S. H. Williams of Sumter County served as a witness for him. He Married Charlotte Mary Youngblood on November 1, 1866. He died November 6, 1917 in Sumter County, Georgia. Questions for Applicant What is your name and where do you reside? Allen Avery in Andersonville, Georgia. (Sumter County). How long and since when have you been a resident of this State? All My life. When and where were you born? November 11th 1840 in Lee County, Georgia. When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? June 1861, Co. B, John W. Stokes Captain, 11th Georgia Infantry, Anderson's Brigade. How long did you remain in such company and regiment? Until the end of the war. I was captured at Gettysburg and was taken to Fort Delaware and from the there to Point Lookout where I was paroled, because of this I was not with my company when it surrendered. When and where was your company and regiment surrendered and discharged? Surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia on the 9th day of April 1865. Were you present with your company and regiment when it was surrendered? If not present, state specifically and clearly where you were, when you left command, for what cause and by whose authority? I was at Point Lookout in prison. I was captured at Gettysburg and was paroled and went home at the time of Gen. Lee's surrender. How much can you earn (gross) per annum by your own exertions or labor? Nothing. What has been your occupation since 1865? Fishing when able to do so. Upon which grounds do you base your application for pension? Give a full and complete history of the infirmity and its extent. Kidney disease and Lung disease, nearly blind How were you supported during the years 1899, 1900, 1901, and 1902? By my children, but I have one under 21 years and he is my dependent for a living. What was your employment during these years? I fished when able. Have you a family? If so, who composes such family? Give their means of support? Have they a homestead, or other property? Their ages and how employed? I have a wife and on son. He is married and has his own family to support. Have you ever made an application for pension? Yes, but it was lost. Questions for Witness What is your name and where do you reside? S. H. Williams in Sumter Co. Georgia. Are you acquainted with Allen Avery if so, for how long have you known him? Yes, ever since April 1861. Where does he reside, and how long and since when has he been a resident of this State? He resides in Sumter County, Georgia. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? Co. B, 11th Georgia Regiment, in Atlanta, Georgia by Maj. Calhoun. I was there. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? I was. How long did he perform regular duty? From July 3rd 1861 until July 1863 where he was captured by the enemy. When and where was his command surrendered? Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Were you present when it surrendered? I was. Was applicant present? If not present, where was he? When did he leave his command? For what cause? He was not; he was at home on furlough after July 1863. He left command in July 1863 detailed to drive beef cattle by the Officers of his command. What are the applicant's occupation and physical conditions? His health is bad. He fishes when able. Is the applicant unable to support himself by labor of any sort, if so, why? I think he never was a healthy man. Give a full and complete statement of the applicant's physical condition that entitles him to a pension. While in the army he had chronic diarrhea after having measles and never was very stout afterwards. Who composes family? What property has they? His children are all of age. All very poor and I think one son works to support the family. Letter wrote by S. H. Williams for Allen Avery's pension Americas, Georgia May 23rd 1904 Allen Avery was a member of Co. B 11th Regiment Georgia Volunteers which was mustered in service on the 3rd day of July Eighteen hundred and Sixty - one by Maj. Calhoun in Atlanta, Georgia and served from that date until July 1863 when he was detailed to drive beef cattle. The entire squad was taken prisoner. I did not see Allen Avery anymore until some time in July 1864. I was wounded on May 6th 1864 and came home on furlough. I learned here at home that Avery was at home on furlough and I went to see him nd several others of my company that was at home to send them back to the company. I found Avery and other sick. Allen Avery had chronic diarrhea. I saw the Enrolling Officer Pony Hollis of this district and told him to take the entire squad before the board of doctors at Albany and those that were able to do duty to send them to the company. Allen Avery was one that was pronounced unfit for duty and was left at home. I did not see him any more until after the surrendered though he was not a deserter. I returned to Virginia. S. H. Allen Avery was at home at the time that his absence is not accounted for sick so said the board of doctors with chronic diarrhea and has the same disease. Allen if illiterate and not very intelligent but did his full duty as a soldier when able. *Lumpkin Bowen, Private Pension: His wife filed for his pension as a Indigent Widow of a Confederate soldier in Mitchell County, Georgia. William S. Bowen served as a witness for her. Questions for Applicant What is your name and where do you reside? Polly Bowen (Putnam, Georgia). How long and since when have you been a continuing resident in the State of Georgia? All my life. When, where, and to whom were you married? 