He married Mary Ann Guy in 1853. Mary Ann Guywas born on October 1, 1837 and died on October 8, 1874. Mary Ann birthed 14 children in the space of 15 years. Lazarus Dowling joined the 50th Georgia Infantry, Co. A. He spoke of how thick the snow was on the soldiers' blankets during a particular Winter of The Civil War. "I would've gladly crawled under Mama's kitchen stove back home, if I could've only been out of that mess." Lazarus was wounded on the second day of the fighting at Antietam. He was captured during the Virginia campaigns, though no specifics are available here. He was eventually discharged due to his wounds. He returned home, married Mary Harris and farmed on land near Ft. Mudge not far from the Okefenokee Swamp. Apparently Lazarus Dowling was a godly man, as he was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and taught Sacred Harp singing in the Lowndes County area. Lazarus Dowling died on February 17, 1919 and is interred at High Bluff Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Additional Comments: I am indebted to "A Dowling Family of the South" and to Mr. Tom Reynolds of Jacksonville for some of the foregoing information.
