He spent much of his boyhood in southern Georgia, as his father was a farmer, and raised livestock. The submitter, Henry McDonald's son William, remembers his father telling him about how cows and pigs ran loose in those days, and the local farmers trusted one another not to steal livestock that wasn't there's. One day, however, my granddad missed a particular pig, and went looking for it. He found it penned up in a neighbor's back yard. The neighbor made some excuse, but my grandfather's brand was on it, and he took that boar home with him. Thankfully, Henry Jr. has made a tape of his childhood exploits that will live on after him. Just prior to The Great Depression, Ruth Daisy (Cone) McDonald, Henry's mother, died of a heart condition. She was only 27. My father was only 2 years of age, and doesn't remember her. During the Depression the family moved to central Florida, and at the age of 16 Henry Jr. joined the United States Navy. The year was 1942, just after the start of WWII. He served as an engine man on the U.S.S. Nausett, a medium sized aircraft carrier, and also served on other ships before combat ceased in 1945. He was invited to remain in the Navy, but decided against it. Henry married Erma McDonald, the daughter of William Earnest Ring and Lilly (Chaney) Ring in 1948. They moved to Coral Gables, Florida where their first son, William (myself) was born the next year. Subsequently, Wayne, Brent and Linda were born. Henry McDonald owned his own exterminating company, ("McDonald Exterminators") for 30 years. This was located in Bartow, Florida. He gained a reputation for fairness, and business ethics and is still known throughout the county. During the 90's he sold his business to Bob Edwards, who chose to keep the original business name. Over the past twenty years Henry "dabbled" in oil painting, and ultimately established himself in nature settings. Many of his paintings were sold, and are owned by people in Florida and other states. Henry and Erma McDonald have retired and moved into a smaller home in Bartow, Florida. My father enjoys his back window view of his little share of a pond, the birds that congregate in his flower garden, and spends time watching Westerns on television, and reading books from the local library.
