Isaac descended from Governor Bradford and other notables of Mayflower fame through his mother. The Ring family is also distantly related to Franklin Delano Roosevelt through the president's maternal line. Though Isaac Ring was a "Union Man," he migrated to North Carolina, prior to "The War of Northern Aggression," for health reasons. This ultimately led to his being drafted into the Confederate Army, Co. D, 18th North Carolina Infantry Regiment in 1864. Isaac Ring was taken prisoner by Union Troops at The Battle of Spotsylvania, (Virginia) on 12 May 1864. He was transferred to Point Lookout, MD, and was subsequently sent to the infamous prison in Elmira, NY. (Can you imagine how popular this transplanted Yankee was, among the guards, wearing the Confederate uniform in a Northern prison? Reflect on that a moment!) Isaac Ring was released from Elmira Prison, NY on 19 May 1865, as hostilities were coming to a close. Isaac Ellis Ring was married to Susan Mahala Benton on 7 July 1859. While Isaac was "off to war," his wife was forced to take unusual measures to feed her children. A family legend has it that Susan trespassed on a neighbor's pasture, shot a cow and left a note in a nearby tree promising that she would pay for the bovine at the end of the war. Isaac Ring died after 1900 in Little River, North Carolina. His descendants and other relatives live in the Valdosta, Georgia area, and are scattered throughout this country and Canada. "For his character so exemplary, so patriotic, so God-fearing, we thrill to honor him here."
