The direct line is as follows: Josephine Gullatt I Claude Alexander Smith I Amaryllis Smith Deaton I Amber Dawn Deaton Haas I Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas In 1662 in Newport News, York County, VA, there lived a certain Charles Gillatt. He owned 100 acres of land between Newport News and Blunt Point (see "Cavaliers and Pioneers 1623-1800, Virginia Land Patents and Grants," by Nell Marion Nugent). This man is likely the earliest Gullatt in America. There were a number of early Gulletts, but it seems difficult to accept that "Gullatt" and "Gullett" are the same surname; however Eldon C. Smith, author of "New Dictionary of American Family Names," does tend to believe that they are, indeed, the same surname. There were several "Gullatts" in early Fairfax Co., VA. A Charles Gullatt was born ca 1777 in Virginia and 2nd married Ellen (Eleanor?) Sinclair on 11-17-1835 and was living in Loudoun Co., VA, in 1850. A Catherine Gullatt was born ca 1775 in Virginia and was living in Jackson Co., AL, in 1850. This is Catherine Mitchell who married John Gullatt, son of Peter Gullatt I. Living with her was a Peter Gullatt age 41, and Julliett Gullatt age 8. John and Catherine accompanied the other Gulllatts to Georgia but by 1814 had moved on to Jackson Co., AL. Evidently they did not move to the Wilkes-Lincoln County area but rather the Warren County area. Warren County is located directly south of the Wilkes-Lincoln County area. John was granted land via the Georgia Land Lottery in Warren County GA, on 10-26-1818 but the places of birth of his children indicate he was in Georgia before this date. It should be noted that these Alabama Gullatts prospered. Many Gullatt marriages are recorded in Jackson County, AL. A Catherine and William Gullatt left a LWT (dated 1865) in Jackson Co., but as of this date your author has not be able to secure a copy of that document. There would appear to have been no Gullatts who served in the American Revolution; but the LWT of John Gullatt (dated 1784 Fairfax Co., VA), who was likely the brother of Peter Gullatt I, is on record. This document is most difficult to interpret. John refers to his wife "Ann Geary" and his three children "James Geary, Alley Geary, and John Geary." Was "Geary" his wife's maiden name? Did all of his children bear as a middle name the surname "Geary"? Were these children John's step-children? It would seem that this John Gullatt was a relatively young man at the time of his death. He had only three children and his wife was pregnant at the time he prepared his LWT. Unfortunately, John made no mention of his brothers and sisters and his witnesses are not mentioned in any of the other Gullatt or Thrift LWTs. Nonetheless, he still would appear to be a brother of Peter Gullatt I. The following is the LWT of John Gullatt: In the name of God Amen. I, John Gullatt of the town of Alexandria, in the County of Fairfax, and the Commonwealth of Virginia, blacksmith, being of sound mind and judgment do declare this to be my last will and testament and do dispose of this my estate, real and personal together with my goods, chattels, book debts, and all other of my effects, in form and manner following. After my just debts and funeral expenses are paid, and John Geary the whole of what I now stand possessed of to be equally divided amongst them namely my real and personal estate, except my blacksmith tools which I give and bequeath unto my son James Geary and further, in case of issue after my death, whereas the said Ann Geary is now pregnant, I do give and bequeath unto the said child whether male or female an equal share with the rest and in case of the death of said Ann Geary or any of the above mentioned children their part to go back to the estate and be equally divided among the surviving ones. I do further nominate and appoint John Gunnell, planter of the county of Fairfax, to be my executor and the said Ann Geary to be my executrix and I also declare this to be my last will and testament utterly revoking all former wills which may have been made by me. Signed, sealed, and delivered in the presence of us and on the 2nd day of March in the year