They grew up in Valdosta, Georgia, and later lived in Florida. June joined the United States Marine Corps in August 1943 and was attached to the U.S. Navy where he served aboard Navy ships. Marines on Navy ships served as a police and guard force. June was discharged in May 1946. He married Emi Lee Harnage on February 3, 1946. After his children, Melody and Ronald were born, June decided on a military career. He reenlisted in the Marines in August 1950. During this enlistment, June served in the Korean War and did three tours of duty in Vietnam. June Lee McDonald achieved the highest enlisted rank in the U.S. Marine Corps, and died of cancer while still in service on February 15, 1977. He is interred in Friendship Cemetery, Hahira, Georgia.
