MARTIN was appointed 8 Oct 1861, for a term of six months. He enlisted 25 Apr 1862 in Captain Hughes’s Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. He furnished William J. COLEMAN as a substitute 1 Dec 1862. [MIL REC] 2nd Lieutenant John E. ZOUCKS, is listed in the 1860 Census in District 15 of Liberty County. He transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Lieutenant ZOUCKS was captured near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in September 1864. Released at Johnson's Island, Ohio, in 1865. [MIL REC] 3rd Lieutenant Seaborn B. RUSTIN, is listed in the 17th District, 1860 Liberty County Census. 1st Sergeant William J. DALEY enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 25 Apr 1862, and was then elected 2nd Lieutenant 25 Apr 1862. He transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He was captured near Savannah, Georgia, 16 Nov 1864. 2nd Lieutenant DALEY was released at Fort Delaware, Delaware, 17 Jun 1865. [MIL REC] Sergeant J. R. DEAN Sergeant Francis J. DELK 2nd Sergeant John A. MARTIN, son of William H. MARTIN, enlisted in Captain Hughes's Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 25 April 1862. Transferred to Company D, 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment on 20 January 1863. Served in all campaigns of the war with the 5th Cavalry. Was paroled at Hillsboro North Carolina on 26 April 1865. He Married Georgia Loanz Whitten 16 December 1860, daughter of Joseph and Ann (Warnell) Whitten. They had 7 children: 1. Loanza Jedadiah Martin, 2. William Joseph Martin, 3. David Jackson Martin, 4. Daniel Martin, 5. Clara Lolee Martin, 6. Rubin Martin, 7. Sarah Frasier Martin (Mims). He died in Liberty County in 1904, and is buried in Taylor Creek Cemetery. Mims] 3rd Sergeant Joseph Thomas GRICE, son of William GRICE and Evylina SMART, was born in Tattnall County, Georgia in 1836. He enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. J. T. GRICE transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863, as 3rd Sergeant. He was captured near Woodbury, Tennessee, 6 Sep 1864. He was released at Camp Chase, Ohio, 11 Jun 1865. He married Elmira Darsey, who was related to the Darsey boys that served in Troop D of the 5th Georgia Cavalry. [COLSON – MIL REC] 4th Sergeant John C. McQUAIG enlisted 8 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment on 20 Jan 1863. Died at Savannah, Georgia, 19 Apr1863. [MIL REC] 1st Corporal W. A. BAGGS 2nd Corporal Samuel Henry ZOUCKS enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company on 25 Apr 1862. He was captured at Woodbury, Tennessee, 6 Sep 1864. BAKER enlisted as private in Captain Hughes' Company, Georgia Cavalry, 25 Apr 1862. He transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Private Baker was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, 26 Apr 1865. [MIL REC] Benjamin E. BARFIELD Benjamin B. BARGERON, was born in Burke County, Georgia, 12 Apr 1823. The 1850 Census of Burke County, Georgia, lists a "Benjamin Barjeron", age 25, in the household of Matthew Griffin in the 68th District of Burke County. He enlisted in Captain Hughes’ Company, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry 31 Dec 1861. Private BARGERON mustered out 8 Apr 1862, and reenlisted in Company H, 61st Regiment, Georgia Infantry, on 9 May 1862. He was wounded in thumb, resulting in amputation, at Wilderness, Virginia. May 1864. Private BARGERON was captured at Winchester, Virginia, 19 Sep 1864. paroled at Point Lookout, Maryland, and transferred to Aiken's Landing, Virginia, for exchange on 18 Mar 1865. Private BARGERON was received Boulware's Wharf, James River, Virginia, 18 Mar 1865. [MIL REC - HEN - Family File Ancestry.com] "Captain" Israel L. BIRD was born June 1, 1839 in Taylors Creek Georgia the second son of James Robinson and Mary (Daniel) Bird. Israel L. married Sarah Lou Johnson (1849-1910). His father Captain James Bird was the first commander of the Liberty Guards formed at Taylors Creek Just before the war. He was unable to serve in the war due to debility and old age. Israel enlisted in the Confederate Army as a Private in Capt. Hughes' Company of the 1st Georgia Cavalry Battalion on 25 April 1862. He transferred to Company D of the 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment on 20 Jan 1863. The roll of 31 Dec 1864 shows he was "absent in Liberty County since 1 Sep. He was always known as "Captain Bird" even though he did not serve as a Captain in the war. After the war, Israel L. was responsible for the reorganization of the Liberty County Militia, "The Constitution Guards" in the late 1870's. He was selected as Captain and Commander, serving in the unit until about 1900. He died in 1905 and is buried in the Taylors Creek Cemetery, in Liberty