of our Lord 1784. his John X Gullatt mark Witnesses: James Lownes John Yost James Smith MEANING OF THE SURNAME "GULLATT": The name is clearly French in origin. The Gullatts, as well as the Huguleys, were likely French Huguenots. They seem to have migrated to the New World together but perhaps not on the same ship. The name Gullatt, Gullatte, Golat, and possibly Gullett refer to a descendant of Guillet, a diminutive form of Guillaume, a French form of William meaning resolution or helmet. (See "New Dictionary of American Family Names," by Elsdon C. Smith). The early Wilkes-Lincoln County Gullatts pronounced the name "Gou-lay," obviously a French pronunciation. Mrs. Frances Cullars Prather of present day Lincoln County, shared this information with LDD and ASD when they visited her in 1980. Many of the Chambers County, AL, Gullatts pronounced the name "Go-lat." GENERATION FIVE: JOSEPHINE GULLATT Josephine Gullatt was the maternal great, great grandmother of Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas. She was the third daughter and fifth of eight children of Alexander Gullatt and Nancy Walker. Josephine was born 12-16-1870 in Lee Co., AL, and married Henry Moses Smith on 12-14-1886 also in Lee Co., AL. She died at 4pm on 11-14-1948 and is buried in Chambers Co., AL. To see a copy of Josephine's marriage License see THE SMITH FAMILY. Josephine died of "Chronic Bronchiectasis, bronchial pneumonia, and senility. The attending physician at her death was Howard Weldon. The undertakers were Johnson and Blakely of Lanett, AL. Josephine was living in the home of her son Claude Alexander Smith, at the time of her death. The death certificate informant was R.L. Smith. To see a copy of Josephine's death certificate see THE SMITH FAMILY. CHILDREN OF JOSEPHINE GULLATT SMITH: I. Ollie Smith was born 5-16-1888, married Pearl Gray, and died 1-25-1943 in Lanett, AL. For many years "Ollie" was "a second hand boss" in the local cotton mill, the same cotton mill built with "Huguley money" and managed by Lafayette Lanier. Ollie and Pearl appear in the 1920 census of Chambers Co., AL. They are living in Lanett and both are working in the local cotton mill. CHILDREN OF OLLIE SMITH: A. Ollie Jr., who married Helen Prater and had Ollie III. Ollie Jr., was eventually convicted of murdering a cab driver in Lanett and was sent to prison. Upon release he spent most of his remaining years in the VA hospital in Tuscaloosa, AL. For a detailed account of his trial and conviction see THE SMITH FAMILY. B. Mary Frances who married twice but the names of her husbands are unknown. II. Lorenzo Smith was born 2-2-1890, married Mattie Groover, and died on 3-4-1970 in Lanett, AL. Mattie was born 9-11-1892 and died 12-16-1959 in Lanett, AL. "Uncle Rennie" was a lifelong employee of West Point Manufacturing Company and Lanett Bleachery and Dye Works. He was, in fact, a member of the "fifty year club." Lorenzo, Mattie, and family appear in the 1920 census of Chambers Co., AL. They are living in Lanett and both are working for the local cotton mill. Living with them at the time was Carlton Smith ("Uncle Buster") and a 29 year old boarder named Ben Kimlow. CHILDREN OF LORENZO SMITH: A. Harold Smith who married Mattie Jack "Jackie" Cook. Harold was born in 1912 and died 7-12-1994 in Lanett. Harold appears in the 1920 census of Chambers Co. James "Bud" Smith was born ca 1914 and married Lillie Pearl Oliver. Children of James "Bud" Smith: 1. Suzanne. 2. Linda. 3. James. C. Reuben "Rube" Smith who married "Elsie." III. Mattie Bell Smith was born 9-11-1892 in Spring Villa, Lee Co., AL, and married Alvin Brewer Spear. Mattie Bell died ca 1980 in Lanett, AL. Mattie Bell and Brewer appear in the 1920 census of Chambers Co. Brewer is working in the cotton mill and Mattie Bell is a housewife. CHILDREN OF MATTIE BELL SMITH SPEAR: A. Lucille Spear who died as a teenager. B. Winona Spear who 1st married Herman Gunn, 2nd married "Red" Canty, and who was married a third time by 1980. Winona divorced Herman Gunn after W.W.II. She had born him one daughter, Patricia Gunn. Patricia became close playmate of ASD and the two, along with "Becky" Smith, participated