Culpepper, Private Pension: His wife Nancy R. Culpepper filed for his pension in Webster County, Georgia. J. B. Goss, J. R Stapleton, and A. J. Smith of Webster County, Georgia served as witnesses for her. Affidavit to be made by the Widow STATE OF GEORGIA, County of Webster. In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary Mrs. Nancy R. Culpepper, who being sworn according to law, says under oath that she is the widow of Joseph F. Culpepper, who was a soldier in the service of the Confederate States, and served as a member of Company B, of the 11th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers, that he enlisted in said service on or about the 3rd day July 1864, and was in the army up to September 1864. That while in the Army, he was on the 14th day of September 1864 taken sick with measles and died at Ocmulgee Hospital at Macon, Georgia. Affidavit for Three Witnesses STATE OF GEORGIA, County of Webster. In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary in and for said County, witnesses J. B. Goss, J. R. Stapleton, and A.J. Smith (each known to said Attesting Officer as truthful, reliable and reputable citizens), who severally say oath, that, from their own personal knowledge, Mrs. Nancy R. Culpepper, of the County of Webster, State of Georgia, is the widow of Joseph Franklin Culpepper, who was a soldier in Company B of the 11th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers. That said soldier enlisted in the service of the Confederate States (or the Georgia State Troops) on or about the 14th day of September 1864. That while in said service, or by reason of said service in the Army, he lost his life as follows: Was taken sick with measles and died from the effects of measles. James R. Stapleton comes before me and on oath says that he was in the same company with the said Joseph F. Culpepper and that while in service he was reported sick and soon afterwards was reported dead and he has never seen nor heard of the said Joseph F. Culpepper since and that he is satisfied that the said Joseph F. Culpepper died at the time he was reported to have died and that he had lived near by the family of said Culpeppers ever since the surrender. J. B. Goss on oath says that he was a comrade of Joseph F. Culpepper in the Confederate service and that at the time of his death he was in the service and was in the City Hall Hospital at Macon, Georgia and died on or about the 14th day of September 1864 and that he the said Goss said the said Culpepper died and he carried his body out of the ward after his death. P. L. Christian further swears that he knows the said Joseph F. Culpepper was in the City Hospital very sick and that he was reported dead and if he should not have died he has ever since been unknown and that his is just as certain that the said Joseph F. Culpepper died while in the service of the Confederacy. *P. W. Cummings, Private Pension: His wife filed for his pension in Worth County, Georgia on June 24, 1891. They were married in September 1856. Lumpkin Bowen, A. J. Mclendon, and N. M. Bowen served as witnesses for her application. Affidavit to be made by the Widow STATE OF GEORGIA, County of Worth. Personally comes Mrs. Susan Cummings who being sworn, says on oath, that she is a bona fide resident of said County of Worth, State of Georgia, and that she has resided in said state continuously ever since childhood 1820. That she is the said Widow of Peter Cummings who was a soldier in Company B of the 11th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers, that he enlisted in said Regiment on or about the month of February or March 1862 and served up to time he was killed in 1864. That he lost his life in 1864. (State here full particulars of the husband's death, when, where and from what cause.) Mr. Peter Cummings was a soldier in Co. B of the 11th Georgia Regiment of Anderson Brigade of Longstreets Corps and was killed in a charge on the enemy by my side Lumpkin Bowen in State of Virginia, month and day not remembered only that it was in 1864. He lived only about four hours after he was shot. Deponent swears that she was the wife of said deceased soldier during his service in the army as a soldier, and that she has never married since his death aforesaid, that she became his wife in the year 1856. Affidavit for Three witnesses STATE OF GEORGIA, County of Terrell. In person came before me, the undersigned Ordinary in and for said County, witnesses Lumpkin Bowen, A. J. McLendon, and N. M. Bowen (each known to said Attesting Officer as truthful, reliable and reputable citizens), who severally say under oath, that, from their own personal knowledge, Mrs. Susan Cummings, of the County of Worth, State of Georgia, is the widow of Peter W. Cummings who was a soldier in Company B of the 11th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers. That said soldier enlisted in the service of the Confederate States (or the Georgia State Troops) on or about the 11th day of March 1862. That while in said