Donald and his first cousin, H.R. Rivers enlisted in the Georgia Army National Guard on July 2, 1940. In 1941 the National Guard was absorbed by the U.S. Army. On July 26, 1944 Donald went ashore on one side of Guarm Island, and H.R. on the other side. After searching, Donald discovered that H.R. had been killed on the first or second day of battle. Donald participated in combat on 5 other islands, and received a battlefield commission to 2nd Lt. and was later promoted to 1st Lt. He served with the occupational forces in Japan and returned to the U.S. in November, 1945. Later Donald enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, was promoted to Major and retired after 20 years of service. He was married to Lucille Deem Cosby, and later was employed by the Texas State Employment Commission. He has three children: William, Donald Jr. and Robert.