in the infamous "drilling holes in the bathroom door" incident. C. Bruce "Gump" Spear. "Gump" (in excess of 350 lbs) was likely the largest person in Chambers Co. He loved to sing and once sang on the radio in Opelika, AL. This was in the late 1930's. He sang "I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire," and he insisted that all family members "tune-in" and hear him sing. D. Lamar "Turp" Spear who married Geraldine Gibson. E. Bobby Spear who was killed in the late 1940's in a private airplane crash in "the valley." He had been taking flying lessons. IV. Carlton Alfonso "Buster" Smith was born 10-15-1894 in Lee Co., AL, and married Jeanna Myrick on 9-18-1922. "Buster" died on 10-2-1978 in Danville, VA. Jeanna was born in 1900. Jeanna was never acceptable to Josephine Gullatt Smith because of having a child out of wedlock. Apparently, Jeanna never set foot in Josephine's home. Carlton spent most of his life in North Carolina and Danville, VA. He did return to Lanett for his mother's funeral. CHILDREN OF CARLTON ALFONSO "BUSTER" SMITH: A. Mary Jo. B. Helen. C. Carlton. V. GENERATION SIX: ALEXANDER GULLATT Alexander Gullatt (AG), the maternal great, great, great grandfather of Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas, was the oldest son and first of eleven children of George Gullatt (who pronounced his name "Go-lat") and Jane Glaze, was born 10-10-1833 (according to his pension application) in Harris Co., GA, married the widow Nancy Walker Oliver on 12-5-1860, and died 4-2-1912 in Chambers Co., AL. (Nancy had married Francis M. Oliver on 11-6-1851). Their marriage was performed by William G. Clayton, Judge of the Probate Court for Chambers Co. The marriage was witnessed by J.W. Williams. Nancy, the daughter of Sackfield M. Walker and Sarah Huguley, was born ca 1837 in Troup Co., GA, and died 10-13-1921. Alexander and family appear in the 1870 census of Chambers Co., AL. They are living in HH 181. In HH 183 is Sarah Walker. At the time Alexander owned no real estate. Alexander and family also appear in the 1900 census of Chambers Co. They are living in Lanett in HH 49. He is recorded as being a "wood chopper." Alexander was a farmer and sometimes "overseer" on various relatives' farms (not plantations). Nancy Walker Oliver had two children at the time she married Alexander. They were (1) Jane Broughton Oliver, born 12-21-1855 in Troup Co., GA, and died 7-10-1914 in Lanett, AL. She married William P. Ennis 12-21-1876 in Chambers Co., AL. And (2) William Watt Oliver born 10-11-1856 and died 10-5-1891. Jane is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Lanett, AL, and "Watt" is buried in the Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Lee County, AL. AG served in the Civil War for the CSA, 24th Alabama Regiment, Co. "A," (Hood's Army) as a private. He enlisted 8-1862 and was discharged 5-5-1865. According to CAS, AG spent most of his military service on "sick call" in order to avoid the fighting. Legend has him putting red pepper in his eyes to keep them inflamed, thus earning him a constant trip to the infirmary. There is, however, no indication of this in his military record. He applied for a military pension 5-16-1899. His application reads as follows (this was a printed form which required the applicant to fill in the blanks). THE STATE OF ALABAMA, Chambers County: To the Honorable Board of Pension Examiners for said County: your petitioner, A. Gullatt, respectfully represents to your Honorable Board that he is a resident of Chambers County, in the state of Alabama, and that he resided in said State on the first day of January in the year 1899. That he enlisted in the service of the State, or Confederate States as a private in Company "A" in the 24th Regiment on _______ of August 1862 at Camp Watts in the State of Alabama, and that he was honorably discharged from such service on the 5th day of May 1865, that he did not desert the service of the Confederate States, or of the State of Alabama; that he was wounded in the battle of ______(not wounded) in the state of ________; that he is now unable to make a living by Manuel labor on account of old age and