Jessie Mae Hilburn of Dublin; one grandchild; and a number of bieces and nephews.
