First, it is 90 years old, and has a dead eagle being held up by two stalwart citizens of Long County. Today, it would be a crime to kill an eagle, but then, it was just being neighborly. In those days, this was "free range county" and cattle and other livestck roamed at large. Young calves, lambs, and pigs were "fair game" to the marauding eagles, so any one that bagged one had the cattle owners gratitude. "Caption " This 1913 Photo shows Judge Mel Price (Left) and David Parker Hughes (R) holding a Bald Eagle that had been killed.prsumably by one of them. Judge Price was the Judge of Superior Court in the Atlantic Judicial Circuit of Georgia for many years. David Parker Hughes was the first Liberty Countian killed in World War I. In the days of "free range" livestorck, eagles frequently attacked young calves, lambs and pigs, so the stockmen frequently shot eagles in defense of their stock. The photo was taken in front of the Ludowici Hotel in downtown Ludowici. The brick building to the left was Branch's Pharmacy. The new Long County Library occupies this site today.
