Walthour "Liberty Independent Troop" - Company G "Liberty Independent Troop" Liberty County, Georgia Captain Winn's Company, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry Captain Walthour's Company, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry Captain L. W. Walthour, Commanding This company was known as Captain Winn's Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, when it enlisted for six months on 1 Oct 1861. The company was reenlisted for six months on 17 May 1862 by Captain Walthour. By consolidation it became Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. The company was known as Captain Walthour's Company from 17 May 1862. OFFICERS AND STAFF Captain Abiel WINN – He was elected Captain 1 October 1861. Roll for January - February 1862 shows him "Present”. Served for six months as Company Commander of Liberty Independent Troop of Liberty County Georgia. The company was in the 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Lt. Colonel Charles SPALDING, Commanding. Captain WINN served in the unit from boyhood through the first 6-months of the Civil War successively, as sergeant, coronet, and lieutenant. He assumed command as elected captain from 1842-1845, and from 1859-1861. For the first few months of the war he continued to serve as the Captain Oct 1861 - March 1862. The unit was mustered out of service on 1 April 1862, but was reconstituted for further service. The Company was initially camped at Hector’s Bluff on Isle of Wight, near Dorchester Georgia and remained on coastal picket duty while encamped at Palmyra, on the Liberty County Coast. There was a disagreement over how the unit was to be reconstituted and considerable dissension existed in the ranks. Captain WINN resigned command because he was too crippled with rheumatism to continue as the commander of a mounted cavalry troop. The 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry captured Captain WINN along with a Liberty Troop Remount Detachment at the CAY house, Walthourville, Georgia, 14 December 1864. He was released when it was realized the old gentleman was a civilian. Captain William Lowndes WALTHOUR was elected 1st Lieutenant of Captain Winn’s Company, Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 1 Oct 1861. He was then elected Captain of Company G, 5th Regiment. Georgia Cavalry when the company was transferred to the 5th Georgia cavalry. Captain Walthour was slightly wounded in neck near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in August 1864. Roll dated December 31. 1864, last on file, shows him "Detached” November 7, 1864, to acting inspector general on staff of Brig. Gen. R. A. Anderson. William Augustus FLEMING was elected 1st Lieutenant, Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry, 1 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. Left sick at Columbia, Tennessee, and captured there September 4, 1864. He was sent to a Union Army Military Prison at Louisville. Kentucky, and transferred to Johnson's Island, Ohio, 6 Oct 1864. Captain Fleming was released on 16 Jun 1865. George T. HENDLEY was elected 2nd Lieutenant 1 Oct 1861, of the Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry. Elected 1st Lieutenant. Transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. Wounded at Fayetteville, North Carolina, 13 Mar 1865. William M. STEVENS was appointed Sergeant 1 Oct 1861, and then elected 2nd Lieutenant in 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. The 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry captured Lt. Willie Stevens while commanding a remount detachment at the Cay house, Walthourville, Georgia, on 14 Dec1864. He was released at Fort Delaware, Delaware, 17 Jun 1865. Lt. STEVENS walked home from Richmond, Virginia, after his release. Samuel Law FLEMING was appointed 1st Sergeant Liberty Independent Troop, Captain Winn’s Company, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry on 9 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent Without Leave”. Edward W. RUSSELL (Ted RUSSELL) was appointed 2nd Sergeant, Liberty independent Troop, and 1st Georgia Battalion Cavalry 22 Oct 1861. He Transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment Georgia Cavalry. Ted RUSSELL was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, in 1865. G. Frederick KING was appointed 3rd Sergeant of Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He surrendered at Hillsboro, North Carolina. Russell WALTHOUR was appointed 4th Sergeant of Captain Winn’s Liberty Independent Troop, 1st battalion Georgia cavalry on 1 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Served as Color bearer in 1864. He Saved the Regimental colors and himself by giving the colors to a mounted member of the color guard and then playing dead as union troops passed over him at the Battle of Bear Creek Station, Georgia, 16 Nov 1864. Josiah L. FLEMING enlisted and appointed 1st Corporal on 1 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. He was wounded in ear near Savannah, Georgia, in December 1864. