Company G 5th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Cavalry Liberty County, Georgia "Liberty Independent Troop" Captain William Lowndes Walthour OFFICERS AND STAFF Captain William Lowndes WALTHOUR, Planter, Confederate Army Officer, Railroad Executive, fourth surviving son of George Washington WALTHOUR (1799- 1859) and Mary Amelia Ann RUSSELL (1806 - 1890) was born in Walthourville, Liberty County Georgia in 1828. On 7 Nov 1848, he married Sarah Margaret Fleming (1829 - 1868) in Savannah, Georgia. She was the daughter of Hon. William Bennett Fleming (1803 - 1886) and Eliza Ann Maxwell Fleming (1801 -1871). His younger brother, Russell Walthour married Sarah Margaret's younger sister, Matilda Olivia Fleming. On 1 Oct 1861, William Lowndes Walthour was commissioned a first lieutenant in The Liberty Independent Troop, Capt Winn's Company, 1st Georgia, Volunteer Cavalry Battalion. When Captain Winn resigned because of his poor health and advanced age, part of the troop reorganized as the Liberty Mounted Rangers, Company B, 20th Georgia Cavalry Battalion under Capt. William Goulding Thompson. The other part of the troop reorganized as The Liberty Independent Troop, under command of Captain William Lowndes Walthour. He retained command of the company throughout most of the war, in most of their major battles. The unit was designated as Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment by general order on 20 Jan 1863. Col. Robert Houstoun Anderson, of Savannah, commanded the regiment. In 1864, when Col Anderson was promoted to Brigadier General, and was given command of a brigade in MG Joe Wheeler's Cavalry Corps, Army of Tennessee, Captain Walthour became the Inspector General on the Brigade Staff After the war, he was engaged in railroad construction; he was a member of the firm of Papot, Shutter & Company. One of their most notable projects was the Vicksburg and Mobile Railroad completed in the late 1860's. His wife died in Savannah Georgia 3 May 1868, and was buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah. He died in Savannah on 6 Dec 1890, and is buried beside his wife. Two sons survived them. [HOUSTON] 1st Lieutenant William Augustus FLEMING was elected 1st Lieutenant, Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry, 1 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. He was left sick at Columbia, Tennessee, and captured there 4 Sep 1864. He was sent to a Union Army Military Prison at Louisville, Kentucky, and transferred to Johnson's Island. Ohio, 6 Oct 1864. Captain Fleming was released on 16 Jun 1865. 1st Lieutenant George T. Hendley (Handley) was elected 2nd Lieutenant 1 Oct 1861, of the Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry. He was later elected 1st Lieutenant. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. Wounded at Fayetteville, North Carolina, 13 Mar 1865. 2nd Lieutenant William M. Stevens was appointed Sergeant 1 Oct 1861, then elected 2nd Lieutenant in 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. The 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry captured Lt. Willie Stevens while commanding a remount detachment at the Cay house, Walthourville, Georgia, on 14 Dec 1864. He was released at Fort Delaware, Delaware, June 17, 1865. Lt. Stevens walked home from Richmond, Virginia, after his release. 1st Sergeant Samuel Law Fleming was appointed 1st Sergeant Liberty Independent Troop, Winn’s Company, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry on 9 Oct 1861. transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment. Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. The roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent Without Leave." 2nd Sergeant Edward W. RUSSELL (Ted Russell) was appointed 2nd Sergeant, Liberty independent Troop, 1st Georgia Battalion Cavalry 22 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863.. was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, in 1865. 3rd Sergeant G. Frederick KING enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry, on 17 May 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Sergeant KING surrendered at Hillsboro, North Carolina, in April 1865. 4th Sergeant Russell WALTHOUR, son of George Washington WALTHOUR and Amelia Ann RUSSELL, was born in Liberty County, Georgia, in 1841, and died in Liberty County, Georgia on 23 Nov 1878. He married Matilda Olivia FLEMING 19 Dec 1860. She was a daughter of the Hon. William Bennett FLEMING. He enlisted in Captain Winn’s Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry on 1 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Served as Color bearer. Saved the Regimental colors and himself by giving the colors to a mounted member of the color guard and then playing dead as union troops passed over him at the Battle of Bear Creek Station, Georgia, 16 Nov 1864. [MIL REC - LAMBRIGHT] Sergeant Miles R. MIXON was born, raised and died in Hampton County, South Carolina. His grave marker lists him as "SERG CO G 5 GA CAV." He died in 1920. [FAM REC] Submitter 1st Corporal Josiah L. FLEMING enlisted on 1 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. He was wounded in one ear near Savannah, Georgia, in December 1864. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent Without Leave since 26 Nov 1864." He surrendered at Tallahassee, Florida, on 10 May 1865. He was paroled at Thomasville, Georgia, 21 May 1865. EXPANDED SKETCH 3rd Corporal John David CAY was captured with a Liberty Troop Remount Detachment by Captain Hancock’s Company, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry, at his father’s home in Walthourville, Liberty County, Georgia. He was released at Point Lookout, Maryland, June 26, 1865. 4th Corporal Edward FENNELL was wounded in action at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, and was home on wounded furlough at close of the war. 5th Corporal Fleming LAW was appointed 5th Corporal of Liberty Independent troop on 17 May 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. Corporal Law surrendered at Hillsboro, North Carolina, in 1865. Corporal James Oglethorpe VARNEDOE transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry 20 Jun 1863. He was listed as Absent Without Leave from December 1, 1864. He returned to duty from 30 days furlough near the close of the war. PRIVATES Charles Atwood ALEXANDER was born in Washington, Wilkes County, Georgia, on 4 Nov 1838, and died at Washington, Wilkes County, Georgia, on 30 Jan 1907. He was a planter and was living at Hopewell, his father’s plantation, in Liberty for several years before the Civil War. He enlisted in Captain Winn’s Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry on 1 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Elected 2nd Lieutenant and transferred to Capt. J. W. McAlpin's Company, Engineer Troops, Company E, 2nd Regiment, Confederate Engineer Troops in 1864. Appointed 1st Lieutenant 8 Mar 1865 to rank from 27 Oct 1864. He was paroled at Chester, South Carolina, 5 May 1865. After the war he returned to Wilkes County, where he became one of the counties largest land owners. Luther Wesley Alexander Charles David ANDERSON, son of Peter ANDERSON and Mary LYNN, was born in Manassas, Georgia on 15 Feb 1836. On 9 Jun 1857 he married Mary Ann DANIEL daughter of James Pierce and Elizabeth Glisson Daniel of Tattnall County. This union produced twelve children, all born in Manassas, Georgia. He enlisted for the duration of the war on 18 July 1862. On 20 Jan 1863, the 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment was formed, and Walthour’s Company became Company G or Troop G ,of the Regiment, which was known as the Liberty Independent Troop. He served the entire war in this unit and was paroled at Hillsboro N. C. on 3 May 1865. After the war, he went back to Tattnall County and engaged in farming. In later life, he became a devoted member of the Anderson Primitive Baptist Church in Tattnall that was formed by his father. His diary recounts his thoughts and convictions during the Battle of Atlanta, while serving with the 5th Regiment. The letter attached reflects most vividly his thoughts about his service, and his future spiritual life. His brother in law, Private Redden Yeomans, Jr. served in Troop D of the 5th Cavalry. Charles died February 24th 1918; his wife died February 24th 1902. They are interred in the Anderson Church Cemetery in Tattnall County. [OUTTC FAM REC - MIL REC] Clifford W. ANDERSON, brother of General R. H. Anderson, enlisted in 1864, in Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry. He remained in camp one day before being promoted to Acting A. D. C for Brigadier General R. H. Anderson. He severed as a courier on the staff of the 5th Georgia Cavalry until the surrender. Clifford W. Anderson was one of those selected to carry cartel of surrender between General Johnston and General Sherman in April 1865. [PEN-GSU] Alfred C. BACON enlisted 16 Jan 1863. Absent, sick in December 1864. William H. BACON enlisted in April 1863. He was a substitute for John Snyder. Listed as absent , sick in Dec 1864. William S. BAKER enlisted in the Liberty Independent troop on 17 May 1862. He was wounded in Florida on 20 Feb 1864, and at Peachtree Creek, Georgia, and 21 Jul 1864. He was paroled at Augusta, Georgia, on 5 Jun 1865. F. W. BALDORFF enlisted in Captain Winn’s Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Calvary on 1 Oct 1861. He was then appointed Company Commissary. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regi­ment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. Private Baldorff was wounded in arm at Saltville, Virginia, October 2, 1864. He was home on sick furlough in December 1864. J. E. BERRY enlisted 19 Apr 1864. He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, May 3, 1865. John Isaiah BIRD enlisted on 17 May 1862 in the Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion, Georgia Calvary. John Isaiah Bird was born on September 27, 1827 and died on August 28, 1869. Thomas Butler BLOUNT enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862. Thomas B. Blount transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Calvary on 20 Jan 1863. Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, May 3, 1865. Jonathan B. BREWTON enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on December 23, 1862. He then trans­ferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. Private Brewton was discharged by order of the Secretary of War, Special Orders No. 37, A. & I.O.G., Richmond, Virginia, 13 Feb 1864. T. S. BRADLEY entered service in July 1862, as a substitute for Private J. .S. WILSON of the Liberty Independent Troop. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment. Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. CALDWELL enlisted in Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry on March 12. 1864. Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro. North Carolina, on 3 May 1865. Raymond CAY enlisted on 26 Jan 1864. He escaped captured by Captain Hancock’s Company, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry, at his father’s home in Walthourville, Liberty County, Georgia, in December 1864. Records show he was home on furlough at close of war. O. D. CHESTER enlisted on 1 Jul 1864. Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, May 3., 1865. William W. CHISHOLM enlisted 12 Nov 1863. Private Chisholm was detailed with the Signal Service as telegraph operator, 12 Nov 1863. Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, 3 May 1865. Thomas Carolin CLAY, son of Thomas Savage Clay and Matilda Willis McAllister. Thomas Carolin Clay enlisted as a private in Captain Winn’s Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 30 June 1862, known as the Liberty Independent Troop. On 20 Dec 1862, he was detailed to the Signal Corps, and on 20 Jan 1863 he was transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. Private Clarence King was captured by the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry on 14 Dec 1864 at Walthourville, Liberty County, Georgia. McLeod KING enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862 He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He was discharged because of disability on 2 Jun 1863. EXPANDED SKETCH Proctor LAWRENCE enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 19 Oct 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He received a slight wound to the forehead near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He was captured near Jonesboro, Georgia, on 16 Nov 1864. He was paroled at Point Lookout, Maryland, and transferred to Cox's Landing, James River, Virginia, for exchange in February 1865. He was born in Beaufort County, South Carolina., and died in Atlanta, Georgia. [REC] [ITS-ODC-113] John Hand " Skip" LONG enlisted in Capt Walthour's Company of the First Georgia Cavalry at the age of 17 years in May 1862. Transferred to Company G of the 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment by Special Order No. 20 on 20 January 1863. He was placed on special duty at Brigade Headquarters on 31 Dec 1864 as personal courier for Brigadier General Robert Houstoun Anderson who nicknamed him "Skip"; his horse was named "Andrew Jackson". His fellow troopers have credited John H. Long with “extraordinary daring and unexcelled horsemanship.” Skip was temporarily promoted to Corporal and was wounded but not incapacitated at the Battle of Noon Day Church, Georgia. Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina on 3 May 1865. Robert W. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent Without Leave." Dr. Lucius Cornelius MATTOX, son of Elijah MATTOX, was born in Tattnall County, Georgia, 5 May 1829. He was educated at home and graduated from Eclectric Medical College of Macon, Georgia, on 9 Feb 1851. He practiced medicine in Clinch County, Georgia, and Madison County, Florida, before and after the Civil war. He married on 6 Apr 1854, to Miss Sarah A. SHINOLSER of Macon, Georgia, and they had 6 children. He enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862 Dr. Mattox transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Records show he lost two fingers at Saltville, Virginia, 2 Oct 1864. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Home on sick furlough." Dr. Lucius Cornelius Mattox is known as Clinch County’s first resident physician. He practiced medicine for 50 years. Michael returned home in 1865 on the same horse he enlisted with in 1862. The 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry captured Joe Quarterman 14 Dec 1864 at Walthourville, Liberty County, Georgia, with Lieutenant Willie Stevens’ Remount Detachment. He was released at Fort Delaware, Delaware, June 17. 