service, or by reason of said service in the Army, he lost his life as follows: It was about 5 or 6 miles below Petersburg on the Weldon Railroad. The enemy was trying to flank our Regiment. We had an engagement with there and P. W. Cummings was shot by the enemy and died that night, do not recollect the date. A. J. McLendon helped to take P. W. Cummings off the Battlefield, he was mortally wounded. N. M. Bowen swears to all the facts in regard to the service and death of P. W. Cummings but does not know anything about the Widow. *James W. Eaton, Private Pension: His wife Margarett Eaton filed for his pension in Terrell County, Georgia. N. W. Bowen and J. J. Bragg of Terrell County, Georgia served as witnesses for her. Questions for Applicant What is your name and where do you reside? Margaretta Eaton in Terrell County, Dawson, Georgia. When and where were you born? In North Carolina (Barnwell District) in 1816. When and where was your husband born - state his full name, and when were you and he married? In Barnwell District South Carolina, his full name was James W. Eaton (October 1836 married). When and where, and in what company and regiment did your husband enlist or serve during the war between the States? In 1861 - in company B, 11th Regiment of Georgia volunteers. How long did your husband serve in said company and regiment? About 14 months. When and where did your husband's company and regiment surrender and was discharge? He was discharged in July 1862 for disability. Was your husband present at the time and place when his company and regiment surrendered? He was not. If not with his command at surrender, state clearly and specifically where he was, when he left command, for what cause, and by what authority? He was honorably discharged from service in 1862; I enclosed the papers for discharge. When and where did your husband die? In 1889 in Terrell County, Georgia. What grounds do you base your application for pension? Infirmity and poverty, I have been unable to earn support for several years. Have you ever made application for pension before? No. Questions for Witnesses What is your name and where do you reside? N. M. Bowen in Terrell County. Are you acquainted with the applicant, If so, how long have you known her? I am not personally acquainted with her. Where does she reside, and how long and since when has she been a resident of this State? She resides in Terrell County, Georgia. Were you acquainted with her husband? I was. How long have you known him? Before, during and since the War. When and where did James W. Eaton enlist in the war between the States, and in what company and regiment did he enlist and how do you know this? He was a member of Co. B, 11th Georgia Regiment where I joined the army. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? I was. How long did he perform regular military duty? About 14 Months. When and where was his company and regiment surrendered and discharged from service? At Appomattox Court House, Virginia in 1865. Were you with the command when it surrendered? I was. Was James W. Eaton the husband of the applicant present? He was not. If not present, where was he? He was discharged for disability. How do you know all this? I was with the company and regiment. When and where did James W. Eaton die? In Terrell County. Where did he reside at his death and how long had he been a resident of Georgia at his death? In Terrell County, Georgia since before the war. Georgia, Terrell County. J. J. Bragg of said county being presented as a witness in support of the application of Mrs. Margarett Eaton for a pension under the Act of 1900, and after being sworn deposes and says that he is well acquainted with Mrs. Margarett Eaton, and well acquainted with James W. Eaton her husband, and lived a close neighbor to them several years, and know that they lived together as husband and wife and raised several children, and I know that she never remarried since the death of her husband the said James W. Eaton, I also know that she has no means of support, and is supported by her childern and I also know that she is not able to work, to make a support. I know all this of my own knowledge being a close neighbor for a number of years, and I have no interest in her obtaining a pension, and has not disposed of any property since the death of her husband. Eaton a Private of Captain John W. Stokes company B, 11th Regiment Georgia Volunteers who was enlisted the 3rd day of July (1861) Eighteen hundred and sixty-one to serve for the war is hereby honorably discharged form the army of the Confederate States because of old age and debility from exposure. Said James W. Eaton was born in Barnwell District in the State of South Carolina is forty - eight years of age, six feet high, light complexion, Grey eyes, light hair, and by occupation when enlisted a Brick-mason. Given at Heights of New Market, Virginia this 31st day of July 1862. John W. Stokes, Captain Commanding Company *Jesse J. Gill, Private Pension: His wife Mrs. Ellen B. Gill (Thomas) filed for his pension in Early County, Georgia. She died in Early County, Georgia on April 1, 1927 James L. Willis of Early County, Georgia served as a witness for her. How long and since when have you been a resident of this State? 