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent Without Leave since November 26th”. Surrendered at Tallahassee, Florida, 10 May 1865. He was paroled at Thomasville, Georgia, 21 May 1865. John David CAY enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop and was appointed the 3rd Corporal of Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry. Captured with a Liberty Troop Remount Detachment by Captain Hancock’s Company, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry, at his father’s home in Walthourville, Liberty County, Georgia. He was released at Point Lookout, Maryland, 26 Jun 1865. Edward FENNELL enlisted and was appointed 4th Corporal in Company G, 5th Georgia cavalry. He was wounded in action at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, and was home on wounded furlough at close of the war. Fleming LAW enlisted and was appointed 5th Corporal of Liberty Independent troop on 17 May 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He surrendered at Hillsboro, North Carolina, in 1865. James Oglethorpe VARNEDOE enlisted and was appointed corporal, Liberty Independent Troop, 1st battalion Georgia Cavalry. He Transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry 20 Jan 1863. He was listed as Absent Without Leave from 1 Dec 1864. He returned to duty from 30 days furlough near the close of the war. PRIVATES Charles A. ALEXANDER was born in Washington, Wilkes County, Georgia, 4 Nov 1838, and died at Washington, Wilkes County, Georgia 30 Jan 1907. He enlisted in Captain Winn’s Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion Georgia cavalry on 1 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Elected 2nd Lieutenant and transferred to Capt. J. W. McAlpin's Company, Engineer Troops, Company. E. 2nd Regiment, Confederate Engineer Troops in 1864. Appointed 1st Lieutenant 8 Mar 1865 to rank from 27 Oct 1864. He was paroled at Chester, South Carolina 5 May 1865. He was a planter and was living at Hopewell, his father’s plantation, in Liberty County for several years before the Civil War. He married (1) Ida CALHOUN, daughter of Edward CALHOUN and Francis MIDDLETON, 8 Apr 1862. He married (2) Rosa CALHOUN, daughter of Edward CALHOUN and Francis MIDDLETON, on 4 Nov 1880. After the war he returned to Liberty County, but eventually returned to Wilkes County, where he became one of the largest land owners in the area. [FAM REC – MIL REC] Luther Wesley ALEXANDER enlisted in Company G, date unknown. Charles David ANDERSON Charles David ANDERSON, son of Peter ANDERSON and Mary LYNN, was born in Manassas, Georgia, on 15 Feb 1836. On 9 Jun 1857 he married Mary Ann DANIEL daughter of James Pierce DANIEL and Elizabeth GLISSON of Tattnall County. He enlisted in Captain William L. Walthour’s Company of the 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion on 18 July 1862. At that time the company was camped at Palmyra on the Liberty County Coast. On 20 Jan 1863, the 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment was formed, and Walthour’s Company became Company G or Troop G ,of the Regiment, which was known as the Liberty Independent Troop. He served the entire war in this unit and was paroled at Hillsboro N. C. on May 3, 1865. After the war, he went back to Tattnall County and engaged in farming. In later life, he became a devoted member of the Anderson Primitive Baptist Church in Tattnall that was formed by his father. His brother-in-law, Private Redden Yeomans, Jr. served in Troop D of the 5th Cavalry. [MIL REC - FAM] S. J. ANDREWS William Elliott ARNOLD enlisted on 17 May 1862 in the Liberty Independent troop. He transferred to Hardwick Mounted Rifles June 1, 1862; to Company K, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 1 Jun 1863. Captured at Fort McAllister, Georgia in 1865. Ordered to report to his brother, Samuel G. Arnold, in Rhode Island. He was born in Georgia about 1839. Alfred C. BACON enlisted on on 16 Jan 1863. Joseph Madison BACON enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop from Oct 1861 – May 1862. In May 1862, he enlisted in Company B, 20th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. He died of measles at James Island, South Carolina, on 24 Aug 1862 and is buried in the Midway Cemetery. John Elijah BAKER enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop, for six months, October 1861 – May 1862. In May 1862 he enlisted as 1st Sergeant in the Liberty Mounted rangers (Company B, 20th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry). John Elijah was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on November 6, 1862. William S. BAKER enlisted in the Liberty Independent troop on 17 May 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He was wounded in Florida on 20 Feb 1864, and at Peachtree Creek, Georgia, and 21 Jul 1864. He was paroled at Augusta, Georgia, on 5 Jun 1865. F. W. BALDORFF enlisted in Captain Winn’s Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Calvary on 1 Oct 1861. He was then appointed Company Commissary. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regi­ment, Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. Private Baldorff was wounded in arm at Saltville, Virginia, 2 Oct 1864. He was home on sick furlough in December 1864. Solomon Shad BARNARD enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop, Oct 1861. He was born 19 Feb 1821, at Wilmington, Chatham County, Georgia, and died in Walthourville, Liberty County, Georgia, on 16 Apr 1901. J. E. BERRY enlisted in Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry on April 19, 1864. He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, 3 May 1865. Thomas C. BILLUPS enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862. HE was Accidentally killed in a train accident on 22 Sep 1862. John Isaiah BIRD enlisted on 17 May 1862 in the Liberty Independent Troop, 1st Battalion, Georgia Calvary. Private Bird transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Calvary on 20 Jan 1863. He surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina on April 26, 1865. John Isaiah Bird was born on 27 Sep 1827 and died on 28 Aug 1869. Thomas Butler BLOUNT enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862. Thomas B. Blount transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Calvary on 20 Jan 1863. Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro. North Carolina, 3 May 1865. T. S. BRADLEY enlisted in July 1862, as a substitute for Private J. .S. Wilson of the Liberty Independent Troop. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment. Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He is listed on detail duty 31 Dec 1864. Paroled at Albany, Georgia, 6 May 1865. Jonathan B. BREWTON enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on December 23, 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. Private Brewton was discharged by order of the Secretary of War, Special Orders No. 37, A. & I.O.G., Richmond, Virginia, February 13, 1864. J. P. H. BROWN enlisted on 30 June 1862, in the Liberty Independent Troop. John Wallace BRUMBY enlisted in the Liberty Independent troop on 27 Nov 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Elected Captain of Company D, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 26 Sep 1863. He later transferred to Company I, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. Company Roll dated 27 Feb 1865, shows him "Absent”, by authority of Lt. Gen. Ewell since November 1, 1864." James P. BURROUGHS enlisted on 17 May 1862, in the Liberty Independent Troop. He transferred to Company G, 8th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He was paroled at Tallahassee, Florida, 15 May 1865. Joseph B. CALDWELL enlisted in Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry 15 Apr 1864. Private CALDWELL was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865. Robert H. CALDWELL enlisted in Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 12 Mar 1864. Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865. Raymond CAY enlisted in Company G, on 26 Jan 1864. He was almost captured by Captain Hancock’s Company, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry, at his father’s home in Walthourville, Liberty County, Georgia, in December 1864. Records show he was home on furlough at close of war. Thomas Carolin CLAY was the second son of Thomas Savage Clay (1801-1849) and Matilda Willis McAllister Clay (1818-1869) of “Richmond,” Bryan County, Georgia. The Clays were successful rice planters on the Ogeechee River and Thomas Carolin Clay was brought up in a family that valued education and religion. Thomas Savage Clay was the son of Joseph Clay, Jr., a well-respected jurist and later a Baptist minister. T. S. Clay was educated at Harvard College and later helped organize the Bryan Neck Presbyterian Church near his plantatiin Bryan County. Matilda Willis McAllister Clay was a daughter of a neighboring planter, George Washington McAllister (1781-1850), and Mary Bowman McAllister. Her brother, Joseph Longworth McAllister (1820-1864), had Fort McAllister built on his lands at the mouth of the Ogeechee River and served as Lt. Colonel of the Hardwick Rifles, later part of the 7th Regiment of Georgia Cavalry. McAllister was killed in action against troops commanded by Gen. George A. Custer at Trevilian’s Station, Virginia, on 11 Jun 1864. Thomas Carolin Clay was educated at “Richmond” by private tutors and then followed his older brother to the Hopkins Grammar School in New Haven, Connecticut from 1855 to 1857, and studied classics under the Rev. Henry Martyn Coltin Middletown, Connecticut. Thereafter, he entered Yale College as a freshman in the Class of 1864 and joined the Linonian Society. Georgia seceded from the Union on 19 Jan 1861, and Thomas Carolin Clay left for Savannah on 4 Feb 1861. He never returned to Yale to finish his studies. Although his older brother and aunt disapproved of the war, Thomas Carolin Clay enlisted in Captain Winn’s Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 30 Jun 1862, known as the Liberty Independent Troop. On 20 Dec 1862, he was detailed to the Signal Corps, and on 20 Jan 1863 he was transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. He was paroled with the Signal Corps at Albany, Georgia on 6 May 1865. Thomas Carolin Clay had his own Sharps rifle, which was finely engraved and fitted with target sights, and a standard issue pine army trunk for his belongings as part of his accoutrements. Near the height of the war in coastal Georgia on 1 Nov 1864, Thomas Carolin Clay married Caroline Matilda Law (1842-1909). She was the daughter of Judge William Law (1793-1874), an ardent Secessionist, and his second wife, Alethea Jones Stark Law (1810-1872). Ft. McAllister fell in December, 1864 and “Richmond” was burned, forcing the family to flee to south Georgia. After the war, Thomas Carolin Clay and his family lived in Savannah, Georgia until 1878. Thereafter, he planted rice at “Richmond” until 1887, when he returned to Savannah to live for the rest of his life. A., Tattnall County, "Tattnall Invincibles" on 4 Mar 1862. He transferred to Company G, 47th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, on 12 May 1862. He then transferred to Captain Abial Winn's Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on 12 Aug 1862. He transferred with most of his company to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. His pension records show he was on detail at the close of the war. John H. CLIFTON enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 6 Sep 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865. Thomas CLIFTON enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862. Transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent Without Leave since Nov 26th”. John COBB enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 