1865. He walked home from Richmond, Virginia, after release. Robert Keith QUARTERMAN William J. QUARTERMAN enlisted in the Liberty Independent troop, on 17 May 1862 He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He married Ida Rosalie McCornell His daughter, Ida Henry Rokenbaugh, was born Christmas Day, 1864 in Thomasville, Georgia, while her mother was fleeing from Sherman's Army. Ida died in 1865. Imogene Hancock John Thurston ROWLAND, Jr. enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862 He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. John Thurston Rowland, Jr. was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina. Henry RUSSELL James Newton RUSSELL, son of Edward William RUSSELL, was born in Walthourville, Georgia, on 10 Oct 1830. On 10 Jan 1854, he married Mary H. EVE. On 17 Nov 1874, he married Anna H. CURTIS. He enlisted in Company B, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 13 May 1862. He transferred to Company E and then to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 1 Aug 1863. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent Without Leave since November 27th." James Newton died at Seabreeze, Florida, on 11 Jun 1916. Henry A. RUSSELL enlisted on 20 Feb 1864. He was wounded in the head at the Battle of Aiken, South Carolina. He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865. [REC] [ITS-ODC-113] Henry Porter STEVENS enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 22 Oct 1861. He was accidentally wounded at Marietta, Georgia, in 1864. He was captured at Walthourville, Georgia. 14 Dec 1864. Private Stevens was released at Point Lookout, Maryland, on 19 Jun 1865. William Crawford STEVENS enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 1 Oct 1861. He was captured at Walthourville, Georgia, on December 15, 1864. He was released at Point Lookout, Maryland, on June 19, 1865. John STRIPLING enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 5 Jan 1863. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He was wounded at Newnan, Georgia, 28 Jul 1864. He was absent from the company, wounded, on 31 Dec 1864. Later reported to Colonel Clinch’ Cavalry, where he remained until ordered to Macon, Georgia. He was at his home in Limestone Springs, Alabama, wounded, at the end of the war. Josiah Peyton Randolph SYKES was born on 16 Jul 1827 near Reidsville in Tattnall County, Georgia. He was the oldest son of Dr. Daniel Sikes and Elizabeth Eason Sikes. Active in community life, J. P. R. served at various times as Tattnall County Tax Collector, Census Taker, and Probate Judge. He married Miss Victoria E. Fletcher on 20 Dec 1860, a daughter of Senator Charles J. Fletcher and Frances Hodges Fletcher. J. P. R. enlisted in the 5th Georgia Cavalry, Company G and served until February 1864 when he was honorably discharged to take up duties as Tattnall County's Probate Judge. He died on 30 Nov 1910 and is buried at Mt. Carmel Church in Tattnall County. He attended and graduated (1860) from Franklin College at Athens, Georgia. He enlisted in Captain Winn's Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He was appointed assistant quartermaster. Edward J. Thomas was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina in 1865. On 2 Apr 1862 he married Alice Gertrude Walthour, daughter of George Washington Walthour and Mary Amelia Ann Russell. After the war, he resided in Savannah where he worked in railroads. Floyd WILLIAMS enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on September 2, 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. Pension records show that he was sent home on 30 days furlough on account of fever in November 1864. His furlough was extended 60 days. He was unable to rejoin his command before it surrendered. He died in Tattnall County, Georgia, in 1920. Francis William WILLIS enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 20 Jun 1862. He was detailed in Signal Corps December 20, 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Georgia cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, May 3, 1865. Walter A. WILLIS William Maxwell WINN escaped capture when Lieutenant Stevens' detail was captured 14 Dec 1864. Lt. Stevens and several troops from Company G were captured at the CAY house, Walthourville, Georgia, on 14 Dec 1864, by the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Y. H. Wynn ____ Yonkers Redden YEOMANS, Jr., son of Redden YEOMANS and Lucy JARRIEL, was born 26 Mar 1829. He enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 19 July 1862. Redden transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. Roll from 30 Jun to 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent Without Leave since October." No later record. He married Elizabeth DANIEL, daughter of James P. DANIEL and Elizabeth GLISSON. The Redden Yeomans family lived in Tattnall County, Georgia, near where Pine Grove Church is located today.