afflictions; that he is at the time of this application 66 years of age, and that his post office is West Point, Ga., Alabama; that he does not own property either in his own name; nor that of his wife, to the value of ($400) four hundred dollars; that his annual income does not exceed ($400) four hundred dollars, and that he has no children upon whom he can depend for support. Your petitioner files herewith a complete schedule of all the property owned by himself and his wife. In consideration of the foregoing facts, your petitioner asks that his name be placed upon the pension rolls, in the class that your honorable Board may adjudge him to belong, that he may participate in the division of the fund provided for the relief of Confederate and Alabama soldiers and their widows by the act of the General Assembly approved February 10-1899. A. Gullatt, applicant At the time of his application, AG owned no real estate and listed his personal property as one clock (estimated value $3.00) and some household furniture (estimated value $75.00). It is wondered how much of this sort of southern poverty was due to the legal thievery of the "carpetbaggers?" It seems curious that this period of southern history was called "The Reconstruction Period." What a marvelous example of bureaucratic jargon, truly a euphemism to beat all euphemisms!!! AG's application was made before G.M. Croft, Justice of the Peace and witnessed by G.M. Brooks and J.W. Burdette. He was granted a pension on 6-8-1899. In 1850 AG was living with his parents in Harris Co., GA. In 1860 he was working as an "overseer" for Sarah Walker, his future mother-in-law, in Chambers Co., AL. Nancy was already back home with her two younger children having been widowed by Francis Oliver. The Huguleys were living next door. In 1900, AG, now married to Nancy, was living on Sears St., Lanett, Chambers County, AL. CHILDREN OF ALEXANDER GULLATT: I. George Gullatt was born 8-9-1862. He first married Sallie Cone on 6-25-1884. Sallie was born 2-16-1861 and died 5-8-1904. She is buried in the Union Grove Cemetery. He second married Lula Jones who was born 9-4-1866 and died 9-23-1942. She is also buried in the Union Grove Cemetery. George died 3-7-1943 and is buried in the Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Lee Co., AL. George was a farmer, a preacher, and a "real country gentleman." CHILDREN OF GEORGE GULLATT: A. Theodore S. Gullatt who was born 4-28-1885, died 5-8-1887, and is buried in the Union Grove Cemetery. B. George A. "Gus" Gullatt was born 10-23-1887 and died 3-9-1967. He married Louise Moon in Columbus, GA. C. Mara Lavada Gullatt was born 8-4-1890 and died 4-8-1966. D. William Alexander "Bill" Gullatt was born 7-30-1893 and died 3-24-1972. II. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Gullatt was born 8-1868 in AL. "Lizzie" was apparently retarded. She never married nor left home. III. Josephine Gullatt was the great, great grandmother of Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas (see above). IV. John Eley Gullatt was born 3-1873 in AL. The identity of his first wife is unknown. In 1900 John and his son Ciseroe, "Cebe," were living with Alexander and Nancy. One wonders if his first wife did not die in child birth. "Cebe" was born 8-1897 in AL, and died in a drowning accident in the Chattahoochee river. John second married Estelle Nora Knight on 1-23-1901. John and Nora appear in the 1920 census of Chambers Co. She remained single. She died 9-4-1966 and is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett, AL. F. Thelma was born in 1910 and married James Coker. G. Gladys who married Marvin Hammock. V. Edward Lee Gullatt was born 3-1875 in Lee Co., AL, and died 10-23-1955 in La Grange, Troup Co., GA. He first married Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Smith. "Molly was born 2-9-1879 and died 1-13-1905. They had one son, Adolphus Lee who was born 10-4-1901 and married Dessa Lee 10-23-1925 in Lee County, AL. Edward and Mary appear in the 1900 census of Chambers Co. They are living in Lanett. Edward is working for the cotton mill as a "weaver" and Mary is a housewife. As of 1900, they had no