69 years - Since January 1840. When and where were you born? January 1840 in Sumter County, Georgia. When and where was your husband born - state his full name and when were you and he married? In Lee County, Georgia in 1837, Jesse J. Gill, we were married July 20, 1859 in Dougherty County, Georgia. When and where and in what company and regiment did your husband enlist or serve during the war between the States? July 1862 in Company B, 11th Georgia Regiment in Starkville, Lee County, Georgia. How long did you husband serve in said company and regiment? Until his surrender. When and where did your husband's company and regiment surrender and was discharged? At surrender April 1865 at Appomattox, Virginia. Was your husband present at the time and place when his company and regiment surrendered? He was. When and where did your husband die? He died in one of the western states about 30 years ago. Upon what grounds do you base your application for pension? Age, Infirmity, and poverty. Have you ever made application for pension before? I have not. Question for Witness What is your name and where do you reside? James L. Wills. Are you acquainted with the Applicant? If so, how long have you known her? Yes, ever since about 1857. Where does she reside, and how long since when has she been a resident of this State? Early County, Georgia all her life. Were you acquainted with her husband? Yes. Where did she reside in 1861? In Lee County, Georgia. When and to whom was he married? Ellen B. Thomas before the war. How long have you know him? I knew him before the war. When and where did Jesse J. Gill enlist in the war between the States, and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know this? In July 1862, Starkville, Georgia, Co. B, 11th Georgia Regiment. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? Yes. How long did he perform regular military duty? Until Surrender. When and where was his company and regiment surrendered and discharged from the service? At the surrender at Appomattox, Virginia. Were you with the command when it surrendered? Yes. Was Jesse J. Gill the husband of the applicant present? Yes. How do you know all this? I was there with him at the time and place of surrender. Where did he reside at his death and how long had he been a resident of Georgia at his death? In Terrell County, Georgia - About 20 years to my knowledge. Do you of your own knowledge know that applicant is the lawful widow? Yes. Has she remained unmarried since her soldier husband's death, and is now his widow? Yes. *Robert Gill, Private Pension: He filed for a pension in Lee County, Georgia on April 3, 1899. S. H. Williams of Sumter County, Georgia served as a witness for him. Question for Applicant What is your name and where do you reside? R. G. Gill in Lee County, Georgia When and where were you born? Bibb County, Georgia in 1844 When and where and in what company and regiment did you and enlist and serve? In Lee County, Georgia in July 1861, Company B, 11th Georgia Regiment How long did you remain in such company and regiment? From July 1861 to April 1865 - Surrendered at Appomattox Court, Virginia. For how long a period did you discharge regular military duty? 3 years or more. When, where and under what circumstances were you discharged from service? When General Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Upon what grounds do you base your application for pension? Age, poverty, and disability, I have had rheumatism about twelve years. Are you receiving any pension? If so, what amount, and for what disability? I receive no pension from anywhere. Questions for Witness What is your name and where do you reside? S. H. Williams; I am a citizen of Smuttier County, Georgia. Are you acquainted with R. G. Gill, the applicant, if so, how long have you known him? About Thirty-eight years. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? All his life Fifty-eight years. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? In the 11t Regiment, Company B of Georgia Volunteers, Anderson's Brigade. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? I was. How long did he perform regular military duty, and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier, and the time and circumstances of his discharge from the service? He served three years and ten months and was at the surrender on the 9th of April 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Give a full and complete statement of the applicant's physical condition that entitles him to a pension? Old age and unable to work. I was First Lieutenant of Co. B, 11th Georgia regiment and had every opportunity of knowing he was a good and faithful soldier and never was absent for his company at anytime. *William Ingraham, Private Pension: He filed for a pension in Muscogee County, Georgia. T. J. Mills of Muscogee County, Georgia served as a witness for him. Questions for Applicant What is your name and where do you reside? William Ingraham in Muscogee County, Columbus Georgia. How long and since when have you been a resident of this State? All my life. When and where were you born? Oct. 1834 in Wilkerson County, Georgia. When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? June 1861 in Atlanta Georgia, Co B, 11th Georgia Regiment. How long did you remain in such company and regiment? Until close of the war. When and where was you company and regiment surrendered and discharged? April 9th 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Were you present with you company and regiment when it was surrendered? Yes. If not present, state specifically and clearly where you were, when you left command, for what cause and by whose authority? Was present, See Southern Historical Papers Vol. XV, page 102. What has been you occupation since 1865? Railroad engineer to 1894 since the just odd jobs I could do. What grounds do you base your application for pension? Infirmity and poverty, old wound in leg, shoulder, and right arm all combine in my old age to render me unable to do any work. Are you receiving any pension? If so, what amount and for what disability? No. Have you ever made an application for pension before? No. Questions for Witness What is your name and where do you reside? Thos. J. Mills Lee Co. Ala, Columbus Georgia. Are you acquainted with Wm. Ingraham, the applicant, if so how long have you known him? Yes, since 1860. Where does he reside, and how long and since when had he been a resident of this State? Muscogee County, Georgia since 1868. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist, and how do you know? June 1861 raised in Lee County Georgia, mustered at Atlanta, I was with the company. Were you a member of the same company? Yes. How long did he perform regular military duty? April 9th 1865. When and where was his command surrendered? At Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Were you present when it surrendered? No, I was at home wounded. Was the applicant present? Yes. Affidavit of Physician Partially disabled by gun shot wound of right arm, wounded in left shoulder, lower right thigh and upper right thigh, looks very old, is very feeble just able to get about and unable to do any physical labor to amount to anything. *John E. Kelly, Private Pension: His wife Mattie E. Love filed for his pension as Indigent Widow of a Confederate Soldier in Lee County, Georgia. George O. Edwards, S. H. Williams, and R. G. Gill of Lee County, Georgia served as witness for her. John E. Kelley and Mentha A. E. Witton married on January 17, 1861. After his death in Albany, Georgia in 1875 she married Dr. J.T. Love. Question for Applicant What is your name and where do you reside? , Mattie E. Love, Leesburg, Georgia. How long and since when have you been a continuing resident of the State of Georgia? In Georgia all my life and in Lee County since 1861. When, where and to whom were you married? In 1861, in Cuthbert, Georgia to J. E. Kelley. When, where and in what Company and Regiment did your husband enlist as a soldier in the Confederate Army or Georgia Militia? Enlisted in May 1861, at Starkville, Georgia, Lee County, Co.B, 11th Georgia. He was a Corporal. When and where did the Commands of your husband surrender or discharge from the Army? At the surrender. Was your husband personally present at the time of the surrender or discharge of this Command? No he was not. He died April 19th 1865. If he was not present clearly where he was? He was dead. Where was his Command when he left? He was taken prisoner at Gettysburg. He was a prisoner for two years. He came home sick Mar. 9, 1865, and died. By whose authority did he leave his Command? By being possession of the enemy. What was he physical condition when he left his command? He was wounded. In what way was he prevented from going back to command? Being prisoner and sick. Was he captured by the enemy at any time? Yes. If so, when and where captured and where held as a prisoner, and when and for what cause released? At the battle of Gettysburg, wounded at that battle held as a prisoner for two years. I do not know fir what cause released, paroled I think. When and where did your husband die? Where you residing together when he died? He died Apr. 19, 1865, in Lee County, Georgia. We were together. What property of any description did you own, hold or control for your use and its cash value, Nov. 4, 1908. Nearly a half acre lot, with a house on it, in Leesburg, Georgia, and household and kitchen furniture. Questions for Witnesses What is your names and where do you reside? S. H. Williams and R. G. Gill. How long and since when have you known Mrs. Love? Since 1861. How long and since when has she continuously resided in this State? From the time we first knew him up until present time. When