30 June 1862. Transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Records show him listed as deserted on 19 Jul 1864. Wesley COBB enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Private Wesley Cobb was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865. B.F. DYE enlisted on 17 May 1862, in Captain Winn’s Company 1st battalion, Georgia Cavalry. He transferred with most of his company to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Records show he was on detail with Hood's Supply Train 31 Dec 1864. He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, 3 May 1865. Samuel EARLE enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on on 14 May 1862. Discharged to accept appointment as clerk in Treasury Department 29 Dec 1862. John N. FENNELL, son of John W. A. FENNELL, was born 26 Sep 1826, in South Carolina. He married Mary Elizabeth GIRARDEAU on 13 Apr 1848. He served briefly in the Liberty Guards, and on 17 May 1862 he enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop. He reenlisted on on 1 Nov 1863, in Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry. He was accidentally wounded at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, on 19 Jun 1864. He was a one-time sheriff of Liberty County, farmer, and plantation overseer; He managed the Montevideo plantation for some years before removing to Savannah. He died on December 14, 1881 in Savannah, Georgia. James Wilson FLEMING enlisted in the Liberty Independent troop on on 17 May 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He was paroled at Thomasville, Georgia, 23 May 1865. John Sidney FLEMING enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862. Appears to have transferred to Company G, 5th Georgia cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. Records show he transferred from Flemstone Hospital, Barnesville, Georgia, to General Hospital at Macon, Georgia, September 23, 1864. He was paroled at Thomasville. Georgia. May 21, 1865. Thomas Madison FLEMING enlisted in the Liberty Independent troop in November 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Roll dated December 31. 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent on special duty, drummer, headquarters." Thomas Quarterman FLEMING enlisted in Captain Winn's Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, 1 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, as member of color guard 20 Jan 1863. He was placed on special duty at brigade headquarters from 30 Jun - 31 Dec 1864. He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865. Elias C. FORT enlisted in the Liberty Independent troop on 1 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. Private Hill was paroled at Albany, Georgia, 6 May 1864. George Washington HORTON enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862. George Washington JONES enlisted in Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry. Private Jones Intentionally wounded himself in the hand. Dr. Joseph Jones, Physician, and Medical Educator, younger son of Rev. Dr. Charles Colcock JONES and Mary JONES. Joseph was born in Walthourville, Liberty County Georgia 6 Sept 1833. He enlisted on, in Oct 1861, in Captain Walthour’s Company, Liberty Independent Troop, and served six months until March 1862, acting as Post Surgeon at Camp Dorchester where the troop was encamped on coastal picket duty. On 20 Dec 1862, he was appointed Surgeon, in the Confederate Army with the rank of Major, and served the remainder of the war. During his tenure as Surgeon he conducted medical research in the Confederate Army under the direction of Surgeon General Samuel Preston Moore. After the war where he served on the faculties of Savannah Medical College, Savannah, Georgia, the University of Georgia at Athens, Georgia, and the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta, Georgia. Malachi JOHNS enlisted in The Liberty Independent Troop on, on 17 May 1862. Transferred to Company D, 5th Georgia cavalry. Records show him on special duty at brigade headquarters on December 31, 1864. Private Malachi JOHNS surrendered at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865. James A. M. KING enlisted in Captain Winn's Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. He was discharged after furnishing a substitute. He later enlisted in the 29th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. He was discharged because of disability on June 2, 1863. Roswell KING enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on on November 18, 1861. William John KING enlisted in The Liberty Independent Troop for six months on 1 Oct 1861. In December 1863 he enlisted in 29th Regiment, Georgia cavalry. He was taken prisoner at Dorchester, Liberty County, on December 14, 1865. He was imprisoned at Point Lookout, Maryland, until the end of the war. William John King was born in McIntosh County, on February 7, 1823, and died at Dorchester, Liberty County, on June 15, 1885. James T. LAMBRIGHT enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop in May 1862, at Palmyra, near Sunbury, Liberty County, Georgia. James T. Lambright transferred to Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. Surrendered at Company Shops, North Carolina, on 26 Apr 1865. Proctor LAWRENCE enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 19 Oct 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He received a slight wound to the forehead near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He was captured near Jonesboro, Georgia, on November 16, 1864. He was paroled at Point Lookout, Maryland, and transferred to Cox's Landing, James