children. VI. Mattie Gullatt who married A.L. Whitman and died as a young woman. She left two children who were reared by George W. Gullatt, her older brother. (AG also cared for two stepchildren, Jane Broughton Oliver, who married William P. Ennis, and Peter Oliver). Jane & "Will" appear in the 1900 census of Chambers Co., AL. They are living in HH 57 in Lanett. "Will" is identified as a "wagoner." Alexander Gullatt is in HH 49. GENERATION SEVEN: GEORGE WASHINGTON GULLATT George Washington Gullatt (GWG), the grandfather of Josephine Gullatt, was the son of Peter Gullatt III and Nancy Huguley. He was born 8-14-1807 in Georgia and married Jane Glaze on 1-11-1834 in Harris County, GA. He died 8-7-1895. George and Jane's marriage is recorded in the Harris County marriage book 1828-1860. They were married by Jesse Berry, Justice of the Peace. There is some indication that Jane was pregnant with her eldest son, Alexander, prior to the marriage; however this might simply be a confusion of dates. On the other hand, such a circumstance would explain why George was in such disfavor with his father-in-law, William Glaze (see LWT of William Glaze). Jane was born ca 1815 in GA, and died after 2-14-1887. George and Jane are both buried in Crawford Cemetery, Russell Co., AL. This family appears in the 1850 census of Harris Co., GA, as "George Golatt." CHILDREN OF GEORGE WASHINGTON GULLATT: I. Alexander Gullatt who is in the direct bloodline of Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas. See above. II. Peter Gullatt V., was born 6-6-1835 in Harris Co., GA, and married Elmira "Minna" Porter on 12-14-1865 in Russell Co., AL. Elmira was born 8-1846 and died in 1922. In 1900, Peter and "Minna" were living in Phenix City, AL. In 1880 they were living in Russell Co., AL. Peter and "Minna" are buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Phenix City, AL. In 1881, Peter and G.W. Gullatt borrowed $150 from W.L. Tillman for the purpose of planting crops---corn, fodder, peas, potatoes, and cotton seed. Evidently the two were going to plant said crops on a plantation owned by Tom Ingram (100 acres). G.W. Gullatt also borrowed money to plant on land (40 acres) known as the Boykin Jones place. These farms were located in Russell Co., AL. CHILDREN OF PETER GULLATT V: A. Frank born ca 1868. He never married. B. Mattie born 12-9-1869 and died 11-21-1945. She first married Harry E. "CLAUD BERTRUM GULLATT SR---Hard work in youthful days; determination upon an education even under difficulties; enterprise and energy in private business, and unselfish readiness to serve in public affairs---these are the elements of the career of which has made Claude Bertrum Gullatt Sr., one of the most successful, most respected, and most popular citizens of Phenix City and Russell Co. Mr. Gullatt's father, the late Robert Benjamin Gullatt, was a farmer and married Cynthia Mary Coleman, by whom he was the father of ten children. Four of these died in infancy; those still living are Claud Bertrum Gullatt, Alfred Livingston, and Ernest Sherrad. Kay, Eugene, Augustus, and William Powell lived to maturity but are now deceased, Kay having died in 1945. During his youth Robert Benjamin Gullatt was a soldier of the Confederate States of America, serving through the entire four years of the War from 1861-1865. Claud Bertrum Gullatt Sr., was born 7-5-1881 near Phenix City, Russell Co. He attended rural schools in Alabama but completed his formal education at the high school in Butler, Ga, from which he graduated at the age of sixteen. During the summers he worked on a farm throughout his school years. After leaving high school he went to work in a cotton mill in Columbus, Ga., where he continued to be employed until he reached the age of twenty-one. At this age he entered the grocery business in his own right, at Phenix City, and prospered in that occupation until the year 1912 when he set up in the furniture business, still in Phenix City. Mr. Gullatt continued in the furniture business until 1935 when he sold his mercantile interest in order to give his entire time to the real estate business which he meanwhile had developed. Since 1935 his private