and whom was she married? How do you know? Married to John E. Kelly. How long and since when did you know John E. Kelley her husband? From 1861 until he died. When, where and in what Company and Regiment did he enlist? Co. B, 11th Georgia Regiment at old Starksville and afterwards on July 3rd mustered into service at Atlanta, Georgia. Were you a member of the same company? We both were. How long within your personal knowledge did he perform actual military service with his Company or Regiment? From July 3, 1861 until July 3, 1864. When and where did his command surrender, and was discharged? Appomattox Court House. Were you personally present when it was surrendered? Both of us were. Was the husband of applicant personally present at surrender? If not where was he? He was not. He was taken prisoner at Gettysburg. By whose authority did he leave his Command and how long was he granted leave? Detailed by Officers to nurse wounded and was taken prisoner. How do you know all this? I was present. For what cause, if you know of your own knowledge was he prevented from returning to his Command? In the hands of the enemy. *George Kimbrough, Captain Pension: His wife Henrietta Kimbrough filed for his pension in Lee County, Georgia. Jesse J. Hall of Worth County, Georgia, S. H. Williams of Sumter County, Georgia, and R. Gill of Lee County, Georgia served as a witness for her. George was born December 18, 1829 near Tuskeegee, Alabama. He died November 8, 1877 and is buried in a family cemetery in Leesburg, Georgia. In 1861 in Co. B 11th Georgia. After the Battle of Gettysburg he became Captain of his company were he was wounded. After his recovery he returned to duty and was with his command near Appomattox Courthouse when General Lee surrendered. Questions for Applicant What is your name and where do you reside? Henrietta Kimbrough, Leesburg, Lee County, Georgia. How long and since when have you been a resident of this state? 62 years, having been born here. When and where were you born? Dublin, Georgia. Laurens Co. September 10th 1839. When and where was you husband born - state his full name and when were you and he married? George Kimbrough, in Alabama born in 1831. We were married Jan 1st 1857. When and where, and in what Company and Regiment did your husband enlist or serve during the war between the States? Starkville, Georgia, 1861. Company B, 11th Georgia regiment. How long did your husband serve in said company and regiment? Through the war, surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia. When and where did your husbands company and regiment surrender and was discharged? At Appomattox, 1865. Was your husband present at the time and place when his company and regiment surrendered? Yes. When and where did your husband die? Leesburg, Lee Co. Georgia. November 9th, 1877. Which of the following grounds do you base your application for Pension? Age, Poverty and Infirmity. If upon the first ground, state how long you have been in such a condition that you cannot earn your support. If upon the second give a full and complete history of the infirmity and its extent. If upon the third, state whether you are totally blind, and when and where you lost your sight. My health has failed very fast from age and my eyesight has failed also. What has been your occupation since your husband's death? Taught school and clerked. How much can you earn gross, by your own exertion or labor? Very little. How have you been supported since death of husband? By sewing and help from children. Have you a family? If so, who composes such family? Give their means of support. Have they any lands or other property? I have four children, all work for support. Have no land or property except the house. Question for Witness What is your name and where do you reside? Jesse J. Hall, resides in Worth Co. Georgia. Are you acquainted with the applicant, Mrs. Henriettta Kimbrough? If so, how long have you known her? Since 1859 Were you ever acquainted with her husband? Yes he was Captain of my company. Where did he reside in 1861? Starkville, Lee county, Georgia. How long have you known him? Since 1859 When and to whom was he married? Married about 1857 to Henrietta McBarce. Where you a member of the same company and regiment? I was How long did he perform regular military duty? From 29th day of June 1861 until close the war. When and where was his company and regiment surrendered and discharged from service? I was in prison at the time but have heard members of my company say at Appomattox. Where you with the command when it surrendered? Was in prison at Elmira, New York. Was George Kimbrough the husband of the applicant present? From the best of my belief he was. I heard members of company say. When and where did he leave his command? In April 1865 at Appomattox, Virginia. For what cause? Army disbanded. How do you know all this? By being with him in same company up to the 6th of May 1864, when I was taken prisoner and from information taken from members of company.