County Georgia. [REC - HOUSTON] Zenas L. BOGGS James M. CASWELL enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 25 Apr 1862. He transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Appointed 1st Sergeant in 1864. Roll dated 32 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Present". [MIL REC] William J. COLEMAN enlisted in Captain Hughes’ Company, Georgia Cavalry, 25 Apr 1862. DARSEY was captured near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in September 1864. He was released at Camp Chase, Ohio, in June 1865. Died in 1911 in Bulloch County, Ga. [MIL REC] J. M. DARSEY T. V. DARSEY Thomas Virgil DASHER, son of Thomas DASHER and Sarah Rebecca ZITTRAUER, was born 23 Dec 1831, and died 27 Dec 1908. He enlisted in Captain Hughes Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 25 Apr 1862. He transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Records show he served as a Teamster with wagon train. Private Dasher was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, 26 Apr 1865. Thomas married Eveline SMITH on 25 Feb 1852. [MIL REC] Barney G. DEAN enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 25 Apr 1862. Transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, 26 Apr 1865. [MIL REC] William Shelton DELK was born in Liberty County Georgia 12 Jun 1846, and died in Tattnall County, Georgia 10 Mar 1925. He enlisted 26 Mar 1864, in Company D, 5th Georgia Cavalry. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him present. Pension records show he was on 30 days furlough to procure a remount when war ended. [MIL REC] Leander Joel DUKES enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, in August 1862. He was transferred to Company F, 5th Regiment Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He was wounded in left hand at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, 4 Sep 1864. Sent to hospital at Bristol, Tennessee, 23 Sep 1864. Furloughed home for 60 days 27 Sep 1864. Fur­lough extended by Captain Hughes in November 1864. Absent, wounded, Tattnall County, Georgia, on surgeon's leave, 31 Dec 1864. [MIL REC] Warren GARDNER enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 25 Apr 1862. He transferred to Company D, 5th Georgia, Cavalry Regiment, 20 Jan 1863. He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, 26 Apr 1865. [MIL REC] Winfield Wickliffe GEIGER, son of David G. GEIGER and wife Martha SLATER, was born Oct. 28, 1837 in Bryan County, GA. He enlisted in Company D and served as a Quartermaster in the Georgia 5th Cavalry, Anderson's Brigade, Kelly's Division, Wheeler's Cavalry Corp, Army of Tennessee. He married Sarah Ann EDWARDS, daughter of Daniel Huger EDWARDS and Elizabeth Jane ARCHER, on 2 May 1857. To this union were born nine children. Sarah Ann died 27 May 1872, soon after the birth of her ninth child. On 3 Jul 1872, Winfield married Sarah Ann's sister, Dorcas Elvina EDWARDS. To this union were born three children. Dorcas died 10 Sep 1879, soon after the birth of her third child. On 20 Nov 1879, Winfield married Ann Jane Underwood SMITH, a cousin of his two previous wives. To this union were born six children, and Ann Jane, having previously been married to Alexander SMITH, brought at least four Smith children into the household. She outlived Winfield, who died 12 May 1902. He was a farmer raising hogs, cows, horses, chickens, and vegetables, and he served in the Georgia House of Representatives for Bryan County. He also served as Ordinary of Bryan County. [FAM REC NANCY GEIGER FORD] James E. GRICE, son of William GRICE and Evylina SMART, was born in Tattnall County, Georgia in 1840. He enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 15 Apr1862. Private GRICE transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He served throughout the war and was never absent and was never in the hospital. He came out with the same horse he went in with. He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina on 26 Apr 1865. He died in 1924. James first married a Miss WATERS and later, a Miss LEWIS. [Robert Ellis Colson – MIL REC] A. J. HUGHES B. W. JONES Eben KICKLIGHTER, son of Jesse KICKLIGHTER and Luirsa THOMAS, was born in 1834 and died 17 Aug 1902. Fredrick KICKLIGHTER, son of Jesse KICKLIGHTER and Luirsa THOMAS, was born in 1840 and died in 1886. Henry KICKLIGHTER J. S. KICKLIGHTER Jacob KICKLIGHTER, son of Jesse KICKLIGHTER and Mary Ann Geiger, was born in 1844, and died in 1918. Jesse KICKLIGHTER, son of Jesse KICKLIGHTER and Luirsa THOMAS, was born in 1829 and died in 1881. Jesse was captured. W. M. KICKLIGHTER William KICKLIGHTER, son of Jesse KICKLIGHTER and Luirsa THOMAS, was born in 1843, and died in 1918. Angus M. LAING John LANIER John G. LANIER Louis S. LANIER Thomas F. LINDER enlisted in Captain