business activities have been primarily in the character of a Realtor. He is also, however, a vice president and director of the Russell County Federal Loan Company, and he also manages his own extensive farm properties. Never to busy Claud Bertram Gullatt Sr., served five terms as mayor of Phenix City, Ala, and in 1926 was elected to the Legislature of the State of Alabama from Lee Co., serving until 1930. In 1932, Mr.Gullatt sponsored the bill which proposed to change the boundary between Lee and Russell Counties in such a way as to include Phenix City in Russell County which its economic and social interests were more closely identified than with Lee County. This bill was enacted by the Legislature and Phenix City became the county seat of Russell Co. In 1942 Mr. Gullatt was again elected to the Alabama State Legislature this time from Russell Co., and served one term in that body. Mr. Gullatt has long been identified with the fraternal works of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Improved Order of Red Men, in the latter of which he held the office of Great Sachem form 1924-1926. He is also an active member of the Lions Club of Phenix City. On March 4-1903, Claud Bertram Gullatt Sr., was married to Maggie Rutledge of Chambers Co., Ala. Nancy Huguley Gullatt's LWT is dated 1850 in Wilkes Co., GA, and reads as follows: In the name of God Amen: I Nancy Gullatt of the county of Wilkes and the State of Georgia being of sound and disposing mind and memory but afflicted in body and considering the certainty of death and now knowing how soon it may come, concluded to make this my last will and testament. Note that Amanda Gullatt had a double wedding with Alexander Gullatt. XI. Alexander Gullatt was born in 1819 in Lincoln Co., GA, and was living with Absolum Gullatt in Troup Go., GA, in 1850. GENERATION NINE: PETER GULLATT I Peter Gullatt I, who is in the direct bloodline of Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas, was born ca 1755 (likely in Fairfax Co., VA) and married Rachel Thrift. He died as a young man before 1-13-1785. Rachel was the daughter of Charles Thrift Sr., and Rebecca Hamilton. Very little is known of Peter Gullatt I except that he died as a young man. He left no LWT but his small estate was inventoried on 1-13-1785. The following is the record of that inventory: April Court 1784: In obedience to an order of the worshipful court of FairfaxCo., we the subscribers being first duly sworn have valued and appraised all the estate of Peter Gullatt deceased that hath been presented to our view viz., this 13th day of January 1785. George Smith Samuel Jenkins John Leister Peter Gullatt's father-in-law, Charles Thrift, left a LWT in Fairfax Co., VA, dated 2-15-1790. In this document he mentions two of his grandchildren, Peter and Rebecca Gullatt. The following is Charles Thrift's LWT: In the name of God Amen. Charles Thrift Signed, sealed, published, pronounced, and declared by the said Charles Thrift as his last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presence and in the presence of each other hath hereunto subscribed our names. Samuel Jenkins her Peggy X Jenkins mark Levi Lewis Rachel Thrift, Peter Gullatt's wife, was likely born about the same time as her husband (ca 1755) in Richmond or Fairfax Co., VA. She was widowed by 1790 and inherited from her father "one negro girl named Frances and all her increase." There are no records or documents to suggest what became of Rachel after she was widowed. She clearly remained with her father until his death in 1790. If she did remarry, it is likely she migrated to Georgia with the rest of the Gullatts. CHILDREN OF PETER GULLATT I: I. Peter Gullatt II who was born ca 1775 in Fairfax Co., VA. He married Nancy Huguley and migrated to Lincoln Co., GA. This is the direct bloodline of Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas. See above. II. Charles Gullatt was born ca 1776 in Fairfax Co., VA. III. Mary "Polly" Gullatt was born ca 1777 in Fairfax Co., VA, and married Matthew Leech. IV. Rebecca Gullatt was born ca 1779 in Fairfax Co., VA, and married John Huguley. V. John Gullatt was born ca 1781 in Fairfax