Mr. Shepard was taken sick about a week ago with pneumonia. He was born August 2, 1840 to Edward and Winifred Sandford Shepard in Laurens County and was 63 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Shepard was a valiant Confederate soldier and fought bravely for the cause he thought was right. He enlisted (March 4, 1862) in the 14th Georgia infantry Regiment, Company H. Mr Shepard was Wounded on Dec. 13, 1862 at Fredericksburg, VA and captured in the battle of the Wilderness on May 6, 1864 and was placed in Elmira Prison (NY) until his release on June 19th, 1865. For several years Mr. Shepard had charge of the pauper farm as superintendent. Mr. Shepard is survived by a wife (Melissie Nobles Shepard ) and five children. One of his daughters, Mrs. C. W. Horton (Emma), is a resident of Baldwin County and was present at the death of her father. The remains of Mr. Shepard were interred at Bluewater church cemetery Sunday afternoon (April 30, 1904).
