MCDONALD LENGTHY ILLNESS PROVES FATAL TO WELL-KNOWN VALDOSTAN; SERVICES ARRANGED FOR SUNDAY AFTERNOON Mrs. Virginia Caroline (Dowling) McDonald, 75, died at her home in Valdosta yesterday afternoon after a lengthy period of ill health. She had not been well for about two years, and for six months her condition had been grave. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 5 PM at Cat Creek. Survivors are five sons, two daughters, 23 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. Her children are: Gus McDonald, Valdosta, Perry McDonald, Hahira, Roy McDonald, Orlando, Fla., Webster McDonald, Winter Haven, Fla., Chester McDonald, Valdosta, Mrs. C.M. Fields, Winter Haven, Fla., and Mrs. Herman Rivers, Valdosta. Two brothers, Henry Dowling, Atlanta and S.L. Dowling, Valdosta, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Black, Valdosta, also survive. Mrs. McDonald was a native of this section, having been born in the Pine Grove settlement. She had lived in this county all of her life. Her husband died some time ago. She was a devout member of the Primitive Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements are being directed by Carson McLane. The body will be carried to the residence, West Hill Avenue today and will remain there until time for the funeral tomorrow afternoon. Additional Comments: Virginia Caroline (Dowling) McDonald was married to John McDonald, son of William McDonald, grandson of Isham McDonald, the original Scottish immigrant ancestor of his particular lineage. Virginia (Dowling) McDonald was the sister of Henry Dowling, one of the final national commanders of The United Confederate Veterans and the last resident of the Confederate Soldiers Home in Atlanta.
