Piner Martin, a local preacher and community leader. At first, the congregation worshiped in a small frame house. As the membership grew, they decided to erect a larger building on their sixteen acres of land. Members used hand tools to cut the logs and shingles. Oxen were used to haul materials to the site and the building that was erected stood until 1941. A cemetery was established next to the church. A parsonage for the pastor was located nearby, as was a school. The school became a part of the Liberty County school system. When the property was acquired for the Camp Stewart military reservation, the federal government, on October 3, 1941, paid $1,600 for the 16.66 acres of land and the church building located on it. The church building was burned by an arsonist before it was removed by the government. After they were forced by the federal government to leave Taylors Creek, church members resettled in Liberty and adjoining counties. A large number of them settled in the Hinesville, Allenhurst and Walthourville area. They, along with relatives and friends, held services in various homes and schools. In 1943, through the efforts of Rush Bacon, Fisher Slater and others, a new Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Church and Taylors Creek Cemetery was established on Georgia Highway 38 near Allenhurst. The first pastor in Allenhurst was Rev. Garfield Jackson. The church continues to grow and today is one of the most prominent churches in the county. 1 Baker, Chester, s/o Ross & Lelia Baker, March 25, 1900-Feb 21, 1911. 2 Martin, Anguess, Died Dec 15, 1909, Age 24. 3 Martin, Benjamin, Apr 15, 1860-Mar 19, 1917.