Hughes Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 25 Apr 1862. He transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Private LINDER was captured at Woodbury, Tennessee, 6 Sep 1864. He died of variola while imprisoned at Camp Chase, Ohio, 6 Feb. 1865. Private LINDER is buried in the Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery, grave No. 1072. [MIL REC] Berry Daniel MARTIN enlisted 25 Apr 1862. Roll dated December 31, 1864, last on file, shows him in Liberty County, Georgia, on surgeon's certificate. [MIL REC] Martin Abraham MARTIN enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 8 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Private MARTIN was appointed bugler. Paroled Hillsboro, North Carolina 3 May 1865. He Married Mary F. McQuaig in Liberty County, Georgia, 16 Feb 1860. He died 16 Feb 1897, in Melbourne, Brevard County, Florida. [HOUSTON -MIL REC] Samuel Spencer MARTIN was born in Georgia in 1848, and died in Liberty County 26 Sep 1914. He enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 8 Oct 1861. Private MARTIN transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Private MOODY was captured at Big Shanty, Georgia, 20 Jun 1864. He died of effects of an ulcer at Camp Douglas, Illinois, 26 Oct 1864. [MIL REC] Farming A. MORGAN Elisha McDONALD John J. ODOM enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 25 May 1862. He was wounded 1 Aug 1862 and died of wounds Aug 1862. [MIL REC] Mark OLIVER enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion. Georgia Cavalry, 22 Sep 1862. He transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Mark Oliver is listed as deserted 8 Nov 1864. Records show he took oath of allegiance to U.S. Government at Washington, D.C., and was furnished transportation to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 17 NOV 1864. [MIL REC] David A. PERRY J. H. PINHOLSTER enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 25 Apr 1862. Transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Roll dated December 31, 1864, last on file, shows him "Present." [MIL REC] Francis Hampton PURCELL, son of JOHN R. PURCELL and STACEY SMART, was born 27 Oct 1829 in Tattnall County, Georgia, , and died October 04, 1908, in Tattnall County, Georgia.. Pension records indicate he enlisted in Captain Hughes Company (Liberty Guards), 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry, at Hinesville, Georgia. He was mustered into service on 27 Apr 1862 at South Newport in Liberty County. Transferred to Company D, 5th Georgia Cavalry by special order # 20 on 20 Jan 1863. Records for May and June 1863 show him as being on detached service by order of Lt. Col. E. Bird. He was paroled on May 3, 1865 at Hillsboro, N.C. He married JOSEPHINE SUSAN WARNELL February 28, 1854 in Liberty County, Georgia. Francis and Josephine married at the home of her parents, Asa and Laurana Smart Warnell of Liberty County, Georgia. She was born July 19, 1828, and died April 23, 1915, in Tattnall County, Georgia. Francis Hampton and Josephine Susan Warnell are buried at Sand Hill Cemetery, Ft. Stewart Reservation, Tattnall County, Georgia. [FAM - MIL REC] James J. ROGERS enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 14 Aug 1862. He transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Listed as Absent Without Leave in Tattnall County, Georgia, since 1 Dec 1864. [MIL REC] John Geiger RYON, son of Richard and Elizabeth Ryon was born 6 July 1843 in Nassau County Florida. He married Eliza Jane Hendry at Taylors Creek Georgia, 28 November 1866. They had fourteen children, all born at Taylors creek. He and his wife are buried in Taylors Creek Cemetery. John G. Ryon enlisted as a private in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry 20 January 1863. The same day the company was re-designated Company D, 5th Georgia Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, also known as the Liberty Guards. He was captured at Bear Creek Station in North Georgia 15 November 1864, and spent the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp. He was released from Point Lookout Maryland Prison on 17 June 1865. Shown in the attached photo with their sisters is his older brother William Henry Ryon (Seated). Henry was not in the 5th Cavalry but was enlisted as a private in Company E, 25th Georgia Infantry, Liberty Volunteers. He was subsequently elected 4th Corporal, then Sergeant. His pension records show that he was wounded in the foot at Pine Mountain Georgia in June 1864, then had part of his foot amputated at the Barnesville, Ga. CSA Hospital. He returned to Liberty County where he died in 1900 and is buried in Taylors Creek Cemetery. [HOUSTON -PHOTO COURTESY OF WYMAN MAY CO-AUTHOR OF TAYLORS CREEK -MIL REC] Benjamin W. RUSTIN John