Co., VA. He married Catherine Mitchell and died before 1830. He is the father of the "Jackson County Alabama Gullatts." Catherine was born ca 1775 in Virginia and migrated with her husband and children to the Wilkes-Lincoln Co., GA, area before 1801 and then to Jackson Co., AL, by 1814. John evidently died prior to 1830 because Catherine appears in the 1830 census of Jackson Co., AL, as a widow. Why John and Catherine took their family northwest to Jackson Co., AL, is not known. It does seem likely that the promise of inexpensive land was the motivating factor. That area of Alabama was mostly populated by native Americans at the time and the Federal Government was very much interested in moving these Indians out of the area; hence the land was offered for sale to "whites" for $1.25 per acre. Catherine settled on 81 & 1/4 acres. She appears in the 1830,40,50,60,and 1870 census records of Jackson Co. She died after 1870 evidently in Jackson Co., AL. In 1850, Catherine is living in HH 383 and has a personal estate worth $600. Her son William is living in HH 385. CHILDREN OF JOHN GULLATT: A. William who was born ca 1801 in GA, and first married "Lucinda"(b 1805 VA) and 2nd married Minerva Allen (b. 1816) on 5-20-1866 in Jackson Co., AL. On 9-28-1830, William claimed 80.25 acres of land in Jackson Co., AL. On 10-20-1831 he claimed 79.50 more acres. His property was adjacent to his mother's. He appears in the 1850 & 1870 census of Jackson Co. Only two of his children have been identified. In 1870 Jackson Co., William and Minerva are living in HH 43. He is identified as a farmer owning real estate valued at $1000 and personal property worth $570. In 1850 William is living two doors from his mother and has a personal estate worth $200. In 1860, William is living in HH 231, is farming, owns real estate worth $4000 and personal property worth $5,800. Note his loss of wealth between 1860 and 1870. Children of William Gullatt: 1. Mary E. born 1845 in AL. 2. Eaddy Hetty(?) born 1856 in AL. B. Peter who was born ca 1809 in GA. In 1850, he was living with his mother in Jackson Co. His wife had died and left him with one daughter, Julliet born 1842 in AL. Julliett married H. A. Coulson on 5-16-1863. C. James Madison (a twin) was born in 1814 in Alabama. He married Melissa P. Harper in 1850. He was a farmer and became the county tax accessor. On 10-10-1836 he claimed 40 acres in Jackson County and on 8-19-1852, he purchased 39 acres also in Jackson Co. James and family appear in the 1850,60, & 70 census of Jackson Co. It should be noted that his age is incorrectly recorded in 1870. He was 55 years old at the time but the census informant had his age recorded as "50." In 1870, He is living in HH 74, is identified as a farmer with real estate worth $1000 and personal property worth $1500. Living with the family in 1870 is a 14 year old african- american boy named Louis Tipton and identified as a "farm laborer." In 1860, James and family are living in HH 774, he is farming, owns property worth $7200 and personal property worth $1620. In 1850 he is living in HH 688, is farming, and has a personal estate of $3000. Between the years 1860 and 1870, his personal worth is diminished by more than $5000. Such was the cost of the Civil War. Children of James Madison Gullatt: 1. Julia was born in 1843 in AL. 2. Jerusha was born in 1849 in AL. 3. Jane was born in 1851 in AL. 4. George was born in 1816 in AL. He married "Rebecca" who was born in 1816 also in Alabama. George and family appear in the 1850 census of Jackson Co. He is living in HH 684, is farming, and owns real estate worth $880. Curiously, the census taker has him being born in Kentucky(?). Children of George Gullatt: 1. David was born in 1841 in AL. 2. John was born in 1844 in AL. 3. Mary was born in 1850 in AL. F. Thomas J. was born in 1820 in AL, and first married "Elizabeth"(b. 1826 AL), 2nd married Mrs. Sarah E. Browning Campbell in 1869, and 3rd "Rachel," and 4th married Martha Farr in 1885. Thomas and family appear in the 1850, 1860, and 1880 census of Jackson Co. In 1880, Thomas is recorded as married to "Rachel." In the 1850 Census of Jackson Co., Thomas is