1868,Lumpkin Bowen, Terrell County. When, where and in what company and regiment did your husband enlist as a soldier in Confederate Army or Georgia Militia? May 1861, Lee County, Co. B 11th Georgia Vol. When and where did the commands of your husband surrender or discharge from the army? April 9th 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Was your husband personally present at the time of the surrender or discharge of this command? Yes. Was he captured by the enemy at any time? No. When and where did your husband die? May 8, 1901 in Mitchell County, Georgia. We were living together. Questions for Witness What is your name and where do you reside? W. S. Bowen in Camilla, Georgia. How long and since when have you known Polly Bowen? 54 years. How long and since when has she continuously resided in this state? All her life. When and to whom was she married? How do you know? To Lumkin Brown in 1868. I was at the wedding. How long and since when did you know Lumpkin Bowen her husband? About 60 years. When, where and in what company and regiment did Lumpkin Bowen enlist? May 1861, Lee County, Co. B, 11th Georgia Vol. Were you a member of the same Company? Yes. How long within your personal knowledge did he perform actual military service with his Company and Regiment? Until April 9, 1865. When and where did his command surrender, and was discharged? April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Where you personally present at surrender? Yes. Was the husband personally at surrender? Yes. *Nicholas M. Bowen, Private Pension: He filed for pension in Worth County, Georgia. G. Willis of Sumter County served as a witness for him. On Oct 27, 1924 he filed application for total blindness by reason of old age. He married Martha Garrett on November 2, 1871 in Terrell County. He died on July 17, 1925 in Worth County, Georgia. He is buried at Poulan Cemetery - Section 4 in Worth County, Georgia. Questions for Applicant What is your name do you reside? N.M. Bowen in Worth County, Georgia. When and where were you born? April 21, 1838 in Baker Co. Georgia. When and where and in what company did you enlist or serve? Enlisted in Lee County, Georgia in April 1861 Co. B 11th Georgia. How long did you remain in such company and regiment? About 4 years. When and where was your company and regiment surrendered or discharged? At Appomattox Court House, Virginia on the 9th day of May 1865. Were you present with your company and regiment when it was surrendered? Yes. J. J. Hall in Worth County, Georgia. Are you acquainted with W. S. Bowen, the applicant, if so, how long have you known him? Since 1861. Where does he reside, and how long and since when has he been a resident of the State? In Mitchell County, Georgia. from information all his life. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? Co. B, 11th Georgia Regiment. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? I was. How long did he perform regular military duty? About 4 years. When and where was his command surrendered? At Appomattox Court House, Virginia about the 9th of April 1865. Were you present when it surrendered? No, I was in prison in Elmira, New York. Was applicant present? From information he was. *George W. Bustle, Private Pension: Filed for pension in Mitchell, Co. Georgia on the basis of age and poverty and that he has been effected by this for about five years. He was born in Laurens County, Georgia in 1831. He died in Thomas County Georgia on December 5th 1905. He fought for four years and was present at the surrender at Appomattox Court House. William C. Gill of Lee County, Georgia served as a witness for his claim for pension. He was married to Mary Jane Brown at the residence of E. Moore, of Worth County, Georgia on January 15th 1869. She filed for widow pension in Thomas County, Georgia. W. E. Chastain and James Brown served as witnesses to prove marriage and to whom. They had a son named W. A. Bustle. Questions for Applicant: What is you present occupation? Farming How much can you earn (gross) per annum by your own exertions or labor? About 50 dollars. What has been your occupation since 1865? Farming What property, effects or income do you possess and its gross value? None How were you supported during the years 1895 and 1896? Partly by help of family. Have you a family? If so, who composes such family? Give their means of support? Have they a homestead? Yes, Wife and one child. No means of support. Questions for Witness: What is you name and where do you reside? William C. Gill, Lee County, Georgia. Are you acquainted with G. W. Bustle, the applicant, if so how long have you known him? I was acquainted with one G. W. Bustle during the war in the service. Where does he reside, and how long has he been a resident of this state? Don't know I haven't seen him in over 30 years. Do you know of his having served in the Confederate army or the Georgia militia? I know that one G. W. Bustle served in Co. B of the 11th Ga. Reg. in the Army of Northern Virginia from '61 to 65. This was the only Bustle in this regiment. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist? On July 4/61 at Atlanta, Georgia in Co. B 11th Georgia regiment. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? Yes. How long did he perform regular military duty, and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier, and the time and circumstances of his discharge from the service? He served from 4 July 1861 until surrender in 1865. He was a good soldier. What property, effects or income has the applicant? None. I live near him and know all about his circumstances. *William G. Cross, 2nd Corporal Pension: Filed for pension on the basis of infirmity and poverty in Monroe County, Georgia G. Willis of Early County, Georgia served as a witness for him. John T. Webb of Monroe County, Georgia also served as a witness. W. G. Cross married E.S. Cross on March 20, 1856 in Houston County, Georgia. She stated the she believes that the marriage license was obtained in Lee County, Georgia but believes it was destroyed when the Court House of Lee County burned in 1858. William Cross died on October 11, 1865 in Tift County, Georgia. Questions for Applicant What is your name and where do you reside? William G. Cross, Monroe County, Georgia (Bolingbroke, Georgia). How long and since when have you been a resident of this State? 63 years, since birth, April 6, 1836. When and where were you born? April 6, 1836 in Burke County, Georgia. When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? July 3, 1861, Atlanta, Georgia Co. B 11th Georgia Regiment. How long did you remain in such company and regiment? From July 3, 1861 until surrender of Lees Army in April 1865. For how long a period did you discharge regular military duty? About 45 months. When, where and under what circumstance were you discharged from service? When armies surrendered in April 1865. Danville Virginia was discharged at surrender of Lees Army. What is your present occupation? No occupation, unable to labor. How much can you earn (gross) per annum by your own exertions or labor? Nothing. State which grounds you base your application for pension (Infirmity and poverty) I have had chronic dysentery since 1864 which I contracted in the Army and have never recovered from it. Has continuously grown worse with each year and has so weakened and disabled me. Questions for Witnesses What is your name and where do you reside? G. Willis, Early County, Georgia (Blakely). Are you acquainted with W. G. Cross, the applicant; if so how long have you known him? Yes, since 1859. Where does he reside, and how long and since when has he been a resident of this State? Monroe County, Georgia, I know he lived in the state since 1859. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? Co. B, 11th Georgia Regiment, July 3, 1861, Atlanta Georgia. Were you a member of the same company? Yes. How long did he perform regular military duty and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier, and the time and circumstances of his discharge from the service? Through the entire war he made a good soldier. He surrendered in Virginia in 1865 with Lees Army at Appomattox. What is your name and where do you reside? John T. Webb, Monroe County, Georgia. Are you acquainted with W. G. Cross, the applicant; if so how long have you known him? Yes, since 1896. Where does he reside, and how long and since when has he been a resident of this State? Monroe County, Georgia since 1896. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? Don't know anything of his service. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? No. What property, effects or income has the applicant? (Give your means of knowledge) None, I have lived near him since I have known him and are familiar with his financial condition. What is the applicant's occupation and physical condition? Farming, applicant is unable to labor anything on an account of his feeble physical condition. How was he supported? By his son.