P. RUSTIN enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 25 Apr 1862. Transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Listed as died in a Macon, Georgia, hospital 20 Jun 1864. He is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery at Macon, Georgia. [MIL REC] William SMART, son of Joseph Amassey SMART, Sr. and Lourainia MOORE, was born in Tattnall County, Georgia in 1840. He married Maryan E. Sands and they had one small child prior to his enlistment to serve in the Confederate army. He enlisted on 25 Apr 1862 at South Newport, Georgia in Captain William Hughes' Company of the 1st Battalion, Georgia Volunteer Cavalry. This was an independent cavalry company known as the "Liberty Mounted Guards." He furnished his own horse that was valued at $200, and his horse equipment was valued at $18. He served with this unit through December of 1862. Private SMART transferred to Troop D of the 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. In October of 1863 he was given a clothing allowance of $34.13. On 27 Oct 1863 he is listed in General Hospital No. 1 in Savannah suffering from battle wounds. An epidemic of Typhoid Fever broke out in the hospital killing more soldiers than by their wounds. William's family went to Savannah and brought him home to Tattnall County, where his mother and sisters attended him. He died from fever on 5 Nov 1863, and was buried in Sandsfield Church Cemetery. His widow, Maryan, married Martin W. SMITH after the war. [FAM REC – COLSTON] James Smart, son of Joseph Amassey SMART, SR. and Lourainia MOORE, was born in Tattnall County, Georgia in 1842. He enlisted on 25 Dec 1861 at the age of 19 . He was paid $4.40 for "the risk and hire" of his own horse. He reenlisted with his brother, William, on 25 Apr 1862 at South Newport, Georgia. Upon his second enlistment his horse was valued at $175, and horse equipment at $23. In Aug 1862 he was listed as "absent sick", but was back on duty with the November report. In Jan 1863 his unit became Troop D of the 5th Georgia Cavalry. In October of 1863 he was paid a one time clothing allowance of $34.13. In April of 1864 he was sick in General Hospital in Lake City, Florida. On 16 May 1864 at the age of 21 he was killed in action in the north Georgia campaign. He was brought home by his father and buried in Sandsfield Church Cemetery in what is now Evans County. [FAM REC – COLSTON] John A. SMILEY enlisted 16 July 1862, enlisted in Captain Hughes’ Company. William Frances Marion "Rev. Billy T." SMITH was born in Tattnall County, Georgia in 1840, the son of John W. SMITH. He enlisted as private on 8 October 1861 in the "Liberty Guards" of the 1st Georgia Cavalry Battalion. His obligation was for six months, and Captain Hughes swore him in. He was first stationed at South Newport, Georgia, later removing to Camp Hughes near Darien, Georgia. On 8 April 1861, his enlistment was up and he went home to Bryan County, Georgia. On 25 April 1862, he re-enlisted in The Liberty Guards, Company D, 1st Battalion, Georgia Volunteer Cavalry for three (3) years or end of war. He transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent Without Leave in Tattnall County, Georgia, from 1 Dec 1864. After the war, he answered the call to preach, and severed many Baptist Churches in Bryan, Tattnall, Chatham, and Bulloch Counties. He died on 2 November 1922, and is buried at Antioch Church Cemetery in Evans County, Georgia. [MIL REC – FAM REC - SMITH] Hamp SMITH enlisted in Captain Hughes’ Company. George W. Records indicate he was home with typhoid fever from 15 Feb 1865, to close of war. [MIL REC - HOUSTON] James H. STUBBS enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 25 Apr 1862. he transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, January 20. 1863. Roll for 31 Dec 1864,last on file, shows him Absent Without Leave in Liberty County, Georgia, since 1 Dec 1864. [MIL REC] William SWINDLE enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 25 Apr 1862. Transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Caval­ry, 20 Jan 1863. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file shows him present. [MIL REC] Joseph S.D. THORPE was enlisted in Captain Hughes' Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 25 Apr 1862. Transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Roll dated December 31, 1864, last on file, shows him being cut off from his command and “Doing duty with Col. Hood in Liberty County, Georgia”. [MIL REC] Samuel J. THROPE William T. THROPE Edward F. WILLIAMS enlisted 6 Oct 1861. Mustered out 8 Apr 1862. Reenlisted 25 Apr 1862. He transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, in 20 Jan 1863. He was captured near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, 6 Sep 1864.
