Land Acquisition Tract Number: 878. Acreage: 2.05. Former Property Owner: Thomas Hill Church. Map Grid Coordinates - Vertical: 39.8, Horizontal: 40.3. North on GA-119 toward Pembroke to FS-22. Right on FS-22 to cemetery on right. When the federal government acquired the land for Camp Stewart in 1941, Thomas Hill Methodist Church was in the Taylors Creek Charge, Waycross District, South Georgia Conference of the Methodist Church. The pastor of the Taylors Creek Charge was Rev. Hoke Bell who lived in the parsonage at Taylors Creek. In addition to Taylors Creek and Thomas Hill, Rev. Bell was pastor of the other churches in the Taylors Creek Charge which included Willie Methodist Church and Mt. Olivet Methodist Church. He was killed in action while serving as a chaplain in North Africa during World War II. Mt. Olivet was the only church in the Taylors Creek Charge that escaped the acquisition of land for Camp Stewart. It is located near Fleming, Georgia, just outside the military reservation. The cemetery is all that is left of the community where Thomas Hill Methodist Church was located. This survey was made April 22, 1991 by Wyman May, H.L. Neal, Jr., and Charles Zoucks. ***Permission MUST BE requested at Range Control. They will outline a route based on road conditions and training in the area. *** 1 Butler, J.