River, Virginia, for exchange in February 1865. He was born in Beaufort County, South Carolina, and died in Atlanta, Georgia. [REC] [ITS-ODC-113] John Hand LONG enlisted in Capt Walthour's Company of the 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on at the age of 17 years in May 1862. Transferred to Company G of the 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment by Special Order No. 20 on 20 Jan 1863. He was placed on special duty at Brigade Headquarters on 31 Dec 1864 as personal courier for Brigadier General Robert Houstoun Anderson who nicknamed him "Skip"; his horse was named "Andrew Jackson". His fellow troopers with credited John H. Long with “extraordinary daring and unexcelled horsemanship.” Skip was temporarily promoted to Corporal and was wounded but not incapacitated at the Battle of Noon Day Church, Georgia. Records show he was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina on 3 May 1865. Robert W. LONG enlisted on on 17 May 1862. He was a substitute for Norman Gignalliat. He then transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent Without Leave." Lucius Cornelius Mattox – He enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. Records show he lost two fingers at Saltville, Virginia, October 2, 1864. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864, last on file, shows him "Home on sick furlough." Michael M. MATTOX enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. Edward Payson MILLER enlisted in the Liberty Independent troop on on 1 Oct 1861. He later enlisted in Company B, 20th Battalion Georgia Cavalry. He was never in the 5th Georgia Cavalry. Robert MITCHELL enlisted in Company C, 1st Battalion, Reserve Cavalry, 12 Jan 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on January 20. 1863. He was captured at Bear Creek Station, Georgia, on December 16, 1864. Private Mitchell was exchanged at Point Look­out. Maryland. February 13, 1865. James D. McCONNELL enlisted on Liberty Independent Troop and was discharged (disability) because he had only one eye. Henry McGILLIS enlisted in the Liberty Independent troop on on 23 Dec 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He was captured near Smithfield, North Carolina, on April 17, 1865. Records show he was released at Newport News, Virginia, 6 Jun 1865. R. M. McINTOSH Swinton W. McINTOSHenlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop on 17 May 1862. Private McIntosh transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He surrendered at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865. Augustus Munro McIVER, son of Alexander McIVER and Elizabeth MUNRO, was born in Liberty County, Georgia on 11 Dec 1828, and died 29 Jan 1881 in Jacksonville, Florida. He enlisted on 1 Oct 1861, in Captain Winn’s Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia cavalry. Private McIver transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He surrendered at Hillsboro, North Carolina, 3 May 1865. He was a planter and educator. He taught school for several years in Camden County, Georgia, before becoming a planter in Liberty, County. He married Matilda Sturtevant on 14 Oct 1858, at Middleboro, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. After the Civil War he served as local agent of the freedmen’s Bureau for a short while, and later as principal of Walthourville Academy. Augustus Munro and his wife are buried at Old City Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida. [FAM REC – MIL REC - HOUSTON] James E. McFAIL enlisted in the 1st Company F, 25th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, on 16 Sep 1861. He transferred to Captain Walthour's Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, on 1 Oct 1862. He then transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1862. On 1 Nov 1863, he transferred to Company D, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. He was wounded at Noonday Church, Georgia, on 20 Jun 1864. James E. McFail died of wounds in an Atlanta, Georgia, hospital on 4 Jul 1864. D. McQUAIG entered service as a substitute for J. Augustus Quarterman was captured in Liberty County, Georgia, December 14, 1864. He was released at Point Lookout, Maryland, in June 1865. Joseph Henry QUARTERMAN enlisted In Captain Winn’s Company, on on 1 Oct 1861. He transferred to Company G, 5th Georgia Cavalry. The 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry captured Joe Quarterman 14 Dec 1864, at Walthourville, Liberty County, Georgia, with Lieutenant Willie Stevens’ Remount Detachment. He was released at Fort Delaware, Delaware, June 17. 1865. He walked home from Richmond, Virginia, after release. Robert Keith QUARTERMAN William J. QUARTERMAN enlisted in the Liberty Independent troop, on 17 May 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He reported to Colonel Clinch’ Cavalry, where he remained until ordered to Macon, Geor­gia. He was at his home in Limestone Springs, Alabama, wounded, at the end of the war. Josiah P. R. SYKES – He enlisted in the Liberty Independent Troop in 1862. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He was elected Ordinary of Tattnall County, Georgia, on January 29, 1864, and was discharged from service to take up those duties on February 13, 1864. Edward J. THOMAS enlisted in Captain Winn's Company, 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. He transferred to Company G, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863. He was appointed assistant quartermaster. His furlough was extended 60 days. He was unable to rejoin his command before it surrendered. He died in Tattnall County, Georgia, in 1920.