married to Elizabeth, is living in HH 696 and is identified as a "farmer." He owned no real estate. In 1860, he is living in HH 771, is farming, owns real estate valued at $900 and personal property valued at $700. In 1880, Thomas is living in HH 104 and is farming. Children of Thomas J. James is identified as a farm laborer with personal property worth $400. In 1880 James and family are living in HH 82 and James is farming. Children of James P. Gullatt: a. Katie was born ca 1868 in AL. b. Martha born in 1868 in AL. Martha seems to have died by 1880. Could this be Katie's twin? c. Amanda born 1870 in AL. Amanda seems to have died by 1880 d. Hannah born ca 1879 in AL. 2. Peter H. who was born in 1845 in Al. He married Pharabe L. Wilson on 10-24-1867. Pharabe was born in 1850 in AL. Interestingly enough, Peter's age is erroneously recorded as "40" in the 1880 census. Peter was killed by a falling tree 2-18-1891. Peter and family appear in the 1870 census of Jackson Co. They are living in HH 77. Peter is recorded as a farmer with a personal estate of $300. In 1880 He is living in HH 101 and is farming. Pharabe is "keeping house." In HH 404 is Thomas J. Gullatt. Living with him in HH 686 is his wife "Jane," a Sarah Gullatt, age 19, and an Abraham Gullatt, age 13. These two teenagers are to old to be Samuel's children. In 1850, Samuel was farming and owned property worth $1400. H. Nancy. I. Rachel. J. Rebecca. It should be noted that in the 1870 Census of Jackson County, living next to William Gullatt, there was living a certain "Burt" Gullatt and family. "Burt" and family are "black" and undoubtedly were recently freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. They undoubtedly had been "slaves" of one of the Gullatt brothers. By 1880 "Burt" has died. His widow and family do appear in the 1880 census of Jackson Co. The census taker did make a curious error in recording this family however. He (or she) recorded "Peggy" (Burt's widow) and her children and grandchildren but, curiously, listed Peggy's children as her grandchildren and her grandchildren as her children. VI. William P. Ennis b. 2-1842. EPILOGUE: The Gullatt family is an exceedingly interesting one. They were French and, like the Huguleys, were likely French Huguenots. The Huguleys and the Gullatts migrated to the New World together to the area of Fairfax Co., VA, and then to Wilkes and Lincoln Cos., Ga. The two families remained very close for a hundred years and intermarried many times. For some reason, one branch of the family (John & Catherine) migrated on to Jackson Co., AL, and eventually a second branch (Charles, John, & William) took advantage of the Louisiana Homestead Act of 1851 & 1859 and settled in Jackson/Lincoln Parish, La. These land records do confirm that the area now known as the Jackson and Lincoln parishes were at one time one parish. The Gullatts did not move from one parish to another. Rather, when the parishes were divided they simply found themselves in Lincoln Parish as opposed to Jackson Parish. As mentioned above, these two families remained very close for a hundred years and intermarried often. Likely, their nationality, their religion, and their language kept them together. The Gullatts seemed to have done quite well financially until after the Civil War. Several Gullatts were killed in the Civil War and their properties were ravaged by the "carpetbaggers" They seemed quite comfortable with slavery and thought of it as the "normal and natural way." It is interesting that Nancy Gullatt had a slave woman named "Matilda" that she wanted equally divided between her two daughters at her death!! It is also interesting to note the value of a slave as noted in the Inventory of the possessions of Peter Gullatt I. One slave was worth forty pounds and the other one hundred and twenty pounds. Do you suppose the less expensive slave was the father ( and thus older and less productive) of the younger and therefore less valuable as a slave? Finally, it should be noted that Burt Gullatt, upon being freed, took the name of his former masters and began farming next door to those folks who had